All potential Wii owners should learn what a rechargeable battery is or take a refresher course once they get one.

"If you would like to use rechargeable batteries, the only type of battery recommended are Nickel Metal Hydride batteries. When it comes to using rechargeable batteries, you must follow manufacturer guidelines for safety and proper usage. Failure to do so could cause damage to the Wii Remote and void the warranty." from support.nintendo.com

So then follow the guidelines. They're usually pretty clear... do not tamper, do not expose to flame, etc. I use NiMHs all the time, and have never had a problem with them.
