A novel idea. I don't know why it hasn't come out yet. :) It'd be great since it's got a good storyline already in place. :)

Sometimes I wonder if the zelda fanchise is afraid to do anything really different. Look at Zelda 2, it went side scrolling and changed gameplay a lot and people seem to hate it just for that (personally I think it was great, of course I grew up with it). I think an RPG Zelda would be great, but they definately would have to think up some more locations, people, and main characters to pull it off. Lets face it right now Link's still a loner. With the main RPG 3rd party devs (Square for example) seeming to stay away from the wii (FFCC is coming but still) I'm all for Nintendo giving it a shot and pull it off. I would like to see what they could do with it though.

Indeed, characters are a small problem but you got Link, Zelda (as the main girl) and... I don't know make a new bad guy and throw in Ganondorf. That wouldn't make much sense, suggestions?

Yeah, I think an RPG would be awesome for the series. If Nintendo could give the Zelda franchise a 3D transition, as well as puttin Mario in an RPG, then I'm sure they could do something like this. There's also not only a question of characters to add, but also that some people might want to see voice actors if one was made. All though I don't think there's a likely chance of voice actors because, well.......

I made a topic about this a long time ago and no one was for it at all. I'm glad to see there are people who like this idea because I think it is a great one. I also like the idea of having a party with Link instead of Link being alone. If anyone can create some awesome characters that would fit right into the series I think it's Nintendo.

Back in the day I also through out the idea of possibly having it be turn-based because I really like turn-based RPG's and I really got beat up for that. What do you guys think?

Nintendo needs an EPIC RPG and I wouldn't be upset if they made an already epic adventure franchise into an epic RPG.

TBH the Zelda series does need a breath of fresh air. I mean I've loved all of them but it's starting to wear thin. Also they need to increase the @#$^ing difficulty. I'm so sick of NEVER DIEING in a Zelda game.

when i think zelda i think puzles and action, not level up and plot attack stratagies, i think it is a great idea but it would be better with dif characters, could even be in the same universe, but that to me wouldnt feel like a zelda game, it would be a gimick

I think it's definitely time for a change. Twilight Princess was great but it definitely felt like a beefed up Ocarina of Time. And the wolf elements was not really enough to change that feeling.

I think Nintendo also realizes the franchise is in need of real evolution. Look what they are doing with Mario Galaxy.

BLEHHH! Sorry, one of the reasons I really like The Legend of Zelda series is its real time combat system, and if it were made into an RPG it would probably blend in a lot with most other JRPGs.

Although it would be better turn based, they could give it awesome final fantasy 12 battles, then it would be real time. Happy?

Sometimes I wonder if the zelda fanchise is afraid to do anything really different. .raahsnavj

I've always thought the opposite actually

As you said; the second zelda game was drastically different from the original. Link's awakening, the first gameboy game, was also quite different from lttp. Then Ocarina changed the series by bringing it to 3D, which was always a risk back then, and majora's mask was very different from anything we had yet seen. That's 6 zelda games, with only link to the past being very similar to the original.. and even then, it was a huge advancement in terms of quality.

After that, we have the windwaker which retains the same kind of combat mechanics, but changes everything else. The entire feel of the game was very different from anything we've seen, this was mostly due to the game now taking place mostly on sea and islands and the cel shaded art style(this alone was enough for me to think zelda had no problem doing differnet things).

After that, we got four swords adventure which was an episodic type game, almost like combining zelda and a mario platformer.

etc

Most people claim zelda is not changing/growing stale because they are focusing on the wrong things. Zelda is more often then not about saving the world or zelda in its absolute most basic form, but not only is the story much much more then that, but so is the gameplay. People also fault zelda games for focusing on finding new items and utilizing them to advance.. but this is what zelda is about. The same goes for varied temple themes. Zelda is about exploration, that means experiencing various locales. Without these things, zelda is no longer zelda.

The reason I (and maybe other people) think it is 'getting stale' is because you always get the 'didn't I already do this once' feel to it. For example the water temple in OoT - a similar of the dark world 2nd dungeon in LttP (but your right, in 3D this time). OoT's 'future' world, similar to the dark world in LttP. The Wind Waker - similar to the Ocarina. The main story line (go save zelda, ganon has her), similar of every Zelda game that came before it (other than LoZ 2 and MM). And the exploring aspect of life, how many times have I met the Gorron's? Zora's? Lon Lon Ranch? Every time they have a different layout and new graphics, but where is the exploring, the 'I have NEVER been here before' feeling? Don't get me wrong, I still like Zelda, but I think this is the feeling that a lot of people get. Also don't get me wrong, It isn't all 'rerun' either. They do introduce new things (minish people / four swords), but on an epic scale it just doesn't seem like enough of what they do repeat.

Now you did point out what innovation Zelda DOES have such as changing the graphic style (2D / 3D, std improvements) of the games and play control (with the Wii and DS control schemes). I thinking looking at it from an RPG perspective though you would find the Zelda world lacking. Maybe not even make an RPG, but approach the land of Hyrule as an RPG, and come up with some 'more' to put into it.

As for me focusing on something Zelda isn't. That's fine. But people tend to lose interest in something they seem to have played before over time.

EDIT: GS removed formatting... had to put it back. No one likes a wall 'o text

EDIT2: 'knock off' wasn't what I really meant, but rather 'similiar'

I think it is a great idea, and it doesn't even need to be turn-based, it could be real time still like Secret of Mana. Just incorporate an HP and MP system and level up with experience. Who says Link needs anyone with him? Could still be a single player RPG, but just develop a nice class system for leveling and give lots of variety in that aspect.

Why do all of you think that zelda isnt going to change? Nintendo said that TP would be the last traditional zelda game. The new zelda is guaranteed to be realy different, if not necessarily an RPG. Although an RPG would be cool, i dont think that RPG is the way zelda should go.

You guys all have cool ideas and I hope they do make a Zelda RPG turn based or not but the people at the ds forums think it's a horrible idea, why do wii people think it's good and ds people think it's not?

Well, I have my own idea for a Legend of Zelda plot, if nothing else.
