I still can't beat metroid prime one. I'm stuck at the Omega Space Pirate. Im just not cut out to be a metroid player I guess lol. I dont know if Other M is any easer either so.....
Yes, I started with Metroid Prime 1.Rod90so... what are your thoughts on metroid as a series? did you enjoy prime? do you prefer it over the sidescrollers? etc. etc.
I played metroid prime corruption and got hooked up. Always waited for a new metroid game since then
I have played all Metroid games except Metroid II, Metroid Fusion, and Metroid (although I played Zero Mission).
Started with Prime, never beat it cause I was only burrowing it.
Played Metroid Fusion on my Cousin's GBA.
Got a Wii.
eventually got Metroid NES and Super Metroid on the Virtual Console. Then got Metroid Prime 3. Then beat Super Metroid
Then gave Metroid Prime 3 to my little cousin, Got Metroid Prime Trilogy, beat Metroid NES, Got Metroid Other M, Beat Metroid Other M.
working on Metroid Prime now.
It makes me sad to see so many people who started with Prime. Don't get me wrong, Prime and its sequels were great games; but they all were missing something. A few hours into Other M, and IMO it has that "something" that was missing from the Primes. I hope we see more Other: M style Metroids, maybe with fixes to the issues it does have.
So far my only major complaint is the anoying parts where it forces you into first person and you HAVE to find some detail before you can move on. Ussually that detail is so small and hard to see I end up scanning around for 10 minutes yelling "WHERE THE $%#@ IS IT??!!" until I finally find it.
So far I've played and beat every Metroid when it was new. (Except I never beat Prime: Hunters. I just couldn't get into the touch screen controls for it)
well prime was missing the speed of the other games, and it wasn't in third-person (unless you went into the morph ball). the pacing in other m is much speedier and there's more platforms and action. lol, those 'detective' sections in other m are so cryptic. i got stuck on one for about 15mins so i went online to find an FAQ. found one, but the guy had only written it up to the point just before where i was stuck. i finally found it though. ridiculous. It makes me sad to see so many people who started with Prime. [QUOTE="Rod90"]Yes, I started with Metroid Prime 1.just_nonplussedso... what are your thoughts on metroid as a series? did you enjoy prime? do you prefer it over the sidescrollers? etc. etc. I really enjoyed Prime. It's a very inmersing experience. I do prefer it over the sidescrollers, however, I want to play Metroid Zero Mission too (for the GBA).
I'd totally dig that.Seems metroid 2 is one those games no has played, including me. Not surprising really as the game didn't sell very well. Maybe nintendo sould do a metroid zero mission 2? metroid 2 could be great with a make over and expanded play.

Agreed, I've never even heard of Metroid 2 until Metroid Other M came out and talked about it in some trailer leading into Super Metroid.Seems metroid 2 is one those games no has played, including me. I applaud you for making the distinction between gamers who have only played the Prime games and "real" veterans. Now there is nothing wrong with someone who has only played the godlike Prime games, but too many of THOSE gamers have been making completely ludicrous claims about what makes Metroid games Metroid now that Other M is out. And they are incorrect because Other M more closely resembles conventional Metroid than the Primes. And people need to know this.

Metroid II could be fantastically remade in the Other M style. I believe it was actually the purpose of Other M's style. Classic 2D in a 3D universe. Brilliant.

i agree and i don't know what it taking nintendo so long hell i'd be happy if they remade the game with colour and in gba graphicsI started with Metroid Fusion but have gone back and played all of them and now Metroid is my favorite game series.

Oh no worries man. Metroid Prime is not only my favorite Metroid game but also my ALL-TIME favorite game ever. So carry on :D
yes, i thought some of the fuss over other m might be due to expectations set by gamers who don't really understand what metroid is.I applaud you for making the distinction between gamers who have only played the Prime games and "real" veterans. I think my first metroid game was Zero Mission, then Prime. Ive played all of them besides Metroid 2 now, but I also never beat the original Metroid. My favorite in the series is Prime, followed by Zero Mission, then Fusion.

"Well you are not going to like this"? You don't have to be ashamed for liking Metroid Prime, it's a fantastic game.I can agree with that Prime 2 and 3 are more distant from the Metroid universe than Other M is, but Prime is much more close to "real" Metroid than Other M.I applaud you for making the distinction between gamers who have only played the Prime games and "real" veterans. Yeah I totally disagree here too man. Now Prime is incredibly fathful to the Metroid series and the games that came before t. And in first person whch s part of what makes it so successful. And it's also my favorite game ever made. However Other M is a fantastic recreation of the conventional 2D classic Metroid gameplay on a 3D plain. It's marvelously impressive how they captured the SUper/Fusion feel and out it nto ths game. From the maps to the locations to the field of play and the combat it's just bloody brilliant. Remember I ultimately prefer Prime, but I think Other M deserves recognition for that.

