Looking to try out Final Fantasy. I own none of the 3 consoles, nor any of their predecessors - I'm mainly a PC/handheld gamer, so thus I've managed to avoid every one that's every been released.

So like I said, I've yet to ever play one. I've been thinking about FFIV, but all I hear is how hard the game is, so I've been looking at FFXII instead, which reverts me back to FFIV as being the inferior game in the FF line-up. Help me make a decision - despite having never played an FF game, I wouldnt consider myself either a "casual gamer" or a "novice"... they just have never really sparked any kind of interest in me until now.

Also, instead of making a new topic, how's Square's other title, The World Ends With You. All I hear is that the game's fantastic, but as an adult who doesnt find immense appeal in anime (I watched Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Pokemon around 10 years ago) or the trials and tribulations of stylish japanese teenagers... well, I dunno. Convince me, tell me there's something more.

now's the time to get one..

im not saying to get a EXPENSIVE current gen console but an old gen one..more like the PS2...i am a crazy final fantasy fan who has played through 4~12 and quite a few more spinoffs. On the ps2, there is ONE game that i would recommend..its final fantay 12..unlike the older ones (Final fantasy 7,8 and 9 (PS1)) the combat system is more of a live action that an old school turn based battle system which i think u would find boring..unless ur a child of the 90's then i would stand corrected..anyway, about final fantasy 12, Final fantasy 12 has a nice mapping with live action (like i mentioned earlier) where u can actually think on how you could appoach the enemy and all is about timing and taking care of ur fronlines comrades just like in real war...if u want more information about it, go to wikipedia and search it up. i think its (so far) my favourite FF game i've ever played..its all up to the combat system (which was originated from FF11(an online one(which i never played...cuz my ps2 didn't have the online component part...))) (oh yea, since ur an adult, the story is more political..i honestly didn't have the maturity back in grade 10 to fully graps what the story was fully about but i still love it XD..yea so, i reccomend u might wanna get a ps2 (they're like 130$ nowadays, cheaper than a PSP hahaha) and get final fantasy 12...though what i just said is my complet innaccurate and rushed info about the genre ..more like some random rant on how great it is compared to the other ones..like u said..u need reccomendations..well Final fantasy 12 is for u..by me XD..though i still think u would have to seek out more info about these type of genres of games XD its a WHOLE archive, so get ready XD....alright i hope i was helpfull XD...honestly, this has been the biggest post i have ever written on gamespot hehehe XD...

P.S

yes, i am into anime XD

Final Fantasy IV is a great game, and when an RPG is considered "hard," all it really means is that you're going to have to level grind a bit more to make things easier. It's not that tough skillwise, it just requires more patience. FFXII Revenant Wings isn't your standard FF game though, the battle mechanics are very different. You should definitely give FFIV a shot though if you're looking for an FF game to play. Although if you have a PSP, Crisis Core is a lot more approachable (and really easy).

Beyond the World Ends With You animated look, is a awesome, rather fun game that is both unique and, if difficulty tends to be a problem, can be easily set to however you like. Since you can change the difficulty on a whim and if your looking for a challenge lower your actuall level. It was worth the money in my opinion, and I'm like you, I don't really enjoy the overly animated appeal,

Final Fantasy Tactics 2 is a good game as well. it will give you plenty of play through time, but it is different than the usual Final Fantasy game. Being as it is, a strategy turnbased RPG. If you haven't looked into it, it's worth a peek.

I didn't really enjoy Final Fantasy IV as much as a lot of people; and really i didn't find it that difficult either.

Revenant Wings is an okay game. Depends if you like rather stripped down real time strategy games. And if you haven't played FFXII for the PS2, you may be a little lost as to who is who. But overall it doesn't really require in knowledge of the game it's a spin-off of.

In closing, I think the World Ends With You is the better of all these games and is rather unique in it's own right.

I've played through a few FF titles though only FFIII on the DS. Have you had a look at Chrono Trigger? It plays like FF but is imo the best in the genre on DS.

I preferred FF XII Revenant Wings, but it's a real-time strategy game, instead of a real RPG. It depends on what style you like better.

FF IV is a great game but you will have to level grind to get things easier in the game. Another game i would recommend is FFTA2, is a pretty good game that gives will keep you playing it for a lot of time, but the only problem with FFTA2 is that missions become very repetitive sometimes. Appart from that, i consider it a great game :D

FF4 by far, such a good game. But i like Chrono Trigger better so that'd be a good choice as well.

If you're looking for something different then I'd highly recommend TWEWY.

As far as Final Fantasies go, (IMO) IV > XII: Revenant Wings > III > Tactics A2; but I think TWEWY's better than all of them. You might not love the cliche characters or teenager oriented soundtrack as much as most, but I'd still recommend it.

Both games are tough games to play overall, personally its hard to pick one over the other it all boils down to personally opinion really.....

FF IV is one of my all time favorites in all games. Right now the game is awesome, but imagine how peeps felt in '91? Way ahead of it's time.

ive only played two final fantasy games on the DS, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Rings Of Fate and Final Fantasy III and of the two i preferred FFCCROF as it was easier to get into than III.

Im going to start playing TWEWY and see if its any better than the Final Fantasy series.

I'd recommend getting the GBA version of Final Fantasy VI. FFXII(PS2) had a cliche story, and the battle system allows you to be insanely lazy. (Gambits anyone?) If you want the perfect RPG though, invest some consideration into Chrono Trigger.
