you can get the game free (all legal and above board) on the PC. it looks like the 8bit version mind. i must get it again myself for my lappy :D. its being upgraded for the 3DS due to it being so popular.

You can also download the original through the eStore. It is more expensive than free but totally worth it one way or the other. Old school graphics, great story, tight gameplay and just overall a great platformer. It sounds like the 3D version is just the same game kind of overhauled into a 3D side scroller. I was disapointed to find that out as the initial stuff I saw on it made me think (or hope) it was going to be an all new try 3D platformer. Oh well.

You can play through the game in the 8-bit style on the cartridge version, apparently. But if that was going to be your only playthrough you might as well get it from the eShop.

No it seems the classic mode just replaces the character sprite. The background are still in 3D at least from that trailer.

As far as i'm aware, it was confirmed some time ago, as 'Paper' mode. I could be wrong. I'll dig up a source.

I prefer the updated Wii graphics. The 3D models just make the game look.... generic. Also, I beat it on the Wii, so I've no need of Cave Story 3D.

Actually, I can't find anything on it now. Perhaps I misread an article. :/
