I've got a few questions about Vaporeons. I read that i need to get his defense up and hp, but i see that his sp. atk and def is higher than the defense which i am working on. I killed about 10 defense giving pokemon, and then bought 6 irons and gave him those. So 10 def pokemon w/out macho brace, 70 with. so that is about 150 w/ macho brace? Not sure, new to the ev training.

Okay, i kind of confused myself with the amount of killings i need to do to cap it's defense so heres the math i did. 10+10+10+10+10+10+10 (w/out macho brace) 70x2 (with macho brace) 140 25x2(with Macho brace) 50+140 190 62 more so 31 w/ macho brace

I'm not sure I can follow all those numbers you've got down but here is one suggestion for future EV training.

The Vitamins give 10 EVs BUT only for the first 100 EVs in a stat. ie) If you kill enough Defence-EV giving Pokemon to earn 50 EVs, you'll only be able to use 5 vitamins. Thus, if you have vitamins that you want to use, you should always make sure to use them before EV training to make the most use of them.

Macho Brace doubles the EVs earned of course but i'm see you can calculate that already. :P

You could also look into getting some of the Power Items from the Battle Subway/Frontier and cost 16 BP each. They add +4 EVs after each battle depending on which item you have. So if you kill something that gives +1 speed, you'll earn 5 EVs if you use the Speed Power Item. You could also kill something that gives +1 Atk and earn 1 Atk and 4 Speed EVs but that could get confusing.

okay so following your math [QUOTE="TheFeasterBunny"]Okay, i kind of confused myself with the amount of killings i need to do to cap it's defense so heres the math i did. 10+10+10+10+10+10+10 (w/out macho brace) 70x2 (with macho brace) 140 25x2(with Macho brace) 50+140 190 62 more so 31 w/ macho brace

you have 10 without macho brace + 6 irons = 70. Then you killed another 70 with mach brace that equals 140 So total right now = 210 then you killed another 25 with macho brace = 50 so you already made it over the limit. looks like your at 260. Go talk to the effort ribbon girl in your game (if its diamon/pearl/platinum she will be in the city with the 8th gym). If she gives your vaporeon a ribbon then your good, otherwise you did your math wrong

But that's only if you max out all 510 EVs.

The effort ribbon girl won't do anything if you've only maxed out one stat.

Okay I think I got enough hp Ev points. I started with 5 hp (each worth 10 kills) ups and killed 101 pokemon with a macho brace on. so 151 x 2 = 252. So now i have defense and hp at 252. Is it safe to defeat other pokemon now, or should i get another stat up?

I read somewhere that i can only have a total of 510 EV points. So does this mean that i'm done EV training?

If you've gotten all 510 EVs, you can fight whoever you'd like and level up now.

If you want to check if you've gotten maxed out all 510 EVs, there's a person in Opelucid City (just north of the Pokemon Center) that will tell you if your Pokemon has "put in a great effort".

Btw, your math above should be 50 + (101 * 2) = 252. :P (Not 151 x 2 = 252)

I had the HP and Defense at 252 and killed2 Altarias ( for sp. Def ) and then a yanma (for a little speed) and then another altaria and she still says vaporeon needs to trya bit harder. Is it the macho brace that i had to have equipped?

My vaporeon is only lvl 40 right now, does it need to be higher for her to say "put in a great effort".

Level's irrelevant in this case. All that matters is all 510 EVs were used.

TheFeasterBunny

ALL you need for her to say "put in a great effort" is maxing out all 510 EVs.

Since she hasn't said it, you're missing some EVs somewhere. Stats and levels have nothing to do with it.

I finally got "has put in a great effort" , but how i knew that his health wouldnt go up any higher was that because I was training at White forest and to get my defense up i would kill arons. When ever a wurmple attacked, i killed it and my health stopped going up.

Is there a pokemon terms and what they mean book/forum/site for dumbies/noobs like myself ??

Pokemon white is my 1st ever pokemon game.. I made it past the elite 4 all the way to Ghetsis (whom i cant seem to beat).... but i see so many on the boards talking about EV and IV and I haven't a clue what that even stands for or means.

EVs and IVs are only really important if you plan on playing against other players competitively.

They don't really matter that much if you're just wanting to play through the game for fun, collect some Pokemon, that sort of thing. As a newcomer, I wouldn't worry too much about it. The key to doing well in the main game is just to level up and have a well balanced team.

Trust me, understand EVs and IVs for the first time would just make your head spin. :P
