I'm surprised to say the least. I haven't played it but I doubt it's deserving of best Wii game of 2009, considering other titles like .. Little King's Story, A Boy and His Blob, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Punch-Out!!, etc ...
oh welps.

Didn't they give last year GOTY for Wii to No More Heroes? You might be right about showing 'M Rated' games are better.GameSpot wants to tell us you need to buy this game because the "M rated" games are better than anything else. New Super Mario Bros Wii is the real GOTY on Wii.

No way. I know it's lame to talk about a game I haven't played but I really can't see how it'd be better than New Super Mario Bros or Little King's Story.locopathoI agree with this. I bet it is great, but I don't know how it's better than those games you mentioned.
i'm shocked. i don't know if i'm shocked because extraction won or because uncharted 2 didn't get best PS3 game (even though i think it wouldn't deserve it) :PBrunoBRSWow, Uncharted 2 not winning best PS3 game is ALMOST as suprising as Sims 3 winning best strategy game. Anyway, I thought for sure something like Little Kings Story or New Super Mario Brothers Wii would win, oh well...:(
Wow, Uncharted 2 not winning best PS3 game is ALMOST as suprising as Sims 3 winning best strategy game. Anyway, I thought for sure something like Little Kings Story or New Super Mario Brothers Wii would win, oh well...:( don't even mention the sims 3... i'm still trying to understand why is it even in the strategy genre, according to gamespot. but uncharted 2 has way too many combats for an ADVENTURE game, and the platforming is too restrictive. it shouldn't win it. but seeing how many awards demon's souls is getting, i'll have to check it out. i'd do the same with dead space extraction, if it wasn't a horror game >.>[QUOTE="BrunoBRS"]i'm shocked. i don't know if i'm shocked because extraction won or because uncharted 2 didn't get best PS3 game (even though i think it wouldn't deserve it) :Pprinnyhero25
they nominated 2 on-rails-shooters for best wii game of the year. wtf? leaving out some real gems like little kings story among others. and then to make it worse one of those light gun games even wins. don't get me wrong. I own dead space extraction and enjoy it, but it is nowhere near the best game or one of the best games of the year.

Doesn't really matter what wins these awards, its all a matter of perception. I played about an hour of Extraction and no Clickety I did not find it innovative :P it was a well crafted game but it wouldn't be my personal GOTY. SepewrathI saw the top right corner of the Mona Lisa painting. Totally didn't impress me. I don't see what's so special about it.

MPT is a rerelease of three old games. You honestly think that ought to have won over a new game? What next? Virtual Console release for GOTY? Ohhh btw did you see the award before that Lostwinds was up for? Did it bug you too that he said MEHloDEEas when pronouncing it? Urgh! I love you.
I would not make New SMB, GOTY, but even thus extraction is GREAT, pry one of the best I have play on the Wii this year, I`m not sure I`ll give it GOTY... then again, imo there is no many others option (that i can think of right now)
note: I have both... :)
btw: I do agree with SOul Demons as the GOTY in PS3... in my chart is the only perfect score I have give to a game in a long time....
btw2: :P which one won best plataform... *goes and see*

I wasn't talking about GOTY, just my favourite Wii games that released this year. I also forgot to mention Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.
And I didnt watch the video haha.
What?
I agreed with the assessment that it was the game that had the highest ratio of quality to sales of the Wii library... but the best game in all of 2009?
I'm really kind of wondering if they actually think that it was that great or if they're just trying to get people to buy it. I mean it's not as though it was the highest-rated game in 2009 or anything; the following games released in 2009 were all rated higher:
Now, I know that we're told that we're generally not supposed to directly compare scores... but even so, if a game that scores 8.0 is crowned GOTY (which basically cannot be done without declaring it to be better than all other games) when there were other games that scored 8.5 or 9.0, then I have to ask what the point even is of assigning a numeric score when it apparently is so utterly removed from any semblance of comparability.
Havent played extraction or NSMBW but I know Little King Story doesnt deserve itWaffle_FishThis is true and I can see your points. LKS is very charming and endearing because of its quirkiness, but the controls are quite unwieldy. I can't help but imagine that a better control scheme would have made changing group patterns, selecting specific individuals from your group, and attacking much easier. The graphics are also not polished, its questing mechanics are terrible, and the narrative pacing is not very good because it can often leave you not knowing exactly what to do or where to go. Boss fights are difficult, but too often, the difficulty results simply from not having a good way of controlling your troops (i.e. you cannot only recall the soldiers while allowing the archers to continue; and sorting your troops so that you have the soldiers or the cook in front to attack takes multiple button presses rather than being a simple process) It's a very good game and definitely unfairly overlooked by people, but it has significant flaws that should prevent it from GOTY status.

