Im new to zelda completely and have been playing ocarina of time, im up to the forest temple and so far i can't say ive been enjoing it.

Im finding it annoing, comfusing and fustrating.

i hate the fact that when you save and restart you end up at links house/temple of time and have to run all the way back to were you was.

i dislike the lack of direction which can lead to pointless running about not really getting anywere (Until You Use A Guide)

and the fact that you can end up dieing from simply not being able to target a foe properly.

dont get me wrong there are somethings i like such as the sound track and graphics (3DS Version), but apart from that i keep wanting to put it down.

now on the other hand ive started playing Zelda TP and im so far loving every moment.

so am i missing somthing here guys, or do i just get too irritated easily? P.s. Sorry For The Spelling.

It's an older style of gameplay. You may be used to playing current games with check points every 15 minutes and holographic objective lines. Zelda isn't like that. It's for the gamers who enjoy getting lost and exploring in their games. I will say the most annoying part of any Zelda games is indeed having to start a dungeon over again unless you manage to open the portal to the boss room.

You don't need a guide. Once upon a time games were about Discovery and Exploration. I remember when Mario 64 came out it was like the first 3D game I'd played. It was strange a mysterious and I liked it a lot, though I thought maybe it felt a bit limited since there didn't seem to be a real point to all the climbing trees and hopping around. Some time later I was randomly jumping around a room and bumped up against a wall painting and it quivered. I was like "huh?" So I tried it again and fell through the painting. The rest is, as they say, history.

i like exploring, i just dont like not being able to progress with the main quest because the only clue ive had is an extreamly vauge hint from a character which might as well of been no help at all. i dunno maybe its just me. Then again ive been playing thru Oblivion again also, now that is a game to love.

Im new to zelda completely and have been playing ocarina of time, im up to the forest temple and so far i can't say ive been enjoing it.

1. What part(s) do you find confusing? It seems pretty straight forward to me. Except, of course, the dungeons. But they are designed to make a person think. I find this aspect of Zelda games very enjoyable. Zelda games are not always like, "Go here and do this", which makes it all the more rewarding when you do solve the problem/puzzle; it's like an "Aha!" moment. Nintendo even added Sheikah Stones that give you hints, which weren't in the original.

Many games today seem too linear. Like Infamous, it's a good game, but you always know your next objective, so it tends to get monotonous. I only made it halfway through because it didn't hold my interest.

2. Although I see this more as a minor inconvenience, there are a couple solutions. If you want to take a break in the middle of a dungeon (or anywhere in the game), save the game then press "continue." Then close your 3DS, which will put it in sleep mode. Next time you open it, you can pick up where you left off.

Or, right before you're ready to quit (in the middle of a dungeon), use Farore's Wind and it will leave a warp point at the entrance of the room that you're in. Next time you turn on the game (and you're at the beginning of the dungeon), use Farore's Wind again and select "travel to warp point." You'll warp to the location you were in before you quit! 8)

3. The lack of direction? Na'vi often reminds you where to go. And you can always play Saria's song and talk to her. She usually tells you what you need to do.

4. I don't understand this. :? L-Targeting works brilliantly. It allows you to track every movement of an enemy. Although, the shoulder buttons on the 3DS are small. This has caused me to accidentally lose track of the L-Target. Now I just make sure to firmly press L when I want to target.

Hope I addressed your concerns. Glad you chose to try out Zelda, and I hope you grow to enjoy it. More people need to experience the amazing Zelda games! :D

I am new to OOT and was lost at first too. After going to Hyrule and meeting Zelda you are kind of left hanging. NAvi says you should go talk to Saria. Problem is since i never played OOT before I didn't know she was in the Lost Woods. I talked to one or two people in the village, but was told things like Saria is waiting in her usual spot. That's great, but where is her usual spot. It is things like this that can be difficult for new players. So I can relate to the TP.

Zelda's puzzle's are very clever and simple just gotta use common sense. :) Might wanna get used to them because after Ocarina, it only gets harder. (Water Temple in TP, Stone Tower in MM, *insert WW here*, Zelda Oracle of Seasons/Ages moment, etc.). The past 2 DS Zelda games, PH and ST, were significantly easier than Ocarina.

LoZ OoT 3D is my first zelda game and I only got it because everyone said that it was so good and it was extremely highly reccomended for people that didn't play the original. I am feeling a little frustrated and things some times like the person who started this thread but I am enjoying it sometimes and I think it's a pretty good game.

I hated this on release and I hate it more now. Surely it wouldn't have been hard to code in Link's starting point when you save.

The game also really, really needs a second analog stick, because the camera is not great.

edit - if you haven't already, switch to toggled L targeting. It's hideous playing the game when you have to hold that shoulder button down all the time.

i understand that it can be frustrationg ... but if you kept at it, and just think about it really hard and NOT use a walkthrough you'll find the end of the dungeon so much MORE enjoyable ... and trust me the boss battle in the end will make your pulse run and make you feel alive... case in point: I only feel the same way when battling the final boss in final fantasy games or weapons but in zelda every boss battle is a rush and exilhirating simply because its not as simple as stab here and there an X number of times and win. Theres always a secret and theres always a reward ... I hope you find that charm in the game :)

Unfortunately, games have become so incredibly easy and straightforward that even games like OoT (which I always found to be fairly easy) are frustrating to newer gamers. My advice is to stay patient, try to have fun exploring everything when you're lost, and listen to everything the NPCs tell you. The older Zeldas are more open-ended than TP, but I find them to be more rewarding as well if you're able to stick with it. I do agree about having to restart at the beginning every time you return to the game though. That aspect has aged.

