2011 is certainly the year of the 3DS. But could 2012 also be the year of the Wii 2?

Right now all eyes are on Nintendo's revolutionary 3DS handheld, ready to set the gaming scene on fire in just little over a month. Barring a possible Christmas clash with Sony's recently revealed NGP handheld, 2011 looks to be the undisputed year of the 3DS.

But what will Nintendo do for the following year? There is still the matter of their Wii console, which continues to drop in sales. While everyone is busy admiring the slick visuals and glasses-free 3D technology of Nintendo's handheld, their motion-controlled console is struggling to keep the people's interests; it also doesn't help that it uses technology that's been obsolete for almost a decade now.

With the push Nintendo has made to embrace the modern era with their handheld, it only stands to reason that they would give their next console the same kind of attention, yes? That's what Colin Sebastian, an analyst for Lazard Capital Markets believes. In fact, he is confident that Nintendo may be using the 3DS hardware to "pave the way" for their successor to the Wii as early as 2012.

While Sebastion was eager to list both Nintendo and Google as the dominant winners for 2011′s gaming scene (the latter which continues to expand its Android technology, and may come up with their own 3D variant to combat the 3DS), he also notes that the strong sales launch of the 3DS also guarantees the merciful execution of its predecessor, the DS. Since Nintendo has never been one to have just one piece of hardware generating sales in the gaming market, the timing does seem perfect to start talking about their next (and hopefully high-def) console.

Or is it? Recently, Michael Pachter claimed that Nintendo has already "blown it" by waiting too long to announce their Wii successor. While the gaming analyst hasn't always been spot-on with his predictions, it is starting to feel like the Wii has outstayed its welcome, especially with the newest handhelds completely trouncing its tired technology. Will Nintendo be able to make their next console move before Sony and/or Microsoft beat them to the punch?

One thing Nintendo's good at is being first. So in 1012 they should just announce their next-gen console (which, by all means, can be a wii 2) with specs and features that will blow Xbox 360 and PS3 out of the water. It's what they did with 3DS, what they did with GC. Of course, Microsoft and Sony will announce their own next-gens that will crush the Wii-quel along with the rest of the pack of past consoles.

The last paragraph is lol worthy. What he says, the opposite will happen. So, this is great. When Nintendo annouces the Wii 2, everyone is going to want it.

I think the general concensus is that the Wii's sucessor will come out next year. I can't really see it not happening, it feels like the Wii just had its prime year last and and that now its winding down. Most likely in 2012 very few good Wii games will come out and Nintendo fans will have to rely on the 3DS until the new Wii is out just like we had to do with the DS in the Gamecube's final sad year.

Next gen starts when Sony says so.

No, really. It does this time. Both Microsoft and Nintendo have been aiming their guns at Sony this generation. They'll release their new consoles around the same time as Sony.

I really highly doubt that, Nintendo holds all the cards, to try and toe the line without making this SW worth, the other two are trying to squeeze out any profits they can out of this gen because of the losses they took at the beginning. Nintendo holds all the marketshare and all the cards, they can start next gen and everyone else would have no choice but to rush into it as well

lol @ Pachter. The man is a hack. It seems almost everything he predicts ends up being wrong and the exact opposite occurs. I think we will either see a small mention of Wii 2 at E3 or they will go with a full unveiling. I hope to know at least something come E3.

Late 2009 I was speculating we'd see a wii successor in E3 2010, however my mind changed early 2010 considering the Wii is the most successful console they've ever had as the primary reason. For that, I then called that we'd get many Wii software games, and you know the rest. I'm still trying to decide if it will happen this year...most of the franchises are released, Zelda coming soon, Star Fox not happening, Kid Icarus coming to 3DS and not Wii, F-Zero wouldn't do much, Excitebike on wiiware There really isn't a whole lot of major software titles other than Pikmin 3 that I can see happening that would want Nintendo to push the Wii software another year, as opposed to focusing efforts for their next Nintendo console. I'll be weighing my options.

A late 2012 launch makes the most sense. I can't see Nintendo supporting the Wii any longer than that since its momentum is only going to decline from here on out, especially in Japan which they consider a top priority. Only reasons they aren't gonna go ahead with a new system this year is because they'll be too busy with the 3DS and they can still get some decent mileage out of the Wii if they play their cards right.

Right now, I'm actually leaning towards a 2012 announcement, and a 2013 release (probably during the holiday season). There are still a few things that they could do with the Wii IMO. Releasing F-Zero, Star Fox, and maybe a couple more retro revivals for example. I think they could also use the end of the gen to bring over a few of the games that didn't make it outside of Japan by that point (possibly even publishing some of the more wanted 3rd party games). Plus maybe a new IP to send things off.

The Wii 2 will likely come around holiday season 2012, I don't expect a full unveiling at this E3, but they're certainly going to talk about it.

E3 2012 seems to make sense, even though I'm hoping for this year - but they'll probably keep pushing the 3DS.

Kirby made by HAL, a handful of games they could localize if they want to and probably a few last surprises left for E3. At the same conference Iwata announced Kirby and Pandoras Tower, he said they'd have more Wii announcements for the rest of the year.

Oh, and Dragon Quest 10 of course... (release 2015? :()

To my knowledge kirby hasn't been confirmed to be outside Japan, neither with Pandoras Tower I would get the Kirby game hands down.

Kirby will make its way to the rest of the world eventually, there's no doubting that. Pandora's Tower will probably be locked in limbo for a while like Last Story or Xenoblade.

Sounds about right. The DS came out in 2005 and the Wii followed in 2006. The 3DS is coming out in 2011 so the next generation console would likely come next year.

I still think theirs alot of great software they can still release on the wii for the year and the first half of next year , but I expect something to come out in 2012. I don't think they'd release a new console along side a handheld in the same year.

The DS actually came out in 2004, at least for Japan and America, not sure about Europe. Still your logic is sound.

Either late (holiday)2012 or summer 2013

Scince Nintendo reigns dominant right now, they can chosse wether to release one as a response to other companies or release the first themselves.

i hope Nintendo investsr the money it has into developing a new technology for the system, whil at the same time not passing up on hardware, though Nintendo has to keep pushing on developing good games without depending on the hardware that the other systems cling too.

And Nintendo could regainthe gamer fanbase it lost through the Wiiwhile keeping it's casual one by marketing the wii as a system for everyone, with commercials showing good games all the way up the spectrum from E-M (Not EC or A probaly)

Of course I don't care who plays the system though, i just care if It's good enough for me to get it.

In the end, the experience is all that matters.:D

I'm more concerned with what the console will be capable of, not when it will be released.

I'm sure they'll go the single friend code route like with the 3ds (which they better). Obviously they're going to update the internals.

I'm just curious to see if they're going to take another gamble again and try to introduce something else that's new, or just update like we've normally seen in the past console releases(that's basically all the 3DS is, an upgrade).

? looking at it now Nintendo will be catching up to it competitors in terms of hardware power...whether they will make Wii successor more powerful than the 2 competitors remain to be seen, OR they could just create it with same hardware power as its competitors (which would be lame & cheap) - from what they did with Wii, its a possibility. Tho I hope not.
