I personally don't think it's absolutely necessary to buy MP2 story-wise, but I'd get it just because it's an awesome game in its own right.

nah, i never played the 2nd one and i bought the third one and it's awesome. you can handle the game without playing the second game. if you are a big metroid nut fan, then you should.

They dont make games that force you to have played a previous version to understand the storyline... it's just bad marketing. Besides, "shoot everything" is a pretty international language.

Yes you do. There is an exam at the beginning of the game, consisting of 45 multiple choice questions and 4 essay topics (2 of which you will choose), concerning the story of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. If you fail, the disc malfunctions, the Wii cuts it up into triangular shards, and it shoots them out at you, most likely killing or injuring any and everybody in the room. It happened to my cousin. It was a sad day for gaming...

You don't need the 2nd to play the 3rd.

You need to like video games to play the 3rd.

No, Not really but if you have yet to play it then i think it would be a good buy...but i think MP1 is much better then MP2, so if you are just after a good game play MP1.

IMO, 1 is the best game, story-wise, and game-play wise.

2 is equal story wise, but its hard as my... skull, and its really not that fun.

3 is great story wise, but its a bit easy, and doesnt really feel like the other 2 games. I bought it though, and its REALLY fun. Its the best control-wise.

MP2 isnt nearly the game MP1 is. the only thing you miss by not playing MP2 is Dark samus battles and that story. 2 of the dark samus battles in MP2 are really good.

If it wasn't for the fetch quest at the end of Prime 2, it'd be my favorite. It's got better boss battles than the first, and some cool enviornments and graphics. I'd recommend playing it, but it isn't that important.

I think you should play Echoes, of course is not absolutely necesary to undesrtand MP3 or enjoy it, but if you already play the first, then go for all of them. I'll like more Echoes than Prime, i think it got a little more action and is much harder than MP1 and the boss are awesome, but all are exceelnt games, so... get all of them and enjoy the best game on the Wii until now.

2's story was bad, just bad.

They bulit the 3rd so you can just jump in with a new story.

SO the simple answer, no you don't have to play 2 to get 3

Prime 2 was almost a side-quest of sorts in the scheme of the Prime series IMO, the only important thing that happened in Prime 2 that impacts Prime 3 actually happened AFTER Prime 2 already ended, as noted by some of the scanning you'll do in Prime 3. If you beat Prime 1 all of the way you'll already find out about Dark Samus.

Story-wise, no. There's a bit of lore near the end of MP3 that explains the entire plot of MP2 in a couple of paragraphs anyway.

But like others have said, it's a good game that you should play at some point.
