I hate and have hated everysingle jrpg i have ever played except for pokemon but I don't really think of pokemon as a jrpg lol. I lothe basically squares enix games like final fantasy. I do enjoy games like fable and the souls games. I'm think about giving this a try because reviewer say its so revolutionary and great. Its gotten glowing reviews basically everywhere. Would i like it, or should i just pass it up since i don't like jrpgs?

I've hated the two or three jRPGs I've tried (Final Fantasy 7, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, and maybe a few others) before Xenoblade. I'm definitely liking this game but I made an effort to play it with an open mind. While I would have preferred to create my own characters and designate the roll they play in the party and fully customize them, I'm starting to see the appeal of canned characters. Definitely faster to get started. The story can get a little sappy and generic, but I'm glad I took a chance on the game.

And it is. To me it feels more like a single-player MMO with JRPG trappings than a true JRPG. If you can I'd suggest trying it at a friend's or somewhere.

im 15-20 hours in and it hasnt done anything revolutionary yet. it smooths out some jrpg tropes, but it still seems to work cozily within the genre. i cant imagine it converting too many players who dont like them.

It's very much like Final Fantasy XII if you've played that one. Basically a JRPG done in a very MMO style. Basically, you get the gameplay of an MMO and the typical story meanderings of a JRPG.

If you hate a genre, then why play it?

JRPG fans love it because it's a very well made JRPG, so if you don't like JRPG's or RPG's in general, pass on it

That is good to hear. I loved FF12 (despite many hating it)...especially the battle system which let you either micro or macro manage the party

If you hate JRPGs then I dont think you'll like Xenoblade. It's basically a modernization of the genre but still very much a JRPG. If youre willing to go into it with an open mind, it's an amazing game, you may find yourself pleasantly surprised :)

It's a fantastic RPG, and is unlike a good chunk of the previous turn-based jRPGS we've seen. It has the quirky storyline and cheesy characters, like most jRPGs, but it has more in customization (as in, equipment) than other games, and the combat is fast and fluid. It's a massive, open-world game with a great soundtrack. You should check video reviews and gameplays instead of asking us to tell you how it is, though.

p.s.: if you hate jRPGs, I strongly urge you to check Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy II (IV), Final Fantasy III (VI) and Secret of Mana on the Virtual Console. Chrono Trigger and FF III have great plots and characters, while Final Fantasy II is the game that defined the jRPG genre for a good couple of decades - and it also has a good story and ensemble.

SO I'm gonna sumarize what I mean by hate jrpgs so i can get some better feedback. I dislike turnbased combat or games that seem like they have turn based combat in most games unless it's a pokemon game type of deal. I really don't like clicking an option and watching somebody run over hit a guy with a sword then run back, ect. Its just not my thing. I like to be able to control the characters and have buttons actually do attacks. I dislike the how linear most jrpg's are. You run along a narrow path with a couple of branching paths but not really much. I like it when games present areas in such away that you feel like you are exploring or you are in an area you aren't supposed to be or was hidden. I also like a little bit of a sandbox element to my RPG's. You can interact with stuff sorta, and there are multiple ways to deal with situations.Last I strongly dislike loads and loads of grinding. If its so that you can use a cool weapon or a cool spell, then I'm fine with it. However if it feels like you HAVE to grind in order to keep going then I'm probably gonna get bored, and hate the game. Anyway thanks for responding everyone!

The combat is real-time, not turn based. You position your character as you want and choose your attacks (which are on cooldown timers, so you cant spam them). Think Dragon Age: Origins but a bit more fast paced.

The world itself is very open with a ton of secret areas with nooks and crannies to explore. You can find a lot of hidden high quality resources, quests that give good gear, and get exploration achievements.

I also like a little bit of a sandbox element to my RPG's. You can interact with stuff sorta, and there are multiple ways to deal with situations.

This is where Xenoblade is pretty typical JRPG, some of the side-quests have alternate endings based on your dialogue choices which can affect your influence with the region you're in. However, the main quest story is set, its not like a BioWare game (though seeing as the ending of those games is set regardless... lol.)

Last I strongly dislike loads and loads of grinding. If its so that you can use a cool weapon or a cool spell, then I'm fine with it. However if it feels like you HAVE to grind in order to keep going then I'm probably gonna get bored, and hate the game. Anyway thanks for responding everyone!

You'll never have to grind in Xenoblade. Just doing what you need for the main-quest is usually enough to keep you leveled enough for the bosses (I didn't do any side-quests after about the 20 hours mark 1/3 of the way through the game and was fine), but if you're having a little trouble all it takes is a few sidequests to level and gear up and you're fine, but most of the time you won't even have to do that.

Answers in bold, hope that stuff clears things up for you, I wrote a pretty in-depth review for it with no spoilers (link in my sig) that goes a little further into the mechanics, but its hard to put too much here when you're posting from a phone lol

Well it's far from a typical JRPG... it takes alot of elements from WRPG's like quick travel and stuff... the battle system is real time, skill based and not like other JRPG's but there are some JRPG elements in there like shops equipment... it also takes cues from MMO's with things like quest lists and a ton of items to find.

If you hate a certain genre it's best to just avoid all games of that genre, regardless of how critically acclaimed or popular they are.

there are 2 kinds of RPG

1. A character that resembles who you are and who you want to be in a role playing game and in the open world.

2. Fixed characters with personality followed through story comparable to that of a novel.

@TC I don't think it will change your mind about JRPGs if you really hate JRPGs that is.

TC why wouldn't you consider Pokemon a JRPG? It is a highly traditional JRPG.

If you are close-minded towards a genre, I wonder why you ask this question.

Single player massively multiplayer online role playing game. Makes sense.

:P Just kidding, I understand what you're saying -- the sidequests are mostly repetitive and generic. I wouldn't say it feels like an MMO, though: it has a massive world, an engrossing story, several different characters, an amazing soundtrack and a plethora of different weapons to use. The only characteristics shared with an MMO are the first and last (other than repetitive side-questing), and they're both good characteristics.

I think you answered your own question. It's an amazing game and I'd say it's way better than Pokemon but I don't think you'd see anything special in it.
