Okay, I'm not very educated on wireless networks, but I think what you just did by disabling your WEP was to disable your router's security. Basically, the "WEP" (whatever that actually is) is there to make sure only the owner of the router can use it for making wireless connections. That's where you WEP key comes in. Anyway, I'm not exactly sure what consequences disabling your security can have (except that your neighbors might be able to go online using your connection -- a crime), but I can pretty much guarantee you it's not something you want to do. Nintendowifi.com should have all the information you need to get your DS online safely.
As for friend codes, you have to get them on a friend-by-friend basis for each game, and how you enter them depends on the game. Your best bet for finding friend codes is to use the stickied thread in this forum (official friend code topic), or click on the link in my sig and I can hook you up and put you in the 100% Nintendo DS Union's Wi-Fi Hub. Whatever you do, don't post a thread asking for friend codes. Use the sticky instead.
