So, it just occurred to me when previous Nintendo console launched in the past, like the N64 and Wii, that demand was so high because supply couldn't keep up with demand. And I heard how Michael Pachter thinks this could be $250 and usually I disregard what he says but now I'm thinking this could be a (rare) hit as far as his predictions go; get this... So as when any new system comes out there's expected to be a certain number of people that will sleep outside the store overnight to pay top dollar for whatever they're getting. If Nintendo plans it right they can ship just under enough of the demand to leave people without 3DSs, and leave periods where they have to have more shipped to retailers. That $250 3DS is going to now look cheap because now people will pay $500 on Ebay for them. It'll create a buzz about how "OMG, it's a hot item, I'm going to get me one the first chance I get". As months after launch go by people will continue to pick these up at the pace Nintendo sets by their production and shipping strategy, keeping the consumer interest in it at the pace they set as long as supply is less than demand. Anyhow, anybody think this could be a strategy of how this could go down? Or do you think Nintendo will simply produce as many 3DSs as they can in hopes of high demand and try to keep up with pace as quickly as possible? Your thoughts?

I say Nintendo will be selling it for 200. And like the Wii, I am preordering it to avoid any complications from any shortages.

All new console launches since the N64 launched has face shortages in the United States. Manufactuers usually can't produce enough to meet the demand of early adopters it's usually with the non-tech savvy/casual gamer group that they have a hard time getting. Usually a few months after the holiday season, you will be able to find the console unless its as popular as the Wii was.

Heck, even console revisions now are having shortages! The only ones that haven't are the PSP revisions and the the DSi XL. The PS3 Slim and Xbox 360 S both had shortages soon after launch.

I've mentioned on several occasions that this is the problem with launching during the holiday season. I'd say if they launch before Christmas, only a tiny percentage of those of us here on this board will get it unless we pay scalper prices.

i would strongly avise anyone who wants a 3DS to preorder as soon as they can. While the DS did not have a shortage the 3DS could very well have , considering how popular the DS has now become and all the hype and new features of the 3DS. I think if you do not preorder one then you will most likely be out of luck when it comes out unless you are willing to get up very early and wait in long lines.

I made the mistake of Not Preordering the Xbox 360 (not sure why i didnt) but luckly i was able to get one the week after it came out. Given the long term shortage of the Wii i would keep checking news sites every day on infomation about preorders.

You could try to preorder at yoru local gamestop/ebgames but i personally have had preorder mess ups in the past and honestly woudnt trust them for something like the 3DS. I plan to hopefully preorder it with Amazon as soon as you can as they most liikely will have release date delivery for six bucks (they do with the Kinect..which i am not getting i just put in my cart to see how much the release date option was...and then removed it). In my opinion that would be the best way to go!

of course gamespot and ebgames might soon have preorders too. but make sure to keep up with the news.

the one thing you DO NOT want to do is say "oh well i wont preorder they will have them in stock in stores when it comes out) If you really want one preordering is the way to go as soon as you can!

most likely they will be a shortage and if it comes out this holiday i would be suprised if it DIDNT become the hottest gift item and hard to find christmas gift of the year.

My suggestion is to look to the Sept. 29th info on pricing and release date info before you decide to preorder or wait. but id keep checking the news online every day just in case!

First come first served as they say.

Probably $5 just like most if not all games. You can put more down if you want though.

You people make me laugh (no offense)..... Gotta have it NOW!!!!! RIGHT NOW!!!! $500??? I don't care! GOTTA HAVE IT NOW!!! I won't have any problem getting one because I won't buy one until they are reasonably priced and have tons sitting on the shelves. I have never bought a console within the first year they were released. I don't see any point in doing so. In a year from the release date it will be cheaper, possibly have a newer updated version, and will have a bunch of games out for me to chose. I look at the people who dished out tons of money for the first 360 and then had it RROD on them and feel really sorry for them. I paid less for my newer version 360 and have not had RROD yet.

You have a point there, but has the first DS ever dropped in price after the launch? If so, then i too might wait until there is a price drop.

Oh not sure.. I just got into DS gaming recently. If it doesn't drop in price I'm sure I can always find a used one for a decent price.

That's because no one wanted one lol. But all seriousness, a hot item always has shortages, especially with the rise of the eBay gougers. A company really doesn't take into account what people are paying on places like ebay because its not representative of the mass market. There were people who bought the PS3 for $2000, I didn't see Sony start selling them for $1000 or for that $600 price point to become an easier pill to swallow. There will always be shortages for highly anticipated hardware, they have an audience of what has to be at least 80 million unique people, some of them are going to have to wait. And while some of those people will pay anything not to wait, most wont.

Common sense here, but i'm saying the 3DS will probably be sold out. Lots of people, at least on these forums, want one, and it reminds me of the ds lite's release, I mean it was sold out for a while, amiright?

I'm not one of those early bird buyers, so I'll wait for like 4 months or so to hear some feedback about the system before getting it.

I don't really remember the DS lite's launch, but I remember the N64 launch, Nintendo seemed utterly unprepared for the demand, there was massive shortages. I don't recall it ever being that bad again, until the Wii. I expect them to be better prepared but there is just no way around shortages. You can produce but so many units at once.

This thing will probably be in the ballpark of 250-270 dollars by my guess. I think the price alone will discourage a lot of gamers, purely because they don't want to spend that much money on it.

And then you have to take into consideration the people that don't want to buy the system the day it comes out, and want to give it some time and wait and hear what everyone else has to say about the 3DS.

And even still, a good percentage of current DS owners who are content with the games they have, and are still planning on buying upcoming new releases for the DS.

Once you count out these people, you're left with a more realistic number of how many people will get a 3DS at launch.

But is it still possible there could be a shortage of 3DS's? Most definately. It happened with the PS2, it happened with the Wii, and I think it's very possible it could happen with the 3DS, which carries the novelty of 3D gaming similarly to the way the Wii carried the novelty of motion control.

there maybe a shortage or not it depends on how nintendo wants to play it out just like i think that nintendo makes shortages that way people will want it more truthfully said i stay away from launch systems it seems like around 40% of them brake down due to quick programing or whatever else happens

I've never had a problem with launch systems personally, but maybe I've been lucky. I kind of agree with you on the thing about Nintendo intentionally creating shortages, with the Wii anyway.
