No, the developers have to implement it into the gaming programming. Some games can support the classic controller and some can even support a GameCube controller. Check the back of the box on your purchases to know which controllers are compatible with your game.

Classic Controller supports only a select few of the Wii retail titles. super paper mario and nsmbw do not have classic controller support, meanwhile smash bros brawl and mario kart wii and few other do support the classic controller.

I play classic controller in SSBB, but like he said, look at the back of the box for controllers.

I bought mine for Mario kart and to use for VC. I was shocked when I couldn't use it for NSMB. I prefer the classics D pad size and the Wii mote digs in my right hand after a while.

You can for SSBB and Mario Kart. I wish you could for NSMBW and Super Paper Mario but sadly not.

uuuh... why? you buy a videogame who says "our new thing is motion controls rather than new graphics" and then you want to ignore the motion? buy a gamecube then.

This.

Reminds me of the people who complain about the stylus controls in the DS Zelda's. There's always GBA and Minish Cap if you can't deal with it.

what a bunch of defensive little sensitivo's. im glad im doing to nintendo what ______ did to metallica. yeah. i got some extra loot. i guess i can buy an extra 2 classic controllers, on top of my 4 wiimotes and 2 nunchucks since they aren't good for EVERY game, like you know, a console SHOULD make their controllers. never stops with the god damn accessories. but AIGHT AIGHT. i aint complaining. after all. im saving tonnes of money in other areas.

Wait, wait, do you see the irony here? You're angry that you can't use the classic controllers on every game (and thus, don't need them), and that you're wasting money on controller parts. So you don't need the controllers, yet you're complaining about buying them. Just don't buy them. Got a gamecube controller sitting around? Cool, that means you can play every VC game. The classic controller is absolutely not necessary - if its too much cash for you, skip it.

just. quit. the wii. it's not for you. you're starting to sound like someone who hates shooters and racing games and buys a 360. makes no sense. just as much as buying a wii only for the games that don't use any motion.

The classic controller was designed for the virtual console games. The ever so awesome wiimote/nunchuk is for the Wii retail games.

Trust me, I thought the same thing before I became a wii owner. I wanted to only use the classic controller and get to play the mario games withought the hassle of motion controlls. But honestly, NSMBW is definately a way better feel on the wiimote (which I hope you know is held sideways to represent more of a NES controller which is in fact even more classic than the actual classic controller) as to the classic controller. And the motion controls are not overwhelming by any means. What I'm trying to say is after actually playing the game with the required wiimote and motion controlls I garuntee that you will fall in love with both. Now I only use and want to use the classic controller for VC games and brawl. Same goes for Super Paper Mario for controls although I thought the game itself was absolutely horrendous. You are aware that the Super Paper Mario is almost nothing to that of the Paper Mario 64? The battle system is different and its played not in mushroom kingdom but in another dimension that looks like it was created in paint program. It was one of my first purchases for the system and to-date by biggest dissapointment. This is just my opinion but I urge you to look more into SPM and not to expect something like the awesome game Paper Mario 64 was.

but you don't want to play the wii games because they don't have a "regular" controller.

This^

In particular: titles from platforms like the SNES or N64.

Some of the platforms don't need the classic controller at all and are compatable with just a wiimote (The original NES for example).
