What are friend codes used for?

How do you find your friend code? How do you add friends on 3ds? Does this have to be done in Miiverse?

On the menu there is a orange smiley face called friend list, you can view your friend code and input others there

They are to play with people online, its like adding a friend on ps or xbox, but Nintendo has a code for each person that you have to input to add them
