I bought a Nintendo DS Lite last January and ran into really lame defects and store policies
(Gamestop gave me a hard time with exchanging it and wouldn't allow me a refund when needed) so I need to find a place
that'll be patient with me when I come in and complain if the DS has any problems. Thank you to anyone with any tips or suggestions.

http://ds.ign.com/articles/721/721201p1.html

Above is an article explaining Ds Lite problems from dead pixels, to yellowish tints, and the D-pad sucking at diagonals.

After trading in my system once, I decided the best bet would be to go to nintendo repair. This ordeal continued into April of '07 -_- until I finally decided to give up. Nintendo had a heart though and sent me a check refunding my purchase. I still want one though 'cause it has sweet games and I actually have a few lying around that have gone unplayed for a year.

1st DS (Gamestop): D-pad defect made playing any game that required alot of diagonal movement annoying.
2nd DS (Gamestop): Yellowish tint on bottom screen drastically different from the top, D-pad fixed.
3rd DS (Nintendo Repair): Green stuck pixel in the middle of the bottom screen and a dead pixel (black) close to the middle of the top screen. D-pad fixed. Positive on the yellowish tint.

Now, keep in mind that I told them exactly what was wrong and their claim is that they would return the system to me (or a replacement) fixed and in better or the same condition.

4th DS (Nintendo Repair): Top screen a reddish tint?! RARE! wtf!? D-pad defect is back.

The reddish tint was worse than the yellowish tint because it was much more drastic. They acknowledged it and told me to try and get used to it but it bothered me at any brightness. After two weeks of playing, I finally e-mail again explaining my disapproval and they allowed me a refund.

I tried again mid-year at Sears but they make you pay a restocking fee. So, I lost, again. Both had tints and d-pad defects :P
That makes 6 Nintendo DS Lites. Maybe I shouldn't have read about everything that could have gone wrong before buying it. Though, I would have looked it up eventually.

Even though it seems like you're pretty much cursed when it comes to new DS lites, if you're really determined to finally get one in working order, I'd try Best Buy. When I got my first 360, I had to return 3 of them before I got one that worked and they we're pretty cool about it. Good luck.

Gamestop/EBgames has pretty sweet deals on used ones, but test it out in store firt to see if it works all right and to make sure there's no hinge cracks or buttons messed up etc...

Haha, cursed, definitely. Thanks a lot, I'll consider going to Best Buy.

Hm, I didn't even consider buying it used. And I had no idea you could try it out first at Gamestop. This is definitely interesting, I'll check it out the next time I'm there.

Anyone have any experience with buying from costco? Do they allow full refunds without having to pay a restocking fee?
I called a local sam's club and they have a 100% customeer satisfaction thing so they do have no hassle refunds but they only stock the system during the holidays or something. :?

My first DS Lite (White) came from GameStop. No problems. No dead pixels, no D-pad problems, it was good. So I don't know what's with your DS lite ... maybe it was purchased used? If so, who knows what the previous owner did to it. Maybe he/she sat on it.

Anyway, Best Buy is also pretty good with them (my second DS Lite, gifted to my cousin). Ironically, despite the fact that Best Buy is a MUCH bigger chain, I found it harder to find DS in stock in Best Buy than GameStop. Wierd. Anyway, Best Buy sells totally useless (usually) warranty policies on all electronic products. It's a store policy, not a manufacturer's warranty, so the STORE will replace it, but it's kinda expensive (I think around 60 bucks for 2 years?).

The gifted DS had dead pixels, so my cousin came with me and we took it to Best Buy (I had purchased a Year store policy). They gave us a replacement (since we still had the box, be sure to keep that). It was a new DS, right out of the back room, unopened. That one seemed just fine; they were cool with us opening the box right there in front of them and making sure. I asked and, quite obviously, if we had opened that brand new DS and there was a problem with it, they'd replace it a second time, on the spot.

I wonder what would happen if I needed an exchange but they didn't have anything in stock...

Wal-Mart is the best place to get one. They will let you return it for a full refund up to three months after you purchase it. I don't think any other place has a better return policy for game systems.

Seriously? Even if you open the thing? I checked the website and it said...

CDs, DVDs, audiotapes, videotapes and video games: Must be returned unopened

So I assumed a videogame system fell into the same category.

You've done it yourself though right? I should call them...

Update! Sorry for the double post. I just called Wal-mart, they only have Pink DSLites but Bigboi500 you were completely right. That rules. Man, I wish more places had the same return policy.

I would have to say a video game store that has good warranty or else your big chain stores like Futureshop, Best Buy or Wal Mart.
