The 4.0 update has been released. You can now run downloadable games off SD cards and blalalalalalalahahah

LOOK! Maybe SD cards aren't the way to go for data storage...Or are they? Are they? I dunno...Just post or vote, okay?

Do U still want a Hard Drive for the Nintendo Wii?

I don't see the point for it anymore. Opening up the SD card allows for a number of consumer friendly options for whoever needs the space. I got a 2 GB card for about $11, and thats more than enough space for my WiiWare and VC games. I also appreciate how the flash card is multifunctional, unlike prior memory cards or other proprietary Hard Drives, I can use it for photos, music, and video in a number of different devices.

However, I do wish Nintendo could do something about the ownership issue, given that its completely locked to the Wii its on. But since they've had as excellent of a hardware track record as they have, its not a pressing issue.

Solid state was the way to go.

All you say when you say you want a hard drive is that you want it to fail and lose your data.

What they have now would be fine if it wasn't stripped so much. But solid state is the right thing to choose.

I don't plan on d/l every channel, and I don't plan on buying every single VC game to date...so I'm content with what we have. I already have a few SD cards for my camera, so I'm good.

I got a 2 GB card for about $11

jmangafan

I bought two 8GB SDHC (Micro's) for $15 each.
One for my camera, one for my DSi. It works for your Wii too if you have an adapter.

I haven't really used the Virtual Console since launch and the first year, but I think a hardrive is not needed.

No, I never wanted one, I just wanted them to fix SD cards.

They did. It's cheaper and easier this way.

The SD card update is just fine, I never used a fraction of the harddrive space available when I had the 360 anyways:p

Just make it so that you can transfer save data on the SD cards and it'll be fine.

Seeing as we can now run channels off an SD card, I don't think a hard drive is necessary anymore.

Kinda but the update is just fine. All I want to be able to do now is copy ALL of my save files from the Wii to the SD card. I really hate having to start completely over in Smash Bros Brawl and other games just because I couldn't save the file.

I gave up on this a while ago. If they want the console to do this, this and that, it should have it from the beginning.

Why would I not want a Hard Drive? That is like someone coming up to you and saying: "here is some money". And you answer: "no".

Could you explain the logic behind that comparison. A new harddrive costs more money than a new SD card. So, you'd be spending more on a harddrive. Sounds more like someone coming up to you and you and telling him "here is some money". Please explain your reasoning, as it doesnt make a lick of sense to me.

This post begs the question... WHY?kardine

Because I didn't have a storage problem. I don't buy a whole lot of VC games and now that I have the SD storage for my Rock Band DLC, I'm happy with what I have.

Of course, I'm not saying I wouldn't buy one if a HD was introduced for the wii but I don't feel I need it.

This is just a bad comparison, if you're implying that the Wii is completely harddrive-less, and we would have gotten one for free at launch, akin to the 360 or Playstation, then you're wrong, as the Wii already had internal memory. As it stands the option to get a reasonably sized SD card is a much cheaper and user friendly alternative than the costs of Microsoft's proprietary hard-drive, and a much easier to deal with tool compared to Sony's HD history. We're not dealing with free money here, we're dealing with a smart solution to a real problem.

A hard drive for the Wii would be pointless. Considering the size of Wiiware and VC games, save files, and downloadable content you'd be hard pressed to fill a bigger SD card. Having 100GB or more (which is a very small HDD these days) is overkill. I think all they really need to do is to allow saved games to be pulled from the SD card, and fix the issue where you can't move certain game's save games onto an SD card.

Bad analogy. It's more like: "Hey, if you give me a bunch of money you can have this storage shack for your home. It fits right in your back yard! You'll have to run electricity to it, of course, and dragging stuff back and forth to it isn't as quick as using the closet, but hey! Look at all that space! ... Oh yeah, I should warn you this thing 'might' collapse after a couple of years. But look at all that space!"

Nope, I found the solution with the SD card just right. But there will be an update that you can put save games on the card. Why would there be a tab "SD" in your options menu, when checking the memory?

SSD harddrives are pretty expensive nowadays the wii would cost significantly more with such harddrive.

Did you know the SSD drives can be overwritten only a limited amount of times and loses capacity during time ?

if we could play directly off of the card it would be fine. The only issue with the current scenario is the cap on game sizes. The ability to plug in a USB HD and play games off of it would be great. loading times are so 90's pop the disc in for copy write and play it off of the HD fwiw.

Because you can manually Copy or Move saved games to your SD card. Although, not all games allow this, like Super Smash Bros. Brawl for example.

ideally they would have patched it so that u could use SD cards or USB storage devices (like an external HDD or memory stick). but they didnt. still they did add support for higher capacity cards which was nice. one of those should sort anyone out (i only have a 512MB card from my camera and its got quite a few block on it even after i downloaded everything i bought...so im happy). i wouldnt be interested in an official HDD from ninty mind..it would be a rip off and no different from a normal HDD. that would be a waste. may as well take a leaf from sonys book and use standard equipment where possible.

Why limit yourself to an SD card as a form of memory backup when you can get yourself a 120GB hard drive? Dont get me wrong, the SD card is still a good way to store some things here and there.

Why are there so many votes for "hard drive please." We never needed a hard drive in the first place! even before the 32 GB SD cards were introduced

What in the hell would you need 120GB on the Wii for? Seriously? That's beyond overkill.

there is not really a lot on wii that you would need a hdd for. on 360 yes you need one because everything is high def there are demos, full games, videos etc. etc. etc. to download. but on wii its just a few vc games and thats it. sd cards are more than enough.

why would you expand and make your console bulkier and more expensive if the returns arent worth it?a couple of decent sds give up to 30gbs enough for all your wii lifetime needs and then some...Now if you say you want to download music and internet stuff and save them ON your wii..man...thats why you have a pc in the first place.

No. Not only is 32 gigs much, much, MUCH more than enough space for the Wii, but both SD cards and Pendrives are more reliable than hard drives.
