Why would we need a camera on the controller of the console? My roomate got one of those new Samsung Smart TV's and a cam for it. Almost four months later, neither of us has used it once and when we chat with people on skype, it's done from the laptop.

As for using the Wii U controller camera for games....I just don't see myself doing that at all. I've hated this type of technology ever since it came out because of its horrible detecting and reacting system. To me it feels like this is just another way for great corporations to monitor us.

The same reason why the 3DS has a camera above it's screen. So that developers can make use of it to create new forms of gameplay. Also, the camera could be used for video chatting with people among other things.

Yeah, lol, I kinda get that, but who actually uses Nintendo's to talk to each other when you have Skype? Also there is yet to come decent game that uses camera as controller or even accessory...you feel me?

"why would we need a speaker on a TV remote-shaped controller?" that's a question that the wii answered. let's see if the wii u can answer the camera one.

I'm not gonna lie, being able to have video calling via the Wii U will be pretty cool and a nice bonus feature.

I've had a cam for the Ps3 since 2008, never used it for video chat, only use it as a mic..... It really doens't feel so normal kinda, or necessary even......so I don't know how this will change much. It will be cool of course, but......I dont know :/

Some games have cool uses for cameras. Like LittleBigPlanet, you can take a picture of anything, and use it in the game as a sticker. Loads of fun.

Sure, but the speaker is pretty much useless. You had to use it like a phone in some games. While a little bit fun, still pretty unnecessary. Some sound effects came from it. They sound horrible, but can be a little fun for some games. Again, pretty useless. Nintendo seems to make sure there are things for their consoles for developers to use in interesting ways. It's just that there never comes any developer who use them in interesting ways, and Nintendo themselves use them for minor things, that, while maybe being amusing at times, end up feeling unnecessary.

You ever hear of surround sound? You have multiple speakers in the room, and when something behind makes a noise in the game, you actually hear it behind you. It's the same idea with the speaker on the Wiimote. When Link pulls his bow back, or Travis Touchdown talks on the phone, the sound comes from your hands, just like the characters in the game.

it's fun, it's a nice touch, thus it's not unecessary. it's not like its absence would affect the wiimote's price.

True. Felt unnecessary to me who always disables the sound, but yeah. Not affecting the wiimote price = not unnecessary.. I hope the camera could be used for something more interesting.. A camera is certainly more expensive than a GameBoy speaker (or what the hell it was), so it better!

The camera on the Wii U tablet controller does make one wonder what Nintendo is going to do with that feature? Other than making Skype phone calls. What is Nintendo going to do to incorperate into gameplay. Very odd to have a camera on the Controller?

Yup,exactly, when you're making skype calls you don't want to hold the device in front of you, how do they expect doing this really?

If it was going to be used as video chat while people are playing, the only think you'll be able to see is the person's chin and nostrils... unless they play with the controller in front of their face. :P

Yes, that is a great example. There are many others too, makes no sense not to like the speaker, specially when you can turn it off and the sound will come from the TV instead.

I think the dislike comes from Twilight Princess, which obnoxiously overused the speaker. As they say, first impressions are everything.

Using the speaker a a cell phone was brilliant and added a lot to the immersion. It's a shame only Silent Hill and NMH ever used it that way.

I've seen it used pretty well actually. Take multiplayer Sonic and the Secret Rings for instance. The treasure chest minigame. You have to walk to a treasure chest, pick it up, shake it while listening to how much rattling coin sounds you hear from the wiimote speaker (which is representing how much treasure is in the treasure chest). Also, using it as a phone in games like Red Steel, (especially) The Calling and Silent Hill was pretty neat. Also using it to detect when to stop turning the combo lock on Red Steel 2 was nice. Listening to assassin's chats when using Ninja Vision and getting clues as to when to strike in Tenchu 4 was cool.

Well yeah okay, you guys have made it pretty clear that the speaker isn't that unnecessary and I agree that it seems as a nice feature to much of the mentioned games, but back on point, what the hell is the reason of putting a camera in there? Will only limit the battery during use and will maybe seem as a waste of space (the controller could've been made smaller and more "handy" without it.

the controller size wouldn't have been affected. just look how small the camera is compared to everything else. battery life is a non-issue in an era of rechargeable batteries and controllers that can last days before needing a recharge (not to mention nintendo could, and should, go the sony way and add a USB port to recharge the controller, rather than traditional batteries). plus the camera wouldn't drain that much extra battery AND it obviously wouldn't be turned on 24/7. as far as uses go, there's no way to tell yet.
