de Blob is an upcoming video game of the puzzle genre for the Wii developed by Blue Tongue. Both are being published by THQ. The game will be released on September 26, 2008. de Blob is an action puzzle title that allows players to explore and liberate an alien city from the evil, monochromatic I.N.K.T. Corporation that has taken over the city and outlawed all color and fun from daily life. Playing as de Blob, gamers will embark on a quest to re-animate the city of Chroma, and bring spunk and character back to the oppressed, by splattering buildings, landmarks, and citizens with color. de Blob features an intricate single player campaign as well as a multiplayer experience that supports up to four competitors via split screen.

Videos

1 - Teaser Trailer

2 - Developer Interview

3 - Billboards Gameplay

Gameplay

The player starts out as a ball of clear water. They then roll the character around until it runs into one of many paint cans which consist of the basic rainbow colors. de Blob then rolls and jumps around splashing and sliding on the city's buildings, smearing his newfound hue, returning their color. As he does this the once-silent city gradually regains its soundtrack with each "stroke" of de Blob, with each color corresponding to a particular sound. When the character runs into an orange can and spreads that color, guitar music will start playing. If the player turns yellow, piano will then be added to the mix. If the player wants to rid themself of their color, they can go to a pool. If they maintain their current color and run into another paint can, it mixes the color of the can and their current color, potentially adding new musical highlights. As the game advances, de Blob will advance through the game by "cla*sing up" from 1, at the start of the level, to 100 by the end. He does this by fulfilling missions. With every number he advances, he grows bigger and bigger, until he is huge and capable of taking on more powerful tasks. The more paint added to the city, the more citizens, known as Raydians, will arrive with various missions for de Blob, including obliterating groups of I.N.K.T. patrollers, painting entire landmarks, or even painting various locations by hopping from target from target without touching any other surfaces. Eventually there are vast pools of "ink" splattered by the evil corporation and cause de Blob to turn black and lose life until he washes it out with water or color. The enemies have not been officially named yet and are only known as the I.N.K.T. opressors. They come in various categories such as the ground cla*s which walk, the air cla*s which can fly when they turn their hat into a personalised zeppelin, and the water cla*s that fires ink from the seas via old-st*yle steamboat. Painting the city in diverse ways can open up gates and other required necessities for the game as well as significantly increase one's score and other hidden nuances. Painting a wall by hopping from wall to wall without stopping counts as combos, and there are tricks and moves the player can use in order to increase their points.

This must be the first THQ game I'm really interested in. How about you?

I wonder if Nintendo/THQ will team up and make Mario clean this damn mess.

it looks alright...gfx seem kinda chunky looking, but Wii screens always do for the most part.

I'll keep an eye on it.

Besides the obvious one, there aren't many 3d platformers on the wii, so even if this one turns out to be only decent, I'll probably still pick it up. I'm not a fan of the time limit, but I could see it working out.

This game has been on my list since I first saw it. I love the games premise and the more I see the more I am reasurred that the game will have enough meat to keep playing for a while. I'm going to buy this game, along with Samba de Amigo, Sam and Max Season One, and Wario Land Shake in the month of September.

:lol::lol::lol:

Oh God, you haven't been around long, have you?

People have been calling Jason this-and-that for years now, you think he'll take offence to it just now?!?

He only stayed away from the "other" consoles because they didn't interest him enough to warrant a purchase. Now that he's seen the E3 press conferences, he's decided on another console to go along with his Wii.

If that makes him a fanboy, then I guess we're going to have to change the definition in order to fit his situation.

...

As for the game, I'm getting it for sure....and if it sells poorly, I'm not unwrapping it. Ever.

I saw this game at Comic Con. I didn't get a chance to go hands on myself, but from what I saw it looked a lot more polished than I imagined. When I first heard of the game and saw some vids it seemed like a nice little Wiiware type game. What I saw at Comic Con look like it could be one of the better full blown Wii games ala Zack and Wiki.

You guys have to realize that Jason's definition of "shovelware" is a game that took no time to make because 1) the game is broken, or 2) it's a port of an older game.

So, while you might think that Carnival Games is a crappy game that doesn't appeal to you, it still technically "works" (ie, there are no bugs), and it isn't a port.

Do I agree with his definition? Not really. But that doesn't mean that his opinion is wrong, it's just a different opinion.

Very charming art style :) I'll definately be picking this up. I love the idea of the music reacting to what colours you use. To me, this game has WIN written all over it.

Developer Blue Tongue, based in Melbourne, are set to release de Blob in a few weeks and the first review is out. Ultimate Nintendo magazine has just arrived. Its extensive review of de Blob ends in a 10/10 score, and a verdict that reads:

The first third-party Wii game that would have Mr. Miyamoto bowing in awed respect. De Blob is da bomb!

Hi praise indeed, and interested Wii fans should definitely check out the magazine when they get a chance for the full run-down on what makes it so good. Besides being stoked for our fellow Aussies, we also had the game sitting pretty on our 10 Upcoming Wii Games that will Turn You On.