Thanks For All The Advice, Am Going To Keep Playing And See How I Get On. But I Do Strongly Agree That The Saving System Should Of Been Changed. The 3DS Is A Portable, Sometimes You Do Have To Save And Close Down The Game Alot So Would Of Been Helpful To Start Where You Left Off. Oh And The Battery Also Makes This Something They Shoud Of Included. :)

I'm having a blast with this game so far. It's been a while since I've played OoT so a lot of things feel new again. This game does make me realize that most newer games are extremely linear or hold your hand when it comes to figuring things out. It's nice to sit down and really have to think about things in this game, and like others have said it feels rewarding when you figure out puzzles/beat dungeons. Of course the only thing I don't love about this game is the water temple which I'm currently on. But again that temple feels extremely rewarding when you finally beat it.

This does occasionally happen when a current generation gamer plays something developed many a year ago. To me it sounds like your problem lies in the fact that OOT doesnt hold your hand very much unlike a lot of modern games these days. It can be frustrating not knowing what youre doing but when you stop and think about it or explore around then things will eventually click. Either that or you simpley dont like the game

Some of the game feels outdated. Though, it's still managed to feel current and fresh.

I've never played Ocarina of Time until now and I'm already missing certain things newer Zelda titles have done. Specifically the exploration and combat of Wind Waker. I do agree that ending up at Link's house after saving at certain places is annoying; but once you get the ability to ride a horse, it's not as big of a deal.

Also like others have mentioned, exploration in Zelda is one of the best aspects of that series. I love getting lost and looking around the land of Hyrule in Ocarina of Time :P.

Haziqonfire

That part can get annoying, especially if a player always turns off their system. I usually just close the 3DS, putting it to sleep when I'm ready to take a break. Then I can pick it back up a couple hours later and can start where I left off.

But I actually think starting at Link's house/Temple of Time makes the game better as a whole. It seems much more satisfying when you get Epona and can suddenly travel everywhere with ease. :)

Lol, I hear you TC. It can be sort of "WTH how was I supposed to know that" spoiler: ex: Dampe's hookshot However, I love the exploration. I guess if you don't like that stuff this game would be horrendous, unless you don't mind sitting by a guide.

OP, I know exactly what you are talking about. I have had to use a guide quite a few times and I just beat the Forrest Temple. I have no idea how I would have ever figured half of it out without a guide. Maybe I am just not wired to play this type of game. I am enjoying quite a bit though, I just dislike how they leave you up to find out what to do in this huge world. I could see how a lot of people enjoy that though, not really for me however.

Wow, even my sister doesn't have that much trouble with this game, she doesn't play games at all and just got to the Water Temple. There is a quest marker, and if you just talk to people and Navi once in a while you can easily find your way.

OOT is by no means difficult. I figure the problem here is that you're young and have grown up entirely on 'modern' games which hold your hand from beginning to end.

OOT may not be for you but I doubt you'll find many others who share your opinion.

At first I thought I wouldn't be qualified to say that it's not that hard to figure out because I don't remember how my first playthrough went because it was so long ago, and I've played the game so many times I practically got all of the heart pieces on autopilot, but then I remembered that my first playthrough was when I was like... 6.

So yeah, it's not that hard to figure out... plus you get the freedom to explore without a holographic line or arrow pointing you to the next objective. You start the game as a child who's never left the forest... Link has to learn how to navigate this great world of Hyrule just like you. I prefer that kind of exploration, where you're learning with the character. It never made sense to me how in Bioshock (for instance), your character is supposed to be freaked the hell out at his surroundings, but you have an arrow telling you where to go all the time. I'd rather it leave me to my own devices because that seems appropriate for the context, whereas that kind of thing works for open world games, because your character knows their way around the city usually.

I'll grant you getting the hookshot for Dampe, but even then, Sheik tells you to go to Kakiriko, and the first NPCs you see are talking about seeing the gravedigger's ghost... that makes me want to go explore the graveyard... not necessarily because it's telling me where to go, but because it instills a natural curiosity in me... and then lo and behold! I have what I need to advance! I love that kind of game design and I wish it would come back...

Speaking as someone who had never played a Zelda game until this one, I definately am not a huge fan of iteither. The lack of signposting is certainly the aspect which annoys me the most, but the horrible 'auto jump' mechanics that constantly throw you off narrow ledges and awkward controls when using the slingshot, etc definately got on my nerves too. Its far from a bad game in my opinion, I just don't think it has aged as well as people think it has.

**Spoilers**

For the people having trouble finding Saria in the Lost Woods: An NPC in Kokiri (his name starts with an M....) tells you where to find her. Other NPCs tell you where to find him.

As for Dampe's hookshot, I could've swore Sheik tells you to go to the graveyard before going to the Forest Temple...

Once again, people having trouble finding out where to go simply need to talk to people and listen to what they have to say. It's really not a hard game.

I understand your frustration. The only other Zelda game that I have played was windwaker. This game is by no means difficult, it just forces you to explore and spend time thinking about your next objective. I admit that I have run into many obstacles and gotten stuck, but its an enjoyable game overall.
