That, my friends, is the question.

The 3Ds is the first console that I have ever saved my sheckles ahead of time so to be in a position to actually grab one at launch. I have already started my monthly 3DS slush fund, at this rate round about next year when they debut in the US I'll surely have enough to pounce day one. BUT, the problem is that Nintendo is notorious for releasing slightly better variants of their handhelds in short order, not to mention the inevitable Zelda/Mario/Special Propertyeditions thatI always say: "AW man! If I had the money I'd jump on that, it's so sweet!" (gold Zelda DS I'm looking at you.....and weeping...)

I have never been in on the launch of anything but boy doI want to play that Starfox 64 re-make in 3Din the first hour of the first day of release. But whatif 6 months later they come out with a *tremble* Smash Bros edition?

What's the smart move here?

I can't even begin to imagine having to wait even longer to get my hands on a 3DS. :P

I'm not sure if you can manage to wait but it's definitely launch for me.

Launch. A special Phoenix Wright 3DS would be a long shot but amazing to think, especially for the fans. Something like the DSi that was released in Japan.

Despite how good the list of titles are, the technology, and hardware... I'll probably end up waiting for a bundle or special edition (like the NES colored GBA SP)

Launch. I always go launch, and I've never regretted it. Launch Wii, DS, Cube, Advance,64. Dunno about my NES or SNES andPocket or Colour, my brothers got those, I was too little to buy things for myself :P

But all of my launch products are still working today in great condition, despite me using all of them regularly. And I don't really care for the re-releases, the original always does the trick of playing the games I wanna play.

I'm waiting for the 3DS Lite. A 3.5 inch screen in my opinion is somewhat on the small side...

I'm going to get one at launch if I can, unlike the people who run out and buy every DS model. I'm not going to buy a second 3DS, just because they rounded out the corners a bit, the screen is 1/10 brighter and Pikachu is on the cover.

Launch, preferably in Black, but if there's a special edition for OOT 3D that is a Gold 3DS, with a triforce between the two cameras, i'd buy it

I like my DS, found myself playing it less since getting an Ipod Touch, my PS3, moving in with my gf... I really need to make more time for this again... oh i'm sorry, what was the question?! If there's a game I really want then launch otherwise :O If I don't have time to play it that often, might as well have people envy my special edition =x

It sure would be nice to sport one launch day.

I have a long memory though.

I can still remember standing in Toys R Us and checking out the new Gameboy Color and thinking it was the sweetest bit of hardware known to man, saved my money, got one, then like 6 months later they came out with the SP which WAS the sweetest piece of hardware known to man, at the time. Got burned on that one. Then you look at the DS fat. How long was that out before the far superior DS Lite's hit? If you had a fat, wouldn't you be mad when you saw the Lite, like that's what it should have been all along? Granted I waited a LONG time to upgrade to my DSi (Christmas '09) and I love it, but less than a year later, here comes the 3ds. If I bought a launch model that would be it, I wouldn't buy a special edition just to have it, but the special editions are always cool. What if after they hit and sell a jillion Nintendo goes to a crisper screen, or upgrades a component within the first year? I appreciate the input from everyone, most seem as excited as me to get it asap, but I'm leaning toward waiting a little, once I have the cashI can always pounce at any time I feel like, right?

I think I'll just wait for a special edition or something. Getting one at launch is going to be ridiculously hard. The 3DS has a ton of hype for it, so I'll just hold off a bit instead of camping out several hours/days in advance.

It depends how much it costs. If its $200 or less I may get it at launch, but if its more I may have to wait.

Uh, the GBC was released in 1998, and the GBA SP was released in 2003, so nevermind the fact that it gave GBC a 5 year span before GBA SP, or a three year span before the GBA, what were you doing buying a GBC in 2002/2003 after the GBA had released?

also its ironic you're advocating waiting, when waiting is what got you into the situation you described. If you buy a 3DS or any Nintendo handheld at launch it maximizes the time you have before the redesign arrives, and other than bigger screens, i can't see anyway to redesign the 3DS.

Usually you'll have 1-2 years before the redesign comes, and we had a 3 year gap before the DSi came out.

If the launch 3DS isn't enough to satisfy a person, I don't know what is. There really isn't a whole lot they can change, they can't make it any lighter since the 3DS is as light as a DSi roughly, the screen Res will always be the same the whole gen, and it already has three cameras, maybe two inside cameras for 3d video chat? maybe but thats very minor

Geez Darth I just asked for opinions could you be any more of a bulldog? "Ladies and gentlemen of the court, what more could a person ask at launch?" I meant Gameboy Advance, not color, okay? Tone it back a little man I don't even know you, just trying to dialogue a little with fellow DS fans.

I'm going to try to get it at launch, but I can't help but feel like it'll be the Wii all over again and I won't get my hands on one for a few months after release.

I like the way you think. With that said, I share very similar thoughts. I personally dislike having repetitive items and the idea of a new, improved, or upgraded version of the 3DS coming out within a year or two of the release of the 3DS makes me a bit nervous to plunk down the cash for a launch version of the console. Obviously, if an improved and/or upgraded and/or patched/fixed version of something I own comes out, it would be in my better interests to invest in it which will mean owning two versions of the same thing. It isn't cheap and what if? I own a launch release DS Lite and my console was one of the ones that came with the faulty hinges (a manufacturing issue that Nintendo acknowledged and offered to fix for free) that cracked open even after light and gentle use. Later versions of the DS Lite had less of that problem and when I thought I lost my launch DS Lite, I replaced it with a newer version which didn't possess the same hinge problem. Granted, cracking hinges might not be such a major issue considering Nintendo offered to fix those for free, but it is an example of something that wasn't caught/fixed/taken care of in the initial DS Lite releases and was taken care of in later releases. My general rule of thumb for expensive electronics is to wait and see. It's awesome to own a launch copy, but... First releases oftentimes tend to be the buggiest and most problematic as they haven't been beta tested by the general public yet and problems that don't show up in the labs or in their closed beta testing groups tend to crop up during the release.

Thanks for the input, and you are right, initial releases of hardware always do end up being the most problematic. Once the nintendo machine goes into full overdrive to manufacture the kajillion 3ds's they're going to need to launch there's bound to be issues. I think you may have provided me with that last bit that helps me make my mind up once and for all to wait and see. As I said, once I have the funds I can pounce at will, and as I said I know that special edition is coming, sooner or later.
