confused with wii wi-fi connection

dont call me stupid if this seems obvious but how would i get wi-fi for wii? say if im playing guitar hero 3 and wanted to battle random people. one friend said i have to get a wii LAN adapter for that but another said i need one of those wii/ds wi-fi connecters. im very confused help

Do you have a wireless router?

I have one and i have no problems!
It's great and it does what supposed to do very well!
