So I just got a 3DS XL and I did not even know about this promotion.

Normally I hate these kinds of forum posts, but I feel like a lot of people might have this same question.

The promotion is if you buy a 3DS XL and either Luigi's Mansion or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, you get a free game after registering them on Club Nintendo.

The choices are: Super Mario 3D Land, Freakyforms Deluxe, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, StarFox 64 3D, and Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone.

I was wondering what game I should buy for the promotion. Both of them look interesting and I could use some games for my new 3DS XL. Luigi's Mansion has good reviews, but I feel like it doesn't have a lot of replayability. Pokemon has some pretty bad reviews, but it looks like a game I might get into and with randomly generated dungeons, it may have replayability. Pokemon also seems like a better game for portability.

After I buy a game I still need to choose a free one. For people that don't already have it, Mario is probably their first choice. Unfortunately (not really), I already bought Super Mario 3D Land when I got the 3DS. For me, it is now mostly between StarFox 64 3D because it seems like a good game for portability and I like the first one, or Art Academy because I like to draw in my free time. I can also sell Super Mario 3D Land since it is still more expensive than the other games and get some extra cash, then get it for free. That seems a little silly though.

What do you guys think? Thanks for your responses.

I went with Starfox 64. Nintendo games published usually take a long time to drop in price, so you'll definitely get the best value from there.

I'd just keep the hard copy of Mario to be honest. Again, it will hold its value if you decide to sell it down the road.

I also got Starfox 64! Already had Mario 3D land, and have no interest in Mystery Dungeon.

Luigi's Mansion is a lot of fun, such a great 3DS game and there's lots there if you like to hunt down hidden items, go for 3 star ratings on each sub-stage, really get the 100% experience. There's a lot of charm in the game too. Some of the best use of 3D on the 3DS IMO. I recommend it. As far as downloadable games go though, Mario Land 3D made for an interesting distraction but was really easy to plow through, even for 100% left me wanting a lot more but was a decent first experience for me on the 3DS. I personally really enjoyed Star Fox, though I admit I have a nostalgia soft spot for it since I owned an N64 many years ago, maybe that might not be the same for you. I hear the Professor Layton games are good but being it's a series I've heard some argue not to make it a first experience in the series, I went to it by default since I already picked up Mario Land 3D and Star Fox prior to my knowledge of the promotion, but I still haven't played it yet.

I picked up Luigi's Mansion and Pokémon. Both are good games but I'd recommend Luigi's Mansion over Mystery Dungeon easily.

As for the free game, I picked up Professor Layton. I've never played one and it was for the GF on my original 3DS but I'm willing to try it.

Thank you for all of the replies everyone.

I decided I am going to get StarFox 64 3D for my free game, but I am still undecided on the game to buy.

Which game do you think would have more replay ability? Luigi's Mansion seems like it might be one of those games where you play it once and then it's done. Is that true?

There is a lot to collect in Luigi's Mansion and it is a pretty substantial game; give it a little bit and it would probably be worth playing again after a few months. Pokémon has random dungeons but from my understanding the randomness makes them a little stale, so going through them a second time wouldn't amount to much seeming refreshing.Â
