on this board these days. I don't quite share it. I'm really enjoying my 3DS. Just running around Hyrule tonight, good times.

I still think 3D will take off in gaming, (making games more immersive is huge) but maybe not so much with TV.

If everyone remembers, the DS had a really slow start with its library as well, and the PSP was supposed to destroy it.

Just putting that out there.

In a year or two things will change but I can bet you anything 3D will not take off in gaming, or anywhere. It's always been a passing fad. If you like it, great, but don't count on seeing the next consoles support it, especially when 3D means sacrificing either framerate or graphics quality.

I agree, it seems like some people have short term memories.

Almost everything that's happened so far with 3DS happened to the DS before, now do I think it'll sell as much as the DS did and keep selling at that rate...No!... not till Nintendo can produce a mega hit the likes of New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart DS, Nintendogs, Brain age, etc.

I forget, which series are Nintendo releasing this holiday?...

:P

Yeah I agree. Every gets a little loopy and over the top with the launch of a new console. It's like they don't even give it a chance. I'm enjoying it, and it seems like others are too. And I'm anticipating a lot of upcoming games. What more could I ask for really?

Well I enjoy the 3DS...

I don't really use the 3D though, I turn it off, I may turn it on ocassionally just to see what things look like in it, but for the most part its off...

I just don't really like it.

Considering I've done nothing but play Phoenix Wright games on my 3DS for the past few months, the pessimism is earned.

I love how people are always going on about 3D being a passing fad. It really does add something extra to both games and movies to be able to see them in 3 dimensions like we do in real life. Now whether the technology is good enough to catch on in the mainstream is questionable. People already sacrifice quality of music and movies for the convenience of downloading and streaming so it might be too much of a hassle to really catch on. Things are better than they were in the 50's with just the red and blue classes so their is more chance of it catching on now, but I still don't think it's quite ready. I like the direction the 3DS is going in, although they need to improve the viewing angles. Also things are definitely looking up for the 3DS. It's already off to a better start than the DS and it's a really good system. Just waiting on Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. The system really needs those games.

I consider 3D to be a fad, but only in terms of how it is marketed. It'll eventually become a visual standard that excites nobody as we're all used to the concept of depth perception in every day life. It definitely adds to the visuals of a number of games though.

I don't know they are putting big money into 3D, and regardless of 3DTV adoption rates, every TV is now starting to come out with 3D. I think once more content is available, more killer content at least people will start adopting 3D and I think it will become the norm eventually, especially when glasses-free TV's release.

As for frame rate and graphics quality being sacrificed, they are constantly coming out with better ways to utilize 3D. As Laytons cat said Mario Kart is 60fps and I think that Tekken may also be 60fps and 3D. Crytek have also mentioned that they have come up with a solution that has little to no effect regarding performance.

widescreen TV's were probably seen as a fad when we had like 2 channels with widescreen content, but things soon take off once the content rolls in.

(im typing this on my 3ds so it may be a messy post :p) in terms of content i have no worries about the 3ds in the short term even. i also like the 3d effect. i cant wait to see the tech improve so there is a bigger viewing angle. most of my complaints really come from the current implementation of the 3ds idea. overall i think the 3ds will be fine though.

I have to play with the 3D on, all the time. For me it adds so much more to it, that much more immersion to a game is huge for me. Once the games start rolling out this holiday season this thing will pick up.

Though, if you spend too much time on system wars you'd think Nintendo had already given up and declared failure. haha

In terms of a lack of games, yeah, there were a lot of similarities with the DS - and to be honest, I feel that the DS's launch was far worse than the 3DS, as Super Mario 64 DS was one of the worst ports I have ever played (analog thumbstrap, my god) and the rest of the lineup was as embarassing as the worst of 3DS. Where it's different, however, is in the gaming landscape - mobile devices are a far bigger thread than they used to be, and as evidenced by the embarassment that is the E-Shop, Nintendo has no idea how to combat those smaller bite-size experience. The E-Shop (and even what used to be DSiWare) should be able to do that easily, but it's difficult to navigate and full of overpriced garbage. There are a few gems to be had, but a lack of sales and a lack of promotion really hurt the entire thing. Nintendo really needs to step it up on that side of things.

I agree DJ Lae.

Nintendo has to realize that online is huge for gamers these days. Of those gems you were talking about on the eShop, what were they? I can't really decide if anything is worth it on there or not.

The ArtStyle games aren't bad, although they're a little more expensive than they should be. I also hear from people that Shantae is a lot of fun, but it too is quite expensive for what it is. I also confess I really enjoyed Pop Island, but it completely depends on how many people you have around you with DSes. The entire game (sans music) can be shared, so you can have 8 player games of capture the flag with only one purchased copy. It's awesome.

If I've learned one thing about gamers, it is that they can be some of the biggest pessimists around. I don't know if it is because some developers know how to piss people off, if they are just that passionate, or its just cynicism, but it's always there.

That being said, I love my 3DS.

I agree, and what's worse is how they handle payment on it. Just let me pay for the games directly, Nintendo. :|

Yeah it's essentially the Microsoft points system. There's always the potential you will buy more than you use, which is a disadvantage to the consumer.

I guess we're in the early developing stages of the console's life and that always leads people to over-react when thinking about possible outcomes. Nintendo's been doing portable consoles the best for 2 decades now, I think they know what they're doing. The argument that mobile games will cut into the market is a valid one, but to me they're not nearly as enjoyable as actual portable console games.

The only thing that Nintendo did that I wasn't really into was the wii, I must admit. I felt the motion controls were legitamitely a potential gimmick, but changing the depth and way a game looks? No way, not in my books. To me it feels like when gaming went from SD to HD, it's that dramatic.

Link's Awakening DX is great deal, as is Gargoyle's Quest if you want a difficult platformer/adventure.
