Don't know how many times it's been discussed, but, I've heard that Nintendo doesn't actually have this "shortage" of wii's and it's actually just used as a marketing plan to make people think they are selling out so fast that everyone in the world wants one!

So, do you believe this is true? I have been looking for one for a few months now, and ya know what, I wouldn't say that's too far-fetched, like most conspiracy theories out there.

(also, is it easier to find in Japan? That would make more sense since the importing would take longer and hell, stuff releases earlier there anyway for some reason, I mean, they've got Brawl already!)

Exactly how would Nintendo benefit by having some stockpile of Wiis that they were witholding from millions of people who want to buy one? Nintendo doesn't make any money by causing someone to want to buy a Wii, they only make money when someone can actually buy a Wii.

They did a study in England and found that 1/4 of the people there think Winston Churchill, Ghandi, and Cleopatra were fictional characters, yet 1/2 of the people there think King Arthur, Robin Hood, and Sherlock Holmes were real people.

They've just got a nice big stockpile and are releasing it little by little apparently.

Taking baby steps I suppose. Anyway, I know it's stupid to say but, it's been brought up so much that it's ridiculous.

btw, wtf was the point of the second half of the post? I did think it was funny and all, but, if you're pointing out that people are idiots, well..."news to me" - you should see that "Jaywalking" stuff on Jay Leno, makes you just sick, if not dumber. Also, I heard they did a study on kids in the 8th grade in the U.S. that couldn't point out Mexico and Canada on a map...

Don't you know that's all lies. Nintendo is lying about how many Wiis they're making and stores are lying about how many Wiis they've sold. In fact, Nintendo paid me $5 to pretend I have a Wii and that I really like it.

Conspiracies are ok as long as they could make sense. But in this case there wouldn't be much of a winner. There hasn't been anything pointing to a deliberate shortage except for there being a shortage. A shortage of such proportion that i doubt they are doing this deliberately. Probably they all tried to make it look like everyone wants their console, and that You have to try get it now or it won't be in stock, but in this case there just isn't any way to get one unless You are lucky.
Besides their production numbers seems to match decently with the sales numbers, and those numbers are quite big.

Nintendo's not playing around with the hype. The issue is there because of high demand, not because nintendo wants to ride the hype train as long as they can.

Well, I'm not an expert in this, but I think it could be a good market strategy. With all the hype with the Wii and the possible conspiracy, people start seeing the Wii as a great thing, maybe more than what it actually is. The shortage and hype act in the subconsciousness making the people want the Wii even more desperately. Like when you tell someone that he or she can't do something, that person will probably try to do it because of an irresistible feeling of curiosity. It's just a my theory, but I'm not so sure about it.

No. If that really is the situation then how come Nintendo Wiis really ARE out of stock everywhere. It's just that some *Won't mention word* keep buying all of them up and then selling them on Ebay for 3 times the real price.

I think the reason for the "shortage" of wii's is the fact that Nintendo sells almost 300 000 Wii's every week.

I manage the electronics department at a Target and with my experience of selling them I absolutely think this is true. It was pretty obvious to me even before I started hearing these rumors on the internet. I had some Wiis in today, only a dozen, but they sold within an hour. People would see them in the case and just buy them because they knew they were a hard thing to get. I can't tell you how many times people are talking to me while I am checking them out and they say "I don't know what it is really but I heard on the news that they are the hottest thing", and they are just buying them on the spot for the grandkids or something, no specific occasion.

That idea is nothing short of... well... retarded.

You know they're losing millions upon millions of dollars as a result of the shortages, right?

I don't know how anyone came upon the conclusion that intentionally keeping Wii's from the public would actually result in an increase in profits. If that's the case, then Nintendo needs to seriously consider a marketing overhaul.

justlp87

They're not "losing" money, it's potential sales. If you look at it in the long run they would make more money by peaking curiosity and then cranking out the systems instead of just cranking out the systems right away. I don't think it's "retarded" either, I think it's genius.

I picked I don't care only problem is that my dog chewed up the wire for my wireless G router So there goes just about 70% of the Wii's fun and just in time for brawl too :|

But yea anybody know if I would be able to find the power cable to my router...Ie: would they sell it at bestbuy or any stores like that seperately?

I'm really starting to believe its true, I mean the wii has been out for over a year and they knew about the shortages for almost a year now too...I doub't they could not step up production in this time...and to the person that thinks there selling 300,000 a week...

52 weeks in a year

300,000*52= 15,600,000

that makes no type of sense

but I really dont care I got my Wii

Yeah i think Nintendo deliberately is making the shortages. They state that they are pumping out as many Wiis as possible and that the Wii has been sold out ever since it was released.

If that was true, then how come the Wii only sold 400k during the summer months while they were able to pump out over 1 million Wiis during december alone? Shouldn't 1 million Wii have been pumped out during the summer also?

They planned it.

they produced only enough systems for the time period. since consoles are not the top of the list during the summer time, they wont need to produce 1.8 million consoles like during the end of the year.

Nintendo sold 14,29 millions Wii's last year. That is 274,807.69 every week.
