Didn't know they would reveal a Mario game but from what I've seen it looks like a good adventure with a new moves Mario can to to transverse the environment. I'm a little worried about non-Mario set pieces, characters and environments. Seems a little off seeing Mario outside the Mushroom Kingdom and in a different environment. But it looks cools and I would be buying it but I am still a bit cautious(tiny tiny fragment of skeptical) about it. Still buying it day 1.
It looked pretty good overall. I just thought that NYC looked a bit bland for a Mario game. Othe regions looked fantastic.
the graphics for the non Mario style characters (humans) looks terrible but I always look forward to the next mainstream Mario game and its been a long time coming.
The opening was odd and it looks somewhat reductive from the step Mario Galaxy took, but Mario games are pretty much always good.
I think it looks like the best 3D Mario game in over a decade....which is fitting because I didn't care about Galaxy.
It is probably going to be the best game on the Switch when it comes out.
@soul_starter: Its not a graphics thing, its an art thing. Clearly they want Mario and the city design to standout, that's why they are all wearing the same clothes and are mostly featureless. Anyway game looks amazing, definitely looks like a fresh take on Mario, but in the vein of Mario 64 and Sunshine.

so they purposefully made them look blocky as if theyd walked straight out of shenmue?
It's a little early to tell, especially after such a small trailer that did not do much to show us what the title is all about.
When I saw the city, I hated the game. When I started to see more "MARIO" like areas, I was far more pleased.
I want to see how this Hat mechanic will play into the game and how it will change what I have come to expect of a 3-D mario. Maybe we will see the return of Hat abilities like Metal or Flying.
The thing with new Mario games is that you never know what you're going to get. Naysayers like to talk about Mario being "recycled" all the time, but this couldn't be further from the truth when you consider the main games in the series - Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy were wildly different and innovative experiences.
Much as I adored the Super Mario Galaxy games, I was hoping to see a new Mario that fits more closely to the Super Mario 64 mould - that is, a game set in the Mushroom Kingdom, where you explore a large world full of different environments.
Super Mario Odyssey is a return to that general format, which I appreciate. I'm honestly not sure how I feel about the Mushroom Kingdom looking so much like NYC...I was hoping for the Mushroom Kingdom that we see in other Mario games. It feels weird and jarring, and almost a Sonic Adventure style bungle.
That said, this is EAD, and I have every confidence that they won't bungle this aspect. Honestly though, we'll just have to see how it all comes together. I'm excited to play it, and I'm looking forward to something refreshing.
@djura: Its not the mushroom kingdom, it is for all intensive purposes NYC. And the big difference between Sonic and Mario, is the city doesn't limit Mario's gameplay style at all. In fact, hopping around skyscrapers and other aspects of a city like light poles, traffic etc. allow for new takes on those mechanics. Sonic 2006, most of the mechanics that make Sonic were lost due to the city setting, and the ridiculous story and mission based structure did nothing to help. All those things, Nintendo will obviously easily avoid.
For the first time ever, I have no idea what to expect from a Mario game. Maybe that's a good thing? I have no idea. I've never felt so mixed about a Nintendo system before.
I'm super excited about having the sandbox back. But I feel like the trailer let me down... maybe just a bad trailer. I'll be hyped regardless.

I will reserve judgement on the NYC thing. I know I'm being pedantic, but clearly Nintendo isn't saying it's actually NYC in the canon.
I suspect that they will either label it as the Mushroom Kingdom (or part of it), or they will give it no name or it'll be some totally different locale.
In terms of Sonic, I largely agree with you. That's why I said that I don't think EAD will get it wrong; they are simply better game designers than Sonic Team were around the Sonic Adventure era. That said, my objection to the "real world" aesthetic in Sonic wasn't mechanical per se, it was thematic - it just didn't remotely match the world that Sonic had inhabited for his entire history. I wanted to see something akin to the anime FMV sequence from Sonic CD realised as a large 3D world.
In any case, we've seen a brief snippet of footage. The proof will be in the playing. One thing I'm really happy about is the huge variety of locales we've seen in the footage so far - I think that suggests good things for the final game.
mario odyssey its brilliant and fun and the third reason buy switch this year the others two 1 zelda 2 xenoblade 2
Oh ho yeah!
Switch has got the games! ^_^
@so_hai: it depends on your skill level and how easily bored you get. For me the difficulty was ok but the games got boring by world 4. I guess I've out grown linear mario. For a long time 3d Mario has been my thing. Expliring, finding secrets and enjoying the levels at my own pace. 3d land tried to be a combination game but it was still linear mario at best I'd give it a C-. I guess their not bad but they're average bordering on below average.
I'm not sold on the "New Donk City" level. The rest of the game looks impressive. It's an HD Main series Mario game, that I was hoping to get on my Wii U (3D World was good, but not a main series title). None of the Main series games are bad, except Sunshine is definitely sub-par.
I'm excited, but I feel I need to see more. I don't have the same hype that I did when I first saw Super Mario Galaxy.

i think the city is ninetndo listening to all the people who wanted a more "mature" mario game.

lol i doubt they bring in any other nintendo ips.
would be great... mario universe game.
@KBFloYd: I think he took over the city though, the streets are named after him if you go back and check the signs.
Its called New Donk City, Dixie Theater, Crazy Cap building, Dixie St., Big Tower is what Kong would climb, Diddy's Mart,

o.o really?
that would be awesome!
It certainly looks great.
If they nail the gameplay and missions in each area, and the atmosphere, then this could be the game that makes Switch a must buy for all serious gamers. Same way as Mario 64 made N64 a must buy for us serious gamers.
However, if it turns out to be just as dispirited and lame-o as Mario Galaxy games, then I'll pass.
We need a Mario title that gives us a sense of grand adventure. Mario Sunshine and Mario 64 did this. Galaxys did not. I played both Galaxys and they just felt, you know, tedious. I just wasn't having fun.
Clear back in 2007, I think before I even got Galaxy, I was having a conversation with a then-coworker about how I'd love to see a Mario game set in a city like NYC. So for me, seeing that level was like a dream 10 years in the making coming true. I don't really get all of the b&%*#ing, I guess people are content to have Mario float around in goofy space forever with a camera you can't control.
I say In-Bewteen.
We know very little. We do know that there is Mario 64 style controls, however, it looked like a sequel to Mario 64 that should have came out on Gamecube or Wii. Just like BotW is something we should have scene 1-2 years ago on Wii U.
I don't mind waiting several years for games, cause there is so much great content from so many devs that it sucks when you're spending too much time with just 1-2 franchises, like I only do CoD on Ops cause I don't want a new experience every year.
But it sucks when a game like The Last Guardian and Breath of the Wild, were meant for the last system, and you can 100% tell they weren't for PS4 or Switch. People like me don't mind playing older games. But you get the "Forever Effect". When everyone waited for Duke Nukem, it was highly anticipated and expectations so high. The Last Guardian got that, and instead of being a 90+ on metacritic its an 80+. I just gonna hate it when it is like Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword, and people weren't fulfilled like they were after waiting for Ocarina. How long did we wait for this exact type of game, FOREVER.