I think GS's agenda is quite apparent, although none of us can say with absolute certainty that GS tends to favor M games more, regardless of other factors, like the overall quality of the GOTY in question compared to the other nominees.

I can't really say I think too much of this award, quite honestly. GS has been rather high and vocal on Extraction lately, so while I'm scratching my head on the reasoning they chose this game, I can't say I'm too shocked. Obviously, it's not exactly a popular choice from its readers, though, so I wonder if GS is going to actually explain themselves for picking this over games that were actually rater higher and much more sought after. It's not like they HAVE to, however.
BTW, I've been meaning to ask a question to a certain member here:
Clicketyclick, do you have this game or something? Just curious. :P

Well there's your problem right there. It isn't a mere 3 hours long. But I can understand how difficult it must be for you to figure out how long a game is by only playing one hour of it. ;)

I don't know about that. They gave Super Mario Galaxy the overall GOTY for 2007 despite it being up against 6 M-rated games. And SMG also won in the Wii game category, despite being up against an M rated game.
I think the idea is that, while SMG innovated, NSMB didn't. Sure it's a solid, polished, fun game, but it's playing it safe and didn't introduce a bunch of new aspects like SMG did. So I think that marks are one thing, but they award the platform and overall GOTY awards are reserved for games that take risks and deliver something we haven't tasted before -- a fresh experience.
Dead Spcae: Extraction does not deserve it. While it's a good game it's nowhere among the best this year. I would really like to know if GameSpot editors even play Wii games more than they have to. With games like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Little King's Story it's simply stupid and unbeliveable that a game like Dead Space: Extraction wins the Wii Game of the Year award.
NSMB is easily the best Wii game of the year.... I'd probably give LKS the number two slot, with Punch Out behind that, then Extraction, then Tiger Woods. I don't even know why Overkill was a finalist.... It feels like something you'd buy at a dollar store.... or like when you go to pick up a box that you think will be heavy but it turns out to be less than a pound and you look like an idiot lifting it too high too fast.
I really don't get why GS suddenly loves Extraction so much. I mean, it's a good game, and it is pretty unique, but there are some definite flaws that can't be overlooked. I felt the same way about the GS take on No More Heroes. It's a decent game with tons of flaws.... so why are they so generous with THESE games when there are a LOT of games that fit that bill, like LKS (though I don't think it has many flaws at all) and Deadly Creatures.
Yeah that tends to happen, but seriously it was a good game but it really wasn't innovative. You can tell alot about a game after playing it for an hour especially since the game is short. Not 3 hours, but its no 20hr epic either. And yeah I would agree with what many are saying, it seems a bit fishy for GS to choose this game over the obvious NSMB or other gems like Madworld or Silent Hill.Well there's your problem right there. It isn't a mere 3 hours long. But I can understand how difficult it must be for you to figure out how long a game is by only playing one hour of it. ;)

Extraction was good, but Muramasa, Rune Factory, LKS and NSMB were all great games and couldve been solid contenders for Wii GOTY.

You kind of need to get to the end of the game to get a feel for all the surprises and stuff to see how it innovates by watching how the story unfolds and all the situations it puts you into. Since you already have the game, I'd try finishing it before you declare it to not be innovative. I get that NSMB is a very obvious choice, which it was so refreshing for me to see GS give this award to something else and not participate in the whole if-it's-nintendo-made-it-has-to-win thing. If NSMB got this award, would it matter? Would it do anything for the game? Would anyone care? DSE could use the recognition for its quality way more than NSMB can, and it was far more experimental and risky. Maybe NSMB is overall the more polished game, but is that really what these awards are about? NSMB is a piece of quartz that has been buffeted by the sands and waters over the years till its surface is a gleaming mirror. DSE, on the other hand, is a diamond in the rough.Well there's your problem right there. It isn't a mere 3 hours long. Scribblenauts was probably the most innovative game in the entire year. I can't remember any other game in existence whose core gameplay revolved around the ability to write anything in the English language and have it be usable. Yet not only was the DS game of the year yet another GTA game, Scribblenauts did not even receive an editorial nomination.
And then there was Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, too. How many horror games were released this year that had no combat whatsoever? If you want to talk risk, I think that's an awfully huge risk, one which many people found rather distasteful. And, to be honest, even though we were guided step-by-step in DS:E whereas SH:SM had to accomodate the gamer's ability to walk around free, I still found it a far more engrossing experience. Yet it didn't even receive any GOTY nomination, let alone an editorial nomination. I would have given it the Wii GOTY without a moment's hesitation.
DS:E was a pretty good game, sure. And yes, it had that one single moment that was really well done. But I cannot help but feel that there were games that were both better overall and more fresher in their feel released on the Wii this year, which makes it so that I can't help but wonder when you put this award next to its award of "best game no one played".
