SO I'm gonna sumarize what I mean by hate jrpgs so i can get some better feedback. I dislike turnbased combat or games that seem like they have turn based combat in most games unless it's a pokemon game type of deal. I really don't like clicking an option and watching somebody run over hit a guy with a sword then run back, ect. Its just not my thing. I like to be able to control the characters and have buttons actually do attacks.
The combat is real-time, not turn based. You position your character as you want and choose your attacks (which are on cooldown timers, so you cant spam them). Think Dragon Age: Origins but a bit more fast paced.
I dislike the how linear most jrpg's are. You run along a narrow path with a couple of branching paths but not really much. I like it when games present areas in such away that you feel like you are exploring or you are in an area you aren't supposed to be or was hidden.
The world itself is very open with a ton of secret areas with nooks and crannies to explore. You can find a lot of hidden high quality resources, quests that give good gear, and get exploration achievements.
I also like a little bit of a sandbox element to my RPG's. You can interact with stuff sorta, and there are multiple ways to deal with situations.
This is where Xenoblade is pretty typical JRPG, some of the side-quests have alternate endings based on your dialogue choices which can affect your influence with the region you're in. However, the main quest story is set, its not like a BioWare game (though seeing as the ending of those games is set regardless... lol.)
Last I strongly dislike loads and loads of grinding. If its so that you can use a cool weapon or a cool spell, then I'm fine with it. However if it feels like you HAVE to grind in order to keep going then I'm probably gonna get bored, and hate the game. Anyway thanks for responding everyone!
You'll never have to grind in Xenoblade. Just doing what you need for the main-quest is usually enough to keep you leveled enough for the bosses (I didn't do any side-quests after about the 20 hours mark 1/3 of the way through the game and was fine), but if you're having a little trouble all it takes is a few sidequests to level and gear up and you're fine, but most of the time you won't even have to do that.

Answers in bold, hope that stuff clears things up for you, I wrote a pretty in-depth review for it with no spoilers (link in my sig) that goes a little further into the mechanics, but its hard to put too much here when you're posting from a phone lol
