I am thinking to buy pokemon on the gba sapphire/ruby and emerald, but I've been reading that the battery dies after 5 years and you have to change itso itcan save or the day/night system can work again. It's kind of expensive to buy those games new as they are rare. So do your old pokemon gba games still work?

My old gba games work fine, but my older pokemon red, blue, and gold versions all have a busted save file. I lost my shinies T_T

I still have red, yellow, silver, gold, and emerald. I just beat Yellow and the save worked just fine for me, BUT when I was early in the game, I took Yellow out of m GBA SP and put it in my GB Color to play it old-skool, and then when I put it back in the GBA SP, the save file was gone. But after that I just kept playing on the GBA SP and it saved perfectly, and I just beat the Elite 4 and stuff. So I have no idea what happened. And all my save files for my other Pokemon games are still working... I dunno maybe the battery life is determined by the number of times you save, and not the battery's age?

The battery does exist in the GBA games...but it's for time based events like vitimin sales. save files are as solid as the DS games

My Gen 3 games work fine, but Silver Versions save file is dead, unless I play the game in one playthrough - Without turning off the power, It wont save.

I think you're confusing R/S/E with Gold Silver and Crystal. The GBC versions stopped working since the Day/Night clock battery broke down, so they were left useless, which influenced the HG/SS.

R/S/E didn't have a Day or Night.

I have Gold and it still saves on my GBC. I'm pretty sure Ruby/Sapphire and Emerald got rid of the day and night feature. I was really upset about that too. It stays daylight all the time!

I don't know about my Gold, but I think its battery went out. My Silver's did. My Crystal is getting there (my favorite Pokemon game ever T_T). And my Ruby has a battery issue as well, but it's still playable.

My old copy of Blue is working just fine. I bought a copy of Silver not too long ago; the batteries were dead, but I managed to change it and now it can save properly.

Still got my yellow beside me right now and it's working fine.

Still have quite all my Sapphire, Leaf Green, Diamond, Soul Silver as well, but they aren't as old (obviously).

Unfortunately the Red I had was borrowed from a friend, and I don't have 2nd gen games (played through them multiple times, but don't actually own them).

I left my games before Gen III in their boxes since their remakes came out, and if a R/S/E remake came out I will box those too.

He has a point. The internal batteries do die after a period of time, but the game otherwise still works perfectly fine and saves well. I can't vouch for original gold and silver as mine was sent away to my cousins behind my back years ago.... Q.Q but my red, yellow, and ruby all work perfectly.
