I got a new 20" flat screen tube TV for the Wii but I'm going to return it because it makes an awfully loud high-pitched noise (louder than most) and on certain games it has two black bars on the sides of the screen, not to mention the distortion and bows. I thought it would be better... anyways, can someone reccomend an LCD TV for the Wii that works really well? I know my router for the Wii that is perfect, so I want a TV that is as well.

I've read many posts about the Wii being too blurry or too jaggy on some TVs so I don't want to make a mistake in buying another TV. I'm looking in a size about 20" or so because I'm on a low budget.... BTW I have the component cables.

Since you already got one tube TV look into an HD tube set.

It will be the best of both worlds.

That's the thing, I don't want a tube TV, because 1. they are as heavy as hell 2. they make that annoying high-pictched noise 3. there is distortion and all that, and 4. an HD tube set would be pointless considering the Wii only does 480p and lastly, I want 480p and I don't think a tube can do that, though I'm not sure.

You already had the tube TV so the weight was ok the first time

The high pitched noise doesn't apply to all

There's no distortion

HD tubes do well past 480p

So it depends what you're looking for. If you didn't like the size of the normal TV then an HD version wont be much better.

I have a 26'' Samsung 720p LCD myself. Thanks to component cable and small size Wii games actually look good. If you are buying a new TV now, there's no point in not buying a HD LCD. Tube screens are waste of space.

Ok I'll break it down (I'm going on that you live in America)

Are you using the TV for gaming or gaming plus television?

If you're using it for TV also then you want 4:3 (think square)

American TV wont be going digital for 2 more years and we have over another decade before 16:9 viewing (rectangle) becomes standard.

That means that if you get a 20 inch LCD set chances are it's going to be widescreen and that means 99% of your TV viewing is going to have bars on the right and left of the screen.

Now let's look at price and what they'll handle. Right now you can get a LCD set that maxes out at 720p for 300-350, mind you those sets will be pretty bare bones with only 1 HDMI input and such

On the other hand you can get a 27 inch HD tube that maxes out at 1080i for 399, it'll have more features like 2 HDMI inputs and will also handle regular AND HD signals perfectly.

Remember that when you make any TV reduced in size (LCD or plasma) you lose quality. Getting a tube means you get the best possible quality since it doesn't have the drawbacks of the smaller size.

Thanks for the replies! Jaysonguy I live in N. America and I'm going to be using this TV for only gaming with the component cables. Here is the TV I'm looking at right now, is Insignia a good TV manufacturer?

I know it looks a bit small in the picture, but my computer monitor is 19" and that would be fine for my room...

I can't imagine playing console games on a 19'' screen. My PC screen is 17'' but I sit right next to it, whereas TV is across the (small) room.

My room is small and so I sit about 4 or 5 feet away from my TV so I think this would be good. BTW I already said this but my monitor is widescreen 19 inch and I took it off and put in my room to see what it would look like and it was fine. I'm getting that TV today...

I think your best bet would be to save just a little longer, you're right at the cusp where you could get something substantial.

Like the one you're looking it is rather limited with inputs, wont you be hooking anything up to this in the future?

No, I think I'll just use this for Wii or maybe I'll hook a DVD player on it someday, but I'm not really going to be using it for anything else. Well I can't really save up money until later this year for my birthday and christmas, so I think I should just get, I can't wait to see my games is 480p and widescreen!

I have a 46` LCD tv and i have to admit the 480p makes it look a lot better. I just love it. Especially if u have surround sound, war games like MOHH2 sound amazing, it feels like your actually there.

A small LCD TV is definately your best bet. 32" or under should be good. Getting a tube TV in 2008 is crazy IMO, and the Wii looks great in 480p on a smaller TV. The bigger you go, the worse it lloks.

See, I think the opposite

No one makes a LCD or plasma that is as good as a tube. That's going to change hopefully by the end of the 00's

My Wii is hooked up to a Digistar 26" LCD HDTV. It shows up extremely nice on it, and I got a stereo hooked up for the audio.

err... tube tvs take up space. I use to have a 20" tube in my bedroom then I got my 26" flat panel. My room looks bigger because of it.

Yeah... hmm... Tubes vs. LCD is quite hard for me... i had a very cheap 19inch tube in my room forever.. i then upgraded to a fairly cheap 32 LCD... god i was i dissapointed, yet.. impressed. Colors and all were amazing... i saw colors i didn't even know were in my games... but god.. motion blur, jaggies, and overall crappiness was just soo much to bare.. not to mention the lag... I was very upset.. i kept it because i watch DVDs as much if not more than i game... and they were great in 480p.....

Anyway..... i got used to the LCD and eventually, decided that if i sat back far enough.... wall to wall in my room, the screen actually looked fine... but lag was still bad... so i FINALLLY got component cables for my wii. It helped a ton with lag and motion blur.. but it was still quite jaggie.. but overall, it helped a lot... I definately love the widescreen for movies and games.... idky, but it feels so much better.

So yeah.... dont go bigger than 27ish... if you can get smaller, get it.. have at least 1000:1 contrast.. and around 400brightness. then you'll be in great shape.

overall, i'd say your probably better off just getting an LCD.. although if you dont mind... go for the samsung slimfit tubes at bestbuy.. one goes up to 1080i and is quite a beauty.. But if your not willing to go for that much size.. just get an LCD and be happy :D

The Wii would still look pretty good on an HDTV. All you really need are component cables and you're set.

Hey, Yes i am having the same idea getting an 22 inch 720p samsung tv for my wii using component cables. Just think of it this way mate. When ever the wii 2 decides to come out in the future we will have the 720p hdtv to play it on without upgrading it again. thats how i think of it.
