At the moment I do, but I've heard it can cause overheating. Is there really any reason to keep it on when your Wii is on standby?

Overheating only has to do with a heat sink not placed on the board correctly.

I keep mine off. The unit gets too hot when left in standby. Waisting Electricity and probably contributing to the early death of my Wii... So I turned it off. I think the only advantage is it will do it's firmware updates at night and update the News and Weather.

My Wii overheated and all I got for it was weather updates and crappy news. I would add though that it took about two months to get to that point where I could see artifacts or whatever they are.

So you think it is Wii Connect 24 that caused it to overheat?

Like JaysonGuy said, WiiConnect24 won't cause it to overheat. It uses less power than a standard light bulb and as long as it is in an area where it can vent out any hot air it will barely be warm.

WiiConnect24 will not cause the Wii to overheat, a defective Wii + WiiConnect24 will cause it to overheat. (But even if you have WiiConnect24 off on a defective it can still overheat from playing it.)
