someone told me you could trade a regular ds for a ds lite. is that true? if so where can you trade it

Not that I'm aware. When Ds Lite first came out, Gamestop had special discount deals for trading in your old DS, but I don't think there was ever a simple "give us your old DS and we'll give you a DS Lite" deal.

its like a 50$ off if you trade in your old one and get a new one.

I traded in my ds phat for a lite using the limited waranty. You could probably use that.
