Just called Nintendo, the rep said that the Hinges are not under warranty, and I was hoping that I could get a new DSLite free, but nope, all I got was a $30 rebate Canadian and I gotta pay for shipping. Bah. I thought it was free. :(
That is odd, I remember when they said they would not fix the hinges as it was there fault but only cosmetic. Then I remember when they said they'd cover it and a lot of people sent them in. Now you're saying they are not covering it again? Anyone else have anything to add to this? I have a white that has been cracked since I first got it, but have not bothered sending it in because they said it was covered because of it being there defect....
Well, the rep said that it's only free if it CAME with cracks, not normal wear and tear. But we are very gentle with it and yet it has a crack on both sides, and one of the cracked pieces came off, so now it's a small black area that makes the DSlite click. Yay. >=[

Well it will be interesting if mine ever needs to go back because mine did indeed come with a cracked hinge. According to them though, it's only cosmetic so I've never bothered sending it back.
Well has anyone done the same though? Came normal, handled with care and yet the hinges still cracked and get it replaced free? I'm not one to yell. :S
i live in BC, and my ds got a cracked hinge and it was totally broken (coz i put it in the washer). but i just said to the rep that it had a crack and it didn't turn on, and she gave me a refurbished one just like that =)
What?! I called Nintendo last week and the rep said that it was covered and this was in Canada too. Hopefully they can still repair it for free. I'm also hoping they could replace the touchscreen since it has that yellow tint.
I guess I will try calling tommorow then. I kept seeing online that Nintendo said it was free, but the rep said only if it came cracked. I guess he was mistaken. ^_^) Besides the two cracks, there's some scratches on the DS from me scribbling on Brain Age. Woops. :P But with the hinges, do they just repair the top half, or replace it altogether?
Yeah get a new rep., some people just suck. I complained about the glitch one Metroid Prime 2, and I was stuck. I heard if you call you can get a memory card with a save up to that specific point. The first guy I talked to said no, called a bit later and got what I wanted. Â
honestly, who really cares if there is a little crack on the hinge. As long as it doesn't affect the opening and closing, and more importantly gameplay, does it really matter. I really doubt you would get a free DS for such small cosmetics Â
It does affect the opening and closing. When I close it fully, there's a still a small gap. When I try to push it back to it's max, it reverts back to the standard angle. (Like a GBASP, you can't go 110%). When you open/close it, it makes a snapping sound and there is two cracks. One crack has broken off so I see the black corner inside the DSLite. It's not just cosmetic, I'm afraid that given enough time, it'll break off fully. :S
UPDATE: I just called, and the Lady (very nice Reps so far) said that 'since it came like that' _>, that I can get it replaced for free. AWESOME. So, I will send it off today (hopefully) and will give another update when it returns. Thanks for all your help guys and gals. ^_^
Where the heck is a Nintendo Walk-In Store? Never seen an actual Nintendo retailer. Seen Sony Retailers, Apple Retailers, but never... EVER.. a Nintendo retailer. Or are you talking about resellers?

You can get a new one?! I was told that mine would only be repaired... It'd be quicker and easier for them to throw out the damaged one and send you a new one.
Ouch ... I cracked my hinges and they are covered under my Eb Games Warrenty ... I gotta bring my DS in and they'll give me a brand new one ... just like that ....
