While browsing through news on the Wii, I stumbled upon this rather disappointing article.
I think that Nintendo's reasoning for no harddrive is rather foolish, myself.

Memory cards work fine for those games. Buy a 4GB card. They will last forever.Radiozo
i`m happy with that.. I have a 2Gb and is fine so far... now i do not get every game that is release on the VC like others do... :)
Note: if you get a 4Gb card make sure is compatible... some are not.. The SDHD (something like that aren`t )
Ya that doesn't make much sense to me either, but maybe they're not focusing on anything new right now because they're still trying to make enough Wii's to meet it's huge demand. Hopefully once 08 rolls around and everyone has their Wiis, Nintendo will finally give us everything we want (microphone?).7arek
well... maybe it would mean $$$ loss, but they do not have to do it themself. They could just make an update so that we could plug a external HD tru the USB connection (like they did with the keyboard)
BTW: this keyboard just make me wonder.. are they planning on using typing instead of micro??
Memory cards may work to store your data, but you can't play VC games (or regular games? I'm not sure) directly off of them, and it is a hassle to be constantly moving games on and off your Wii.rcignoni
AGREED.
I bought the Wii primarily for the VC and my channels are nearly filled up. It would be really nice to have a Wii-harddrive that adds more channels to the menu instead of constantly moving games back and forth from memory cards.

This is old news.
They don't NEED a hard drive on this console.
Get a ps3 or xbox360 if it's really THAT big of a deal for you.
Go buy SD cards otherwise.

Yes, it does. If Nintendo actually expects people to buy products of their Wii Ware service then they need to make way of storage for people to download these products on to.
hmmmmmm... anyone?
could it be possible to do a update so we can plug external HD tru the USB connection??? i do not know how the update works, but if they manage to do something similar with keyboard.. well.. maybe....
Thx
There has to be a hard drive coming some where along the line, some of those Wii ware games are likely to be on the large side. If Nintendo don't release one soon they are just inviting somebody to make a mod which does what they refuse to anyway, the same thing happened in the UK when MS didn't include 480P or upscaling on the first xbox, it got modded.

Rofl.
The likeness to an ipod in this article doen't make sence..
sure you can't take songs off of your ipod, bbut you still have the songs localy on your harddrive.. so you don't need to pull them off of the net again.. even if you couldn't play the games off of the harddrve, but at least have a big bin to store them in ...

Obviously, you have no idea what you're talking about . You can't play games off of SD cards, therefor, the games on the Wii Ware service will be limited to the memory that is on Wii right now, which is 512MiB Internal flash memory.

well, I think WII not needing a hard drive isnt a big deal, Data can still be saved onto a memory card, and a hard drive can reside on a network itself instead of having hardware. Nintendo's approach to the sharing of virtual console game gifting is a good example of this. You can buy the game online for someone and that person will have a network of their own with space to store games for free or more space for a small fee. sort of like a free online hard drive.
so there is your answer...... game gifting and data storage online....

Your post makes no sense, you can get a 360 or PS3 with a hundred million gb hardrive, however that wont change the fact that if you want to download things like the Final Fantasy game coming to Wii Ware, and Dr Mario and stuff like that, more memory is needed instead of the hassle of dealing with SD cards.
I don't mind no HDD. Just update the SD card port to use it to play games on SD cards not transfering them all the time to the flash memory. I'll need a SD card very soon. Or just make a firmware that can allow any external HDD on the USB ports like they did with the keyboards.
I think it's either Sin & Punishment or Gate of Thunder thatare the biggest games right now. Ys 1 & 2 will probably be bigger when it will come since it's a RPG.
That actually sounds like a pretty good idea. It would also be nice for the Wii to support SD cards larger than 4GB. However, I can't see Nintendo doing it for some reason...I don't mind no HDD. 2. So it is possible.... and would be nice
what is wii ware?LuIsSiUlWiiWare is going to be a new feature for the Wii that allows you to download Wii-exlusive games. I'm a bit fuzzy on the details myself, but from what I understand, you can download full games like (a few that are confirmed for it) Final Fantasy: Chrystal Chronicles, Pokemon Farm, and Dr. Mario, just to name some.

No, they can't. SD cards simply don't have the transfer speeds needed to be able to play significantly large media off of.

I'm not exactly sure what the digital bandwidth capacity is of the USB ports but I'm certain they could be used as inputs for a hard drive. Besides, those are the only ports available for Nintendo to attach hard drives to.

would it has to be a Nintendo official HDD or could they make a updated to use third parties??.. e.g. WD or Logitach...

It depends on what Nintendo decides to do in terms of its firmware updates for its console. They could decide to allow third-party hard drives or they could only allow their own.

Nintendo would never do that second one. They would be too paranoid about someone using the external hardrive to hack the wii or something.
they are regular USB 2.0 ports, so they should be able to work just as well as a PC USB port.I'm not exactly sure what the digital bandwidth capacity is of the USB ports but I'm certain they could be used as inputs for a hard drive. A USB HD would be nice and I would definantly buy it since I only have about 400 blocks left.
