Do Graphics Really Matter?

I never take graphics over gameplay but saying they do not matter is nonsense....Maybe it's just my new HDTV hypnotizing me or something.Duckman5

yes it does matter. It's a form of art. the dev's put a lot work into the games to make sure it looks as crisp and pristine as possible. I can appreciate that. Some games have very life like settings and scenery that just blows me away especially since I have an HDTV. It makes you sit back and say "wow this is soo beautiful.

plus I have sensitive eyes and blotchy graphics etc.. usually hurt my eyes and give me headaches

Yes it matters. I like looking at a good game when I play.

At the very least, the game should have a good style and presentation, a la No More Heroes, rather than just looking plain ugly like some games.

graphics are important, but the overall game experience is much more sensitive to changes in gameplay than it is on graphics

Why not have both? You like Halo 3 and it's graphics. Don't you think it's nice that it has both good graphics and gameplay.

Sense good graphics doesn't mean bad gameplay there's no excuse not to have both.

Sense good graphics doesn't mean bad gameplay there's no excuse not to have both.

Graphics matter, they're the most important part of the game.

Video games are a visual medium.

Want to know how you can tell graphics are the most important part of games?

You can work around sound issues, you can work around control issues, you can work around glitches.

You can't work around being blind.

Can't see the screen? Can't play.

well... for me it depends.. A horror game need decent graphics, I`m no saying ps3 wonder... RE2 for PS is wonderfull still now at day for fan of the gerne, and SH is well... one of the best survival horror.... and the graphics are pretty average.... But it has to run well and go set a nice atmosphere, "look real" enough...

beside that, no for me they are not THAT imp. I would not say that they do not matter, but they are no "the essencial" of the game, as long as I have my gameplay, I love the game...

Then again, maybe is bc i`m one of those old-school gamers...

I do not even notice the different btw PS2, GC and sometimes even the Wii.. and I have no idea what is the dif bwt 360 and ps3.... they all look pretty sweet :P

The only thing that matters to me is how smoothly the game runs and whether or not the graphics accurately portray the tone of the game.famicommander

Couldn't have said it any better! Wii Sports graphics don't look like COD4's but they suit the game perfectly!

Graphics do matter but they don't have to look super realistic as long as they suit the game I won't have too mny complaints but developing on the Wii is no excuse for making a game with early PS2 graphics.

I own a Wii and a PS3 and I find myself wishing that the Wii could push 720p quite a bit. While I love game play a lot of Wii games look extremely washed out on my HDTV at 480p. Super Mario Galaxy is a good example of this, it's a great looking game but it could be so much better at 720p or above.CellAnimation

Yea I agree with you there. I play my Wii on an HDTV and Wii games tend to look not to great on those TVs considering its made for standard def. Being able to play in a higher resolution would help out TONS of Wii owners out there.

You need to research a bit more on how games are made so you'll understand why certain devs have reached certain graphical levels on the Wii.

O yea i know exactly why certain devs can. Cuz most devs are lazy and just port over crappy looking games form the ps2 and psp over and just put some dumb waggle motion instead of a button and there you go a wii game. Devs who actually take there time and build up a game from scratch on the wii turn out to look good. But most of those games are nintendo games. Most 3rd party games are ports and look like complete crap. Not all, but most. Thats just my opinion though.

Unlike other systems the Wii can't be built in pieces. It's built in layers and some of those layers take time. Nintendo has had the most time building these layers so they're always going to look best.

Depending on when a dev took up the Wii also decides how far they got making layers for games. In some cases studios like Namco Bandai have formed studios with Nintendo to try to speed up the process. Other devs started from scratch and they're trying to catch up.

Since Nintendo has the lead in making these layers no one is ever going to beat them, it's impossible unless Nintendo takes time off (which they wont do)

So no, no other dev will ever be able to surpass Nintendo when it comes to graphics unless they dedicate all their time to it and even then it will take years and they'll lose money in the process.

Bottom line? Mario Galaxy is not the standard for Wii games at all.

As someone stated earlier, yes graphics are the most important aspect of the game. Video games are a visual medium so we have to have graphics in order for us to see and play the game. BUT this topic should be clarified because most of us are referring to the "art style" or artistic direction of a game.

i dont realy care about graphics just as long as it decent. some types of graphics iam not too found of through, i dont like cellshadingEmperorZeruel

Cel-shading is an art style or the artistic direction the game took. The artistic style a game takes is important because it'll emphasize or detract from the experience (as others have mentioned), but the artistic style isn't more important than gameplay unless these two design elements are the same.
