From what i have read so far, whenever a virtual console game requires a classic controller, the gamecube controller works just as well since it has all the same buttons. However when playing the new game geometry wary galaxies, even though it says you can use the classic controller, my gamecube controller will not work. what is up?????

Not exactly true. Some games you can use both when playing, and some you can't. Generally when playing NES and SNES VC games, the Gamecube controller isn't an option. I'd also like to add that the classic controller is more like the SNES controller.

Certain games allow the GC controller, some only work with the Classic.

But yeah, eventhough a very small mistake in the way they word it, it should say "You need a Classic controller", not "You need the classic controller". GC controller is a classic controller in a way. When I loaded my first VC game and read that, I was all "wtf don't tell me I need to go buy the classic controller thing"

I think that each game is controller specific. It totaly depends on each game you buy. You either have to look on the back of a Wii gamebox, or if dowloading a VC game, it will tell you which controllers you can use.

Look at the picture on this page of vc controller options

Gamecube controllers work withevery system except for some TG16.

With Geometry Wars, for some reason they only gave clasic controller support and not gamecube.

If you want to play on N64 games, I suggest the GameCube controller. For the SNES games, the classic controller is the choice. You can use the wiimote itself for NES or Turbografx games.

No for one thing the Classic Controller has a perfect button layout for all games, on the GCN controller the butons are placed terrible for relaxing play. Also the Classic is a SNES/GCN controller in 1. The SNES controller is the best controller ever i think.

Actually, the Classic has two more buttons than the GCN controller (three if you count home).

More importantly, it's distinct from a programming perspective. The developer must actually incorporate support for either controller independently of the other.

ya which is nintendo's fault for not making them interchangeable. Gammes like Metal SLug only support the GC controller while Geometry Wars: G only supports the Classic controller.

But then i remembered that the 1st person spot is on the far right( I did the same exact thing when we were trying to play a gamecube game at my brothers house over the summer) Ha!

SMW will technically play with the GCN controller, but it's an absolute pain in the butt. It's next to impossible to run-jump.

Yeah I just figured out what you meant. Itz not impossible but the button layout hurts your fingers after a while running and jumping. It would have been a whole lot better if Nintendo had assigned the A button as the main jump. They should think more before they just start assigning buttons, or at least offer the players to configure the controllers themselves.

That would involve reprogramming the game-- you won't be able to do that unless if the original game allowed for control configurations. That said, be sure to look at the controller icons next to the game before you buy them... it'll tell you what you can and cannot use.

I dissagree with you there, the classic controller is terrible for Super Mario and Super Mario 3. it is y/b to run nd x/a to jump this is all wrong IMO it should be y/x to run and b/a to jump like in Super Mario World/Donkey Kong Country.

This is a minor gripe though since I can just use the Wiimote to play the NES games.

I personnally think that the button layout for the GameCube controller is horrible, especially with games like Super Mairo World.
