http://kotaku.com/5738668/short-cords-long-friend-lists-and-other-burning-3ds-questions-answered

We get 100 people on our friends lists, and with 3D in full effect turned on, we'll get 3-5 hours, up to 8 hours with no 3D, and more with no WiFi on

So the 3DS can actually last up to 8-10 hours likely

Basically just turn on the 3D when something cool is about to happen.

Thanks for sharing that article. I find that being on the internet does suck up tons of juice on my DSi, so I honestly bet you can get pretty good battery life with it off on the 3DS. I'll be keeping the Wifi off while on trips, which should in theory last for plenty long, and just use it at home, which is when I'll have the spare time to use it (with friends) anyways.

I told you guys there was no reason to stress about the battery life. It's exactly as I predicted: turning down some of the settings will dramatically extend your play time.

works for me, when i'm home i'l just play it while plugged in with wifi, 3D and brightnesses up, I can sacrifice those when on the road to get maximum life out of it. Well we know it comes with the docking station but i'm assuming you'll be able to plug it in like the original DS to.

From the article:

"Turning off the system's wireless via a switch, lowering its brightness settings or even running it in a dimmer power-save mode will all help the machine last longer."

This one is interesting. I wonder what it's referring to?

The brightness level matters a lot too. My Lite goes red A LOT faster if I have the brightness level set to maximum, instead of the level before that. It'll probably be the same for 3DS, and I very rarely use max brightness. I wonder what takes up more energy, the brigtness or 3D..

That's what I was hoping for. I can live with 8 hours or so, and I won't have wifi on at all unless I'm actually doing something online. 3D effect will probably go low or off for me.

Well that's a relief. I was worried that the battery life that was quoted as 3-5 hours was going to be horrible. I do a good amount of traveling and if I'm going to pay $250 for something I want it to last more than 5 hours of my 20 something hour trips. Of course I haven't done my research on the device to know too much more.

uuuh... no. just keep the 3D turned on at all times. people are failing to realize that the 3DS has the exact same battery life as the DSi, but i don't see anyone complaining about the DSi's battery life. and did anyone really need a kotaku article to know that turning off 3D and reducing brightness drastically increases battery life?

you can. because you plug the charger to the "docking station", as you called. so unplug the cradle and plug the 3DS and voilà, infinite battery life :P

Or you can be all stubborn about it and then whine and complain when the battery doesn't last as long as you'd like. Besides, I imagine it will be advisable to turn off the 3D now and then to avoid eye fatigue.

The draw of the product is the 3D. Its almost 300 dollars. We shouldnt have to disable the function everyone is making the purchase for in order to get longevity. I dont think it will really affect me but its sad to see people having to come up with all these ways to improve the battery life. Ya gotta admit, 3 hours is PRETTY short!

Not entirely.

At any rate, nobody is saying to turn off 3D permanently, just when you need to stretch the battery life a little (a cross country flight, for example).

I guarantee that in less then two months there will be an extended life battery that might cost you 20$. Sure the battery life isn't spectacular, but that won't honestly stop me from getting it.

I doubt i'll have WiFi on that often and I almost never use maximum brightness (for any electronics I own). I think the battery life will be fine even with 3D on. I mean, you'll probably need to turn off the 3D once in a while anyway. :P

I wouldn't count on it. I would be surprised if Nintendo isn't already using the highest capacity battery they can. Lithium ion rechargable cells can only hold so much charge, so until somebody invents a new battery chemistry, it's unlikely we'll see a higher capacity battery using current technology.

i think he meant a battery extension. like a portable charge. plug it into the 3DS and you get a couple extra hours.

That's certainly possible. I miss the good ol' days when you could just pop open the cover and drop in some fresh AA's.

Not sure what you're referring to, but the cradle needs to be plugged into the wall to work. It's not a portable charging station.

Interesting that they calculate the battery life with WiFi on. Though I guess it makes sense, given the kind of wireless functionality they're trying to push with it.

how about this: Turn on the 3DS when you're at home. Turn it off when you are in public. You probably wont enjoy 3D as much in public due to constant moving anyways.

People text while walking (with predictable consequences), so I wouldn't say it's outside the realm of possibility.

Nintendo BS

They "guess" it's 8 and above but oddly all the units that have been shown don't last for even 5

So what's the deal? Is there a special 3DS version that we haven't seen yet and will be out soon after this initial batch leaves?

Talk about BS. The floor models they've taken to various shows are plugged into the AC adapter.

No

The people walking around with them aren't tethered to a wall outlet

Not too sure who you think people are walking around display halls with extension cords attached to them......

O.K., seriously, did you read the OP? Nintendo is saying that you can extend the battery life by disabling 3D, turning off WiFi, turning down the brightness, etc. Now how many of those demo units being passed around trade shows do you suppose have any of those features disabled? I'm guessing none, so it's no surprise that they're hitting the lower end of play time.

gaming is much tougher than texting, if you ask me :P

but hey, i've seen little kids playing their DSs while following their moms... but little kids don't count :P
