Am I the only one that doesn't like the super mario galaxy formula?

I'm really disappointed that SMG2 is just more small, round planets andstraight paths that lead to a star at the end.

I loved super mario sunshine and super mario 64 because of the home world that had secret stars hidden in them. And all the individual worlds placed in the home world that you had to find. And in those worlds it was one big place where you had to run around searching, trying to figure out what to do to get that star. It also seemed like you get a real connection and familiarty with eachof these very diverseworlds, which made the games so fun.

Super mario galaxy, and by the looks of the trailers of SMG2, seems like one path that you can take for each star. Small circular planets interrupting every 5 minutes that make every world seem like the last. You are constantly flying from one small area to another until you reach the end where, big surprise, theres a star just sitting there. There is no figuring out what to do to get the star by the title because there is only one direction that leads you directly to it. And it does not even have a home world. Especially now with SMG2 that has a small mario head planet and a timeline.

Everybody keeps saying that the super mario galaxy games are better than its predecessors, but i think they are just a big disapointment. And i haven't heard anyone else saying pretty much what i am. Soo is there anyone else that feels the same? hah

I agree 110% with you. I don't feel like I'm actually exploring a cohesive environment. I haven't played SMG2, but it looks like theres some haunted mansions etc. to explore, but compared to 64 it's probably not nearly as cool.

Of course not, no game can please everyone. I've heard several people say that they're turned off by Galaxy's linear nature.

No opinion is unique to just one person, so of course you're not the only one. As for me, I love what they did with the Galaxy games. Basically, it's the 3D equivolent of the 2D games, but with more varied ideas. I love the obstacle course nature of a lot of the missions, which are a lot more fun than the exploration of the other 2 3D games IMO (not that I don't like them).

I like it. It just goes back to the linear nature of the original Mario games.

Mario 64 was the first big 3D game, but it honestly didn't have much in common with the older Mario games except similar enemies and high jumps (but lots more acrobatics). The open worlds didn't follow the traditional Mario formula at all. Only a few of the levels actually felt like platforming levels.

And that's all fine, I'm not really knocking Mario 64, especially if you like that type of game more. But Sunshine was almost the same thing, except they realized that it didn't feel like the older Mario games so much any more. They added the waterpackless levels as a clear tribute to traditional Mario and pure platforming. Those were a strong point of that game.

Then with the first Galaxy, they pretty much tried to fuse the new way to control Mario in 3D (long jumps, triple jumps, wall jumps, etc.) with the more traditional level design (platform your way through deliberately designed obstacles to get to the end), and I think it worked really well.

With Galaxy 2, they took it even further and added a lot more true 2D platforming sections that could be straight out of a modern but traditional Mario game (like NSMB but more complex).

So I do like the Mario Galaxy formula. It goes back to the true platforming roots of Mario. I'd like to see Nintendo take a different franchise the Mario 64 route with more open worlds to explore. That's just not Mario to me.

On the internet, you are never the only one, about anything. No exceptions. I like the formula just fine, but know at least a few people who couldn't care less about these new games. It's not that bizzare, no game can ever appeal to everyone. Not even Mario games.

I won't lie to you. To this day I still love Super Mario 64 and still play it but when it comes to Galaxy I don't like it at all. I played the first one on my friend's Wii a while ago and man did I find the game to be very boring. The levels were very small and I wanted to get out of them right away, while in SM64, the levels are larger and fun to explore in them. I wished that Nintendo had made a Super Mario 64sequel rather then Galaxy 2, and since Galaxy 2 looks just like the first one, I'm guessing that I won't like it ether.

I can see where some people would crave a more open ended sandbox type world for Mario to explore, but that is not what Super Mario is. Short, varied, themed levels stay true to the Super Mario formula. Apparently Link is reserved for the more exploritory adventure games. I would, however, love to see Mario in a full-blown action adventure.

Both Super Mairo 64 and Super Mario Galaxy have their strong points, and although the open-ended nature is nice, there are far more possibilities creatively when you're designing levels like Super Mario Galaxy. If you really want open ended games, there are plenty of other games out there that are open ended. Heck, there are times where there seems like an obsession with making games as open ended as possible.

That doesn't make a lot of sense unless you never played a Mario game before 1996.

It's a good for what it is, but to me it's Mario 64 with spherical levels which adds nothing to the space theme or the Mario universe.

PLEASE open your eyes and watch this video. Mario needs to change but it will never change if the "professional sites" and PEOPLE keep buying everything mario because everyone else will buy it.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/19-Super-Mario-Galaxy

This is coming from somebody who's favorite game is still Super Mario World 3.

That is what it is. Except what makes it hard is playing with the wii-mote. This game was made for the original gamecube controller.

I agree with the OP. I like sunshine and 64 far more than galaxy. Galaxy was interesting and all but, when it comes down to its gameplay elements, it just didn't deliver like its predecessors for me. IMO, sunshine was the best mario game Ive ever played. I liked the theme, visuals, gameplay elements, and structure. This is coming from someone who isnt really into platformers, and maybe thats why my opinion is not shared by many platform enthusiasts. Something about the spray pack or whatever you want to call it, added a new dimension of control and ability to mario's standard arsenal, like the ability to recover from an ill conceived jump or the advantage of a ranged attack, made controlling mario into a fun experience instead of a dull or frustrating one, as it frequently could have been in mario games past.

Free roam in games is bleh. Gaming is art, I want the developer to guide me through his/hers level design, I don't want to move around doing what I want, I want to play my games the way you are supposed to, SMG is my favourite game of all time.

well, i cant change your opinion but, so far im loving al of the mario games. yes mario 64 and sunshine were not so linear, nut rmember that almost every single star had the same level, and almost every star could be accessed in one level. i though that was kind of bad but, it was still fun. now that each star has its own different level, it feels fresh everytime because its not always going back to the same exact level to get another star. either way, i like all mario games so far and im having a blast with galaxy 2.

I miss the Mario 64 formula a bit, but I hated Sunshine (the world, the camera, those jelly characters, fludd, gameplay changes etc).

Galaxy was amazing, and I was fine with having some linear levels, although I personally thought there were too many. It's still probably my joint-favourite game of this gen so far though (with SFIV). Still have Galaxy 2 preordered though, and looking forward to it.

Mario games are platformers, not adventure games. There should be no question about what to do. There is a direct goal, going from point A to point B. It is up to your skill to get there. That is what made the original Mario games so great. And it is also why I'm not a huge fan of 64 (in addition to the god-awful camera). If you want to get lost in open world of secrets go play Zelda or Metroid.

I prefer Galaxy over 64 or Sunshine. Sunshine was the worst 3D Mario game. FLUDD killed the game for me. Galaxy 1 gave me the SMB 3 vide while Galaxy game the SMW vide with the SMW songs being remade and yoshi being there. 64 is now archaic but still good.

For me, it's Galaxy 2 > Galaxy 1 > 64 > Sunshine.

Actually this game has much more in common with the old 2D games than it does with Mario 64. Galaxy 2 is Mario in its purest form.

I prefer the linear levels, I was never a big fan of searching the levels for those 8 stupid red coins, which is probably the reason I never completley finished smg 1 I get bored just looking for arbitrary collectables.
