A protect (hard) case is more of a second outer shell for the DS Lite, giving it some durability if it was to be dropped. A silicon case is a rubber covering for the DS, not as sturdy as a protect case, but I guess it gives grip.
A Protect case can protect your DS from being scratch from a fall as well as being heavily damaged from that fall. I know all of you would agree that it doesn't completely protect the DS from a fall. A fall is a fall even how high or low it is. You should never drop you DS. The problem I have with Protect cases or hard case is that they are hard to put on your DS at the same time hard to take off. Yeah sure you'd ask why would I take it off in the first place. Well to clean your DS. Protect case accumulates dust and dust is bad for any electrical equipment so I always take the time out to clean my DS.
Silicon case doesn't do any protect from falls but you have a better grip on the DS. So probably it won't fall that often. It's easy to install in your DS. Bad thing about silicon case is that the dirt gets stuck on the outer shell of your DS. So it's a pain to get out. Sometimes it somewhat stains the outer shell and you'd see the mark where you silicon case was protecting.
Pssst. Go with the protection case. It's what I have for my DSi, and though it makes it as heavy and big as a Lite, I can slip pretty pictures under it for a "skin" effect. It's pretty beastly.