Fans haven't ever really cared about the story aspect of Metroid before Other M. Some people like it, some don't. I've noticed that this has sort of split the fanbase. I'm somewhere in between. I'm mostly confused that Nintendo even tried to put logic or realism into Metroid since it never really has been logical in the first place. Sometimes Ridley is a smart alien (smarter than humans) that flies space ships and talks, and in other games he's just a savage beast. That's just an example. Anyway, I feel that I went somewhat off-topic now. :P[QUOTE="Darth-Samus"]

lol, in zero mission where ridley is piloting his ship like he's some kind of master mind. it is weird, but remember the mechanical versions of ridley which are basically just weapons. he keeps being brought back to life in some form or another. so maybe he was once an intelligent super-being, and then brought back as some kind of screeching animal with no mind. **ZM spoilers ahead** the mecha ridley in zero mission is going a bit too far for me though; that's just ridiculous - he looks like a cartoon robot parrot.
i view the prime series as a totally different metroid series to the main one. i don't like to mix them as part of one big timeline. i see prime as simply a remake of super metroid in 3D, but with lots of new additions. the exploration in the primes is a much bigger aspect than the action elements. while old-school metroid is more action-focused. but they keep tweaking the ratio and balance of those elements so each game is different. they're all unique if you think about it.

I have played all metroid games, and beaten everyone one of them except for Metroid I and II. I just couldnt get into II (seemed dull when I played it), and I is just so bland looking that everything looks the same. I could change my mind when I play them again, but doubtful haha. Besides the first two, I found Hunters to be be very mediocre when it comes to the SP mode, and Super Metroid to be the definition of perfection :P. Other M to me is below Super and Prime 1, but an amazing game. In some ways its the best metroid game to date, and in others it needs work. So happy I bought it and am ALMOST done ***SPOILERS*** I am in the epilogue :P
I personally hope they continue the style but tweek things. I thought the story oriented approach was for the most part done very well. It had its moments where I felt it was a bit off and forced, but overall better then some other highly regarded games. I like that they balanced the feeling of story and yet you felt rather alone most of the time. As for gameplay, I think I would prefer they make recharging your health impossible when in boss battles. Either that or tweek the system to something else (or back to the orbs). The other thing I would like to see is the dodgeing (d pad) pulled back a bit. I am thinking you can only dodge once every 3 seconds or something. My BIGGEST gripe with the game may be the lack of awesome music. Don't get me wrong there was awesome music, and I get the whole eerie quiet thing they were shooting for, but I love hearing the music of magmoor caverns and other places.
Overall Other M is a 9/10 to me and despite its flaws, one of my favorite metroid games to date.
Ive played and beaten Metroid, Super Metroid, Pimes 1,2,3, and Other M. Currently working through Metroid 2 and Fusion. I have to agree with the people saying that while the Prime series was good it was missing that feeling the classics all have. I really enjoyed Other M and the one gripe I have with it is its a little to linear and I hate the hand holding and being told where to go. Besides that I believe like many that Super metroid is the best in the series and I think Other M trully captures at least part of that Super Metroid vibe, more so than many of the other games in the series.
it's odd that the whole simplified control system thing was made in mind for people who hadn't played many action games before, but from this poll it suggests that the people buying metroid are long-time fans with a long video game history. which makes me think it is more to do with getting the accuracy of digital movement combined with the depth of a 3D environment rather than specifically appealing to new people..
Overall Other M is a 9/10 to me and despite its flaws, one of my favorite metroid games to date.

I agree with the score completely. Although one flaw could be fixed by Nintedo with some new Wii controlls, as opposed to being a M:OM design issue. A larger, less stiff D pad on the Wiimote would make a huge difference.
I never noticed up until Other: M, since I didn't use the D Pad for much more than NES games. But it is very small and stiff. I have a really hard time running in the diagonal directions on a dime.
On the other hand, I dusted off my DS and picked Prime: Hunters a couple days ago. I just didn't like how its the ONLY Metroid game I havn't beaten, so I'm gonna check that last one off my list. I have an old, Original Issue DS. The D pad is large and not nearly as stiff as the Wiimote one. Its SO much easier to move in all 8 directions.
A better Wiimote D pad should definately be something they think about for the Wiimotes if they plan on using the D Pad more.
Right now I'm a 5 time Metroid veteran. The 4 Prime games, and Super Metroid (on the VC) all before I picked up Other M. Super Metroid is the one game that casts me away from being "just a Metroid Prime veteran" and a "Metroid Veteran" from your poll.wiifan001Did you like it? Then Fusion is a must-play.
Metroid is one of the few franchises I get the game in the order they come out. I started with Metroid. I never had a GB so I never played Metroid 2 (but I watched speed runs of the whole game just to experience it), Super Metroid comes second, then Fusion, the Zero Mission. Then I went through all the Primes, in order. and finally other M. Of course replaying Zero Mission and Super Metroid about every year at least once. EDIT: Oh, and I realized I didn't mention Hunters or Pinball... that is because those aren't actually Metroid games IMO.raahsnavj
You can find Metroid II used on ebay at decent prices (Don't bother with the new in box, those are pricey.) Remeber GBA's play regular Game Boy games too. Always a chance to find one at a gamestop, or if all else fails there are Game Boy emulators out there, you can play it on PC.
I'd definately recomend playing it. It introduced Metroid Mainstays like the Plasma Beam, Space Jump, and Spider Ball. It was a lot of fun and probably the best Game Boy game. I used to love playing it on my old Super Game Boy, even had its own color pallete and screen border.
Hunters was BARELY a Metroid game. Its the only one I havn't beaten. I'm working on it right now just to cut that last notch in my Metroid history. The game itself is ok, the touch screen controls are just really akward. And yes, Pinball doesn't count. Thats like saying Mario Party or Link's Crossbow Training are part of the Mario and Zelda series.
