Do you mean Chrono Trigger? Did you by chance buy this off ebay or something?(possibly a bootleg) If not, then maybe the game was just dirty or something. Try taking the cartridge out, put back in and try again.

You are playing an illegal, pirated version of this game. Discussion of things like flash cards, homebrews or emulators in these forums can result in a ban. It's also called Chrono Trigger....

Games have glitches... Also you are playing Chrono Trigger. Have you tried resetting/turning off the game? Try not doing the same exact thing; like walking the same way or talking to the same people. That is really the only answer I can give you, sorry.

That's what we call the copy protection. Although, from my knowledge, that doesn't kick in til the first save point, in 600.

That's another one of the anti-piracy glitches in the game. There's another one in the cathedral where you first meet Frog. Something about a door.

Anyway, if the game glitches in the time portal, then it's a pirated version. Especially if it happens multiple times. That IS the copy protection.

Yeah, what the above posters said are true, i`ve heard of this copy protection. Square-Enix usually put these in a lot of their games to avoid piracy. They also did that with Dragon Quest V. http://gonintendo.com/?p=73483
