I prefer Age of Empires of Advance Wars due to the increased depth of gameplay (tech, resource gathering, buildings, etc). It really adds a lot. They are both great games, and both only $19.99 new now :) Also, something that always bugged me were the CO powers and superpowers in Advance Wars, I never liked them because they were really just an added element of luck, and I prefer more strategic-oriented play.
You can't go wrong with either of them though! Also, it may depend on what time period you like more - modern (Advance Wars) or medieval (Age of Empires.)
I bought Advance Wars DS at Toys R Us a few weeks ago for $10. TRU frequently puts some great games in the sub-$10 price range. I go there every week. So far I got Black Bass DS for $10, Metroid Pinball DS for $10 and Feel the Magic DS for $5 (along with my $10 AW DS). All are well worth the price.
Ok here is my opinion... I like Age of Empires better because I like rpg/strategy games. AW gets boring after 2 hours of game play. When I first bought AoE I was stuck on tutorial for a few days!! :D
