is it just me or is the casual gamer annoying? while yes im glad its helping the wiis success and its nice my mom actually likes the bowling game but aside from that is this casual gamer annoying?

madden 08? stripped of features probably for the cant have anything complicated for the casual gamer approach added some lame mini games and online but basically robbed of features though my favorite is that play with just one wiimote as i think the gamespot review put it who is this put off by technology that they cant play with nunchuck?

the new worms game for the first time in history for the sake of the casual gamer a worms game wont allow team allying. are you freakin serious? who are they targeting here a niche in a hardcore audience(really the only people who love worms are a niche cult that has sucked in innocent bystanders to grow larger) so they piss off the there small audience by not allowing team allying? and this only leads to wonder what else is going to be missing from the game for the sake of the casual gamer? really its shameful

smackdown on the wii? no run button, no 24/7 mode and its been sped up the be an arcade game something most Wrestling fans dont want all for the sake of the casual pick up and play gamer

this is just 3 games but what other games are getting this lets bow down to the casual gamer treatment that shouldnt? really thats 3 games that i would love but have me worried because of some casual gamer. i had madden 08 on the wii but took it back due to lack of features. i am a worms nut but there is seriously no such thing as a casual worms gamer its hardcore worms fans or nothing really. same with wrestling games its the real fans or nothing here

and in interviews of most games developers seem to be striving for a anyone can play mentality which seems to simplify games. another example RE UC is on rails? really who wanted this is its a nice idea but seriously an on rails game? i think RE5 would of been much better and im sure some agree but the point is its casual anybody can play an on rails game shooter.

these are just 4 examples but im sure there are many others feel free to discuss who this casual gamer is and how the casual gamer needs to stop ruining hardcore games agree or disagree

I doubt that's the reason. Madden probably has the largest casual fanbase of any video game series. Lots of people, especially college students, I've noticed, own consoles just to play sports games, and Madden is almost always at the top of their list. And that's with all the features that have been added over the years.

I haven't played Madden for the Wii, and I haven't really played a Madden game since 05. I'm more of an NCAA fan, which has been mysteriously absent from Nintendo consoles for the last couple years.

I don't know what's up with EA. I have a feeling they're just not putting many resources into their sports games for Nintendo consoles. Maybe I'll research this a little more later to see if EA has made any statements about this.

The thing is, everybody has their own definition of what this is and what that is. I'm starting to get annoyed with people claiming to be hardcore gamers. Atleast casuals don't take things to seriously and would rather have fun instead of labeling everything.

I smell ignorance in this thread. So I guess freedom of choice doesn't mean much. I don't go around saying that country music fans annoy me and are ruining the music industry.

First off, I think the TC's examples are overgeneralizing. Secondly, it is "casual" gamers that buy most of the games and most of the consoles. Without all of that money in the industry there would not be quality games for the "hardcore" gamer. Also, I think most people fall in the large gray area between hardcore and casual.

I'm tired of this whining by self proclaimed "hardcore" gamers. Crappy, easy, stripped-down games have been around since I was playing the NES, and they always will be. To blame that solely on "casual" gamers is just plain ignorant. It also fails to see the positives "casual" gamers bring to the industry.

If you want something to whine about, whine about low 3rd party support for Nintendo consoles. That's always a good topic.

ezcooz mi bwat ay thwink youwre tawkeng da wong langwage... If you dont think that the wii appeals to "hard-core gamers" then what do you think mario, sonic, zelda, metroid, rayman and such are invented for? Yes many of which are kid friendly but they do not lack features nontheless... So the graphics suck for games targeted at non gamers so what? Thats what you're complaining about right? After a reduced priced, sony still charges twice the amount of an average wii... AFTER REDUCED... For what? The lack of controll scheme and movie graphics? On the contrary man, wii is an innovative console and includes already existant and coming games that should have its sales rocketing... And im one to say... If you want to argue with me, then you're gonna have to argue with over 10 million other people! Though Nintendo focuses less on violence and graphics, they manage to pull off the right rabit out of the right hat at the right moment to the right audience... Think of it like this...

NIN64 v.s. PS1 fair enough... no innavation.

GC V.S. PS2 - fair enough again...

DS V.S. PSP - dude you're gonna get fricken pwned, x2 screens, a touch screen, a mic, no doubt...

Wii v.s. PS3 - take everything i said into consideration...

Now, I am not very update as far as microsoft goes, so xboxwise i am not... But what i can tell you is that somewhere right now, miyamoto and reggie are sleeping on a kweeng sized bed (each) So i know its argueable and dont get me wrong, sony is great, but 70% is exaggerating...

You know what annoys me? Genuine gamers getting annoyed by "casual" gamers for stupid reasons.

