I'm currently playing Pokemone Platinum and I love the game but sometimes running in a circle in the same grass patch kills the fun for me and right now I'm heading to the elite 4 and I know I have at least an hour or two of grinding. I just got my DS (Which I love and b/c of it I haven't looked at my 360 in awhile) and I'm still trying to find which games are good and the ones that aren't. Besides RPG's I might try Phoenix Wright. I heard that was decent.

The World Ends With You... best game ever.

You can adjust the levels of the monsters you encounter, I never experienced a grind in that game.

Lol, elite 4 doesn`t even need much grinding to be defeated. They are easy. Just buy a lot of revives and hyper potions.

I have to agree with TWEWY. You don`t even need to grind to finish the game, since the game features things as adjusting difficulty and other stuff. It may require skills on the harder settings.

I don't remember there being a whole lot of level grinding in Contact. Good game, although it was way too effing short.

Phoenix Wright is the crappy taste of Visual Novels Japan gave to America, it isn't a RPG.

Anyways, get used to grinding it can be very fun if it's a good game.. P.S. To the guy above me, level grinding is mostly fighting a lot of enemies for a long period of time to achieve a higher level.

The World Ends With You - the fights are largely skill based, and levelling up happens quickly and easily, and only increases HP and bravery - things you don't need if you're good enough. For me level 100 - the maximum - came as a shock, because I had never been fighting with the intent of reaching it. Also, the game encourages you to artificially decrease your level to massively increase your drop rate. After the first playthrough, you'll spend most of your time (and boy, will you keep playing) at level one.

The only real grinding is for pin points, but they can be gained when the game is off too. Many pins can be taken from level 0 to level max with just one series of chained battles. By the time your grinding for PP, though, battles will be a breeze, because you'll have a good pin deck and decent accessories increasing attack. Five-second affairs on most difficulties.

But there isn't really any 'grinding' as we know it; the battles are great fun, the soundtrack is fantastic, and in most battles (especially boss battles) it's fun just to hear the characters converse and trash-talk each other.

Don't get me wrong I like grinding more then the next man, for instance, in FF12 I have all my characters (except for the girls) at level 50-55 when I should be at 35-40. It's just that I'm a little older now and apart from friends, class, and work I don't have the same amount of time that I used to have. I think TWEWY is starting to look like a winner or maybe one of those dragon quest games (I know I'll be grinding in that one) What is so special about the Dragon Quest games?

What's Level Grinding?

martinX3X
Usually this happens in an RPG where the story progression is not necessarily well matched with the player's experience progression. So you reach a particular boss that is simply unbeatable because your character's level is not high enough and you do not have the necessary abilities to defeat him. Thus you must "grind" out battles against enemies in an effort to gain enough levels to progress in the game. IMO it is the worst part of RPG games.

grinding isnt bad as long as it dosent involve training for about 5 to 10 levels(Dragon quest is the only game ive seen that does this). Yes it is a bit annoying and the worst part of the game but it dosent make it unplayable

All the Disgaea games have wonderful grinding, if you love grinding (like me) or if you don't (like a lot of people) you might still like it. There is so much customization, it's hawt.

Try a Castlevania for a change. Still has experience levels, but nothing like your normal random encounter RPG. Plus, levels come fairly easily, and I never really find myself having to grind them out to be successful. Boss fights are very hard, and skill based mostly, but level grinding? Nada.

Fire Emblem doesn't require any grinding (you really have to go out of your way to do it anyway in most of them).

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood did not require level grinding. Fun game too.

Valkarie Profile is the only one that nobodies mentioned yet. Yes, you can level up, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter because there's nothing between battles.

what?! Unless you are comparing Phoenixt Wright to something like f/sn, tsukihime, shibuya 428 or something like that, i thought PW did a good job.

TWEWY has what I call "involuntary grinding". The fights in that game were so fun that I'd deliverately get into as many as I could. By the time I took notice, I was like level 70, so finishing the game was a breeze for me

Phantom Hourglass is somewhat of an RPG I guess, and you don't have to level grind on it because there's no level to grind.

Oh Mario & Luigi PiT doesn't have that much grinding either. I'm sure Bowser's Story won't have much either.

Tales of Vesperia, never got bored grinding there, at level 94... the third form of the final boss is still very tricky to beat

Personally my favourite RPG that you don't have to grind in is for the DS and it's Chrono Trigger. The monsters were always a suitable level to fight, but the best thing is that the final boss is always the same level as you, meaning he can be beat if you can get to him at level 1! (This is done since to see every ending you have to beat the final boss at diferent times) The story line is actually pretty long to, as well as about 10 hours of optional side adventures

You can't grind in Chrono Cross even if you want to. Some RPGs, like FFXIII, make grinding unimportant because the enemies level while you do. However, most good games don't require any grinding if you don't skip fights and are competent. I've never really had to grind in an RPG since earlier Final Fantasies or if you're trying to be extra bosses and do hard side quests.

In almost all RPGs, especially recent ones, if you need to grind to finish the main story, you're just really bad at the game.

The Castlevania games. Beating monsters and bosses and stuff, you can be a low level if you play it perfectly. Grinding is so fun on castlevania games though. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is really fun when grinding too. You don't have to do it too much, but its fun because you can acquire new demons while doing it, fuse them with others and get stronger(sometimes fusing new demons is just as good as leveling up)

  • Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
  • Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
  • Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
  • Chrono Trigger (well, sort of)
  • Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume

Those are just a few of the ones I've played. Of course there's TWEWY which I haven't played but want to pick up, and several others you can find.
