The majority of peoples issues with the Nintendo USB WiFi adapter (same problem I had) is that it has a very hard time connecting through people's firewalls. I have to disable my firewall in order for my DS and Wii will connect to the Nintendo WiFi network. To my understanding, there are no ports that you can simply allow access for it to work. Try disabling your firewall and give your DS a shot.
Understand this, you are not connecting to a WiFi network via the conventional means. There are no WEP controls that you will have to worry about. The only thing you need to do is in game, you must configure your WiFi settings to accept the Nintendo USB WiFi connector. There is a button specifically for the WiFi adapter in the WiFi settings.
I hope some of this will have been some help to you. Best of luck to you.
those were discontinued... they were deffective and dint work wit vista...first thanks for the help
second i am using a wi fi usb connector made by nintendo so it shouldn't matter

i was gonna buy one myself because i dont wanna purchase a wirelss router until i foun dout
Buffalo Technologies has an adapter almost exactly like the Nintendo USB WiFi adapter however not nearly as restrictive (meaning that other wifi enabled devices like PDAs can connect to it). It is unknown however whether they have software for use with Vista. You would have to research that one.
I was about to mention the LAN adapter however realized that this is for the DS and not the Wii.
I don't own a Nintendo USB WIFI connector....but.....
For those of you that say it shuts off on you:
Have you checked the settings in the device manager under the power management tab for the nintendo USB device and ensure that "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is not checked?
