Here

Key Points:

- Steven Spielberg involved once again
- entitled Boom Blox Bash Party
- due out this Spring
- more multiplayer options
- more than 400 new levels
- expect underwater, space, and other locations
- online capabilities allow for download of new levels from EA, as well as levels user-created levels from other BBBP owners

"'Boom Blox Bash Party' is a wild social gaming experience. We know families and friends really enjoyed playing the original 'Boom Blox' together, so we designed more explosive multiplayer experiences with 'Boom Blox Bash Party.'" - Steven Spielberg

UPDATE:

PlaySavvy: Under water and space levels? How will the physics work?
Amir Rahimi: As we were getting ready to put the original Boom Blox in a box, Steven Spielberg and his team were chock full of ideas for what to do with the second version of the game. One of the ideas that Steven had was, "What if we took the game into outer space and what would happen if we took it under water?" So we got our physics expert on the case and we were able to nail down those phsyics. In outer space, as you would imagine, you wouldn't have any gravity so blocks would move differently and the characters would float around in space. And under water, you have all sorts of "floaty-ness" and drag that you would imagine as things float around.

PlaySavvy: What will the addition of cylinders and wedges mean for gameplay?
Amir Rahimi: Just adding two simple shapes opened up whole new world of possiblitites for us in terms of building levels. Just imagine what you could do with ramps and seeing how you can roll cylinders up and down them. You also get a very different feel when you're trying to plan a billiards-type shots, throw your ball at a precise angle, and then cause the block to hit something else. With a block, that's a lot harder to do than with a cylinder, right?

PlaySavvy: Are you developing the game or any modes for use with Nintendo's MotionPlus accessory?
Amir Rahimi: No, we are not.

So basically:

- Physics will be different in outspace/water levels
- No Wii MotionPlus Support
- different shapes.

Online community sharing probably just made this a purchase for me. I (pretty much) beat the first Boom Blox in a rental, so I never bought it. But if there's an endless supply of levels in the new one, count me in.

what do you guys think the Wiiconnect 24 features will be like?

"Perhaps the most exciting component to the sequel -- other than the zero-gravity physics, of course, which we can't wait to try out for ourselves -- is the significantly enhanced WiiConnect24 option. Bash Party enables players to much more intuitively edit stages, handing them access "... to the same tool set the EA development team used to create each and every level in the game," according to the studio. Then, as the company adds, "with the press of a button, players will be able to grab, play and rate new levels from EA as well as levels created by members of the Boom Blox Bash Party community." Bashers will be able to directly share levels with EA or with friends."

Have you played Blast Works? It sounds like Boom Blox 2 will use a similar system, though probably more streamlined. Blast Works allows you to upload (through the Wii) your created levels to a website. To download levels, you have to go to the website, add any downloads to your queue, then load up the game on your Wii and it downloads them from there. It works pretty well, but it requires you to use a computer for some of the process.

It sounds like Boom Blox 2 might confine the whole process to the Wii itself, which would make it easier and more efficient.

It's good news for Wii owners but i really don't care that much about Spielberg doing another game his movies suck and if this game sells well he is just going to think he is a gaming god and no good can come of that. I hope this game bombs so i never have to hear Steven Spielberg and video games in the same sentence again.

I never played the single player campaign, but multiplayer is great fun and it has a ton of re-playability. 2 should be even better.

I have some pretty strong feels toward american film right now everything is either comic book movie, japanese remake and soon to be video game movies its all garbage. Then there was Spielberg comments about cut scenes in video games taking away from the game play, guys talking like boom blox sold 500 million copies and he knows everything about everything. Why don't we just get rid of every game with cut screen so every game can be an awesome throw blocks at other blocks game. And everything he touches turns to gold the last time I checked the last he touched was Indiana Jones and it turned to crap.

I agree with Spielberg 100%. Cut scenes in video games are evil -- especially when you can't skip them. If I want to watch a movie, I'll watch a movie. When I want to play a game, I don't want to watch a movie. While some short cut scenes may be ok, they should always be as short as possible and allow for skipping them if you've already seen it. Boom Blox is a great game with immense re-playability (something most games with elaborate cut scenes lack). Spielberg has definitely gained my respect since it's impressive that a movie guy would admit that.

This is really funny. :p

I was just wondering yesterday if they'd make a sequel to this game, even though I haven't played the original. (Going to buy it this weekend, probably)

Looks great!

This is big news. The first half of Wii's 09 is explosive. I love that this will be a good game for user creations, it's like LBP for Wii. If you guys didn't know, BlastWorks 2 is also coming out so online games for wii are picking up the pace.

Then there was Spielberg comments about cut scenes in video games taking away from the game playFleeman6019

I hadn't seen those comments, so I looked them up. I think this is what you're referring to:

You know the thing that doesn't work for me in these games are the little movies where they attempt to tell a story in between the playable levels. That's where there hasn't been a synergy between storytelling and gaming. They go to a lot of trouble to do these [motion-capture] movies that explain the characters. And then the second the game is returned to you and it's under your control, you forget everything the interstitials are trying to impact you with, and you just go back to shooting things. And that has not found its way into a universal narrative. And I think more has to be done in that arena.

... It's important to try to invest in these characters you don't get to see when you're playing them. You only get to see them during the little movies. But you don't get to see the faces or recognize the foxhole buddies when you're just targeting the enemy. Yet I applaud them for at least attempting to tell a story.Spielberg

He's definitely onto something here, but it could be argued that he just isn't playing the right games. I have a feeling he would LOVE Half-Life and HL2, since the storytelling in those games is entirely integrated into the gameplay itself. But he's right that a lot of games fall completely flat in this area.

By the way, have you played Boom Blox? Regardless of what you think of Spielberg, it's a really fun game with a great presentation.

I still haven't completed Boom Blox yet but from what I've played it was a lot of fun. Just hearing how awesome this one is going to be makes me want to play a lot more.

Yeah it was the same for me. I rented it and beated it; I thought it was okay but I wouldn't pay more than 20 dollars for it. The sequel is looking better.

How would M+ improve game play? I don't think it's needed for this game. For games where the IR pointer isn't aimed at the TV, then yes it's definitely needed.
