You don't have to recharge as often and the screens are much brighter. On the downside, there have been a lot of people complaining about bad pixels, and broken hinges. (Don't flame me people, I'm only repeating what I've read HERE.)
The Phat can take a lot of punishment (dropping, etc) and still keeps working. It is heavier and needs to be recharged every 4-5 gameplay hours. The screens aren't as bright. But unless you are going to buy the Phat second hand, you won't be able to find one as I believe Nintendo is only making the lites now.
The broken hinges and bad pixels affected only a few units when the DS Lite was released on 2006. The reports about them may be over-blown. Fortunately, the units I purchased did not have these problems.
Other than the light weight, the DS Lite is also aesthetically attractive and resembles an Apple Macbook. The original DS resembles an aesthetic I disliked about PC laptops.
I sent in my first ds lite because the microphone didn't work well, and the second one I got had a bad pixel. But the third one I have seems to be OK.The broken hinges and bad pixels affected only a few units when the DS Lite was released on 2006. The reports about them may be over-blown.
