Do you think nintendo might make a network like psn or xbox live instead of friend codes for 3ds? I personally think friend codes aren't that great.

Friend codes are safe for the young-ones and that is the target audience. Odds are there will be no network that actually allows you to connect with other people as you should never talk to strangers.

I expect a transition period for Nintendo using the 3DS. Why would I want to talk to a random stranger? My guess is one friend code istead of a user name

i just hope that they make pictochat online. I dont understand it. If they dont want children to talk to random strangers, couldnt they put a restriction on it like they did with the internet browser?

There is parental controls for the 360, but it is hardly ever used. I see the following possibilities that nintendo would actually do: A system friend code Or a system like psn and XBL, but when they do it run an ad campaign about the parental features touting them. or stick with normal friend codes.

Well they haven't talked much about it

That means either they are working out the details to something hopefully unique

Or they are hiding it because they don't plan to change anything

I hope it is changed to be more stream lined

They said the 3DS was more being made not for kids, but for anyone over the age of development (so their eyes would not be hindered by the 3D). I do believe that the system will utilize a friend code so instead of multiple codes per game, you only need one code. However, I am rather hoping that they do either a Steam or PSN approach and just use their club nintendo service as our account. (And no, I do not support xbox live at all)

I don't believe I have the phrase wrong. And I don't get any joke, if one is being made.

So, if something is going straight over my head, plz explain.

I think the "safe" argument is a load of crap. Nintendo just didn't want to admit that their pathetic attempt at an online system was worse than sub-par. Seems like they may have made a major overhaul to the WFC based on some dev comments.

To be fair, I think Nintendo simply invented Nintendo WFC in 2004/2005 on paper and thought it would be better than it is, because online wasn't as good then as it is today on consoles

I mean, they rolled out WFC in 2005 for DS, and i'm sure that means they were planning it in 2004 during the final days of Cube. They only had the consoles online programs to run off during that time. So they figured to roll out the same online system for Wii as DS.

Problem is in fall 2005 and fall 2006 their home console competitors showed how much better and stream lined multiplayer, and online communications with friends can truly be, and Nintendo was stuck using the FC system they had invented until the Wii and DS were done. Its not like they can just send a huge update out to the DS (which had no internal storage) or the Wii (which had little storage for such large system altering updates)

They basically stuck to their guns and it turns out their guns were not very future proof.

The 3DS supports all software running off an SD card, and the system is update ready. So hopefully any errors in Nintendo's online judgement can be fixed.

As long as you get one code/gamertag than I will be happy.

Making it similar to steam would only add to the improvement.

Says who? You have to talk to strangers for them to become your friends. A choice that should be made by me and for my children (if I had any). I don't need Nintendo telling me who I talk to.