Okay. Here me out. If it honestly weren't for the "casual" gamer, gaming consoles and handhelds would be doing poorly. Sales would plummit. And what that means for us "real" gamers is that major companies would no longer be major. They would be small... with not much money. That means games wouldn't come out often and wouldn't have a whole lot of effort put into them. Consoles and handhelds would be WAY more expensive than they are now, because there would be no more mass-production. It would only be the 5-10% of people who actually like to play video games a lot, and we would get the shaft. Which turns full circle, because we would have to wait forever for another game to come out for our already-paid-for expensive system.

I like new and "casual" gamers, because I always own them when they come over and play games. hahaha. But seriously, thank God for the "casual" gamer, because without them, gaming wouldn't be where it is today. They help MAKE gaming for us.

Sometimes, you need to accept the fact that they are not hardcore gamers like most of us here.

I consider myself a bit casual because I am very busy with my life outside of the internet, but I love me some Metroid and Smash Bros.

Although, sometimes, their naivity can get on the nerves of someone with knowledge about such a subject.

I'm not selfish. They can have their games and Nintendo has flourished because of them. Just give me my annual game fix and I don't care what else they make.

Nope, because sometimes I am a casual gamer. There are days when I can play 6-8 hours of games at a time, but I'm mostly playing 30 mins to an hour each day -- sometimes 1-3 hours a day. I love playing a few games in Wii Sports with some friends before heading to class. I love sitting down and playing some Brain Age 2 on my DS. But I also like gaming so much that I've been writing my own simple games since junior high, I write games for the PC, and I'm currently attending a rigorous CS program to enter the industry.

I think the whole notion of splitting up the gaming community between casual and hardcore is pretty detrimental to gamers. And I have a few reasons why I say this.

1. It creates a situation of elitism amongst gamers and that, IMO, is much more annoying than any "casual" gamer.

2. People that use these labels may (or may not) find themselves bound to a dogmatic belief that the hardcores don't need casual games and vice versa.

3. This notion stunts the success of great games (and even systems) due to a close-minded attitude about what games are fun and what games are not, based on what kind of gamer one is.

To me, calling yourself "hardcore" is just an ego trip. It only benefits you. It doesn't do me or anyone else any good to know that you think Nintendo has abandoned you because they don't have 50 games out that make you cuss for the duration of your play session.

I enjoy all types of games. Platformers, puzzle games, shooters, fighters, racing games, rhythm games, adventures. What does that make me? It makes me a gamer. I'm not "hardcore". I'm not "casual". I just play games.

perhaps i came off the wrong way

but i dont mean death to the "casual" gamer or death to these oddball appeal to anybody games that are usually fun i am simply saying alot of games on the wii seem to have this if my 70 year old grandma cant play it then the design is too complicated and it should be scrapped. basically if a game gets just a tad too complicated the design must stripped while i enjoy simple controls and games i also enjoy indepth ones as well. even zelda TP seemed a bit easy compared to most zelda games and i wouldnt be shocked if the difficulty got toned down for this "casual" audience

im not hardcore or casual id like to play more but i do generally keep up with whatever gaming news but it seems more and more on the wii theres this make it so anybody can play it even if it sarcifices the game experience in the process.

im not saying the wii sucks cause i love the controls and most games ive played have been fun but all im saying is this idea of dumbing down the controls for what appears to be a loose definition called "casual gamers" is really getting annoying

yes this new audience is really helping sales so beleive me im not saying dont keep our mass appeal titles like nintendogs brain age and all these other crazy titles id never thought would be good until i saw them in action but developers really should stop trying todumb down games and assume we are all morons and cant handle anything slightly complicated is the main point of this thread as it seems to be a growing trend on the wii anyway. besides this new audience its not like maybe after enough of these "casual" games they wont like more indepth games later which is a high possibility. fun short mini games games are good but developers shouldnt forget some of us like none mini game games which is another problem why do all wii games or most wii games seem to have this strange idea they have to have a mini game mode? which is another annoying thing

just saying here theres an annoying trend that is starting at least i think so anyway

You know that everyone here are casual gamers. It's the hardcore gamers that don't exist. Gamers begin somewhere and it's from the casual games.

Ok, replace "casual" with "simple and shallow".

And then yes, that's the main problem with the Wii's library, and the games that are being made for it.

+1  it's all media hype by the other companies to "slag" wii's success.

they (the other 2) sat back in disbelief while wii's STILL fly off of the shelf.  and said "AHHHH it must be the 'casual gamer's'.  The wii really does suck, just like we thought!  If it wasn't for the casual gamers wii would actually be behind sony in sales!"

i'v had mine since december, and there are enough great titles to keep me playing every day for an hour or two.
but i'm just a casual gamer myself..  but i'v been playing them for over 25 years...
i still remember dropping my very first quarter.. it went straight into donkey kong
