I'll help you out if you help me out. I say get Pokemon Pearl orDiamond. I have pearl version and I love it. It's the first Pokemon game I have ever played. I can't believe that for years I missed out and believed all the fools who said that Pokemon was only for children.
I want to know about Naruto since I noticed your screen name. Now mind you I'm not bashing the show it's just that I don't understand it. Why do they all wear those headbands and why does the main character have three whiskers on both sides of his face?

Pokemon does get great review in that genre and mario and Luigi: Partners In Time gets even better although it came out a couple of years ago. Have you checked into either Jump Ultimate Stars or Bleach2? Both are imports but with the help of the walkthrus here are not that tough to get playing. I'll give my plug of the day to pinkgodzilla in seattle which carry all the top import games and you'll get it in 2 or 3 days. ---Elite Beat Agents is a great game as well although not in the exact genre you mentioned.
I would suggest renting games first, that way you don't go out and waste your money. Try and look for game series that you have enjoyed from the past that might be on the DS, or even a really good GBA RPG game. I believe a few new Final Fantasy DS games will be coming out if you can wait till than. As others have said though, search the site, and rent when in doubt.
get castlevanias and lunar knights, and meteos (original) three of my fav DS games. and isn't there like a naruto movie for one night or something in a few select theaters?

You have AC:WW which is just as much of a kid game as pokemon, perhaps even more then pokemon. And pokemon is the longest rpg on the DS. In presentation is certianly is a kid's game, especially compaired to the earlier versions. It's very colorful but there are still some cool pokemon among all the round ugly things.
You should get lunar knights it's a great rpg game. the story is short but it's quite addictive because the gameplay is niceEmployee00001
yeah. Lunar Knights is awesome. It has some unlockables and you can upgrade your weapons. the only problem is you can finish the game fast. its not a long game unless you're trying to upgrade all weapons to its maximum capacity and unlock all secrets.
If you like rpgs personally I'd would say Magical Starsign. The environments are kinda cartoony but still look good even though the character sprites aren't very detailed. It's got a great battle system. It's got a good story and it makes fun of other rpgs (I love the ygdrassil joke, though I won't spoil it). It has the only decent looking cutscenes I've seen on the DS. The difficulty's about in the middle and the story mode goes for about 25 hours.
Final Fantasy Tactics 2 is under development, but it doesn't have a releases date for North America and other parts of the world yet. It isn't an RPG, rather a TBS (Turned Base Strategy) game, but if it is as good as the first, you should defiantly check it out. (Even though it is a TBS, it has elements of an RPG).
