Maybe they SHOULD. But they don't. Microsoft must have been desperate to pay the amount of money they did for Rare though.

They should because Rare made some great games on Nintendo consoles. They kicked core gamers in the balls when they did that, but being a business I imagine they view the almighty dollar a little higher than their fans.

reads comment *shakes head in disgust* anyway yeah it sucks that they lose the Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark series however I would think that Rare should regret the split more than Nintendo because one Rare's best work came from emulating Nintendo's work and two now they are just Microsoft's resident crash test dummies. They use to be one of the premiere development houses in the industry, how they have fallen from grace.

considering that Rare never gets anything done on schedule and their track record since being sold (seriously the only decent thing they have come out with is Viva Piniata) I would say no. I do remember being ticked about it at the time because I would no longer get to play Perfect Dark Zero but heck that didn't even end up coming out that gen much less be good when it finallyhappened.

Is that how it worked? I thought Microsoft made an offer for Rare, and Rare accepted and left Nintendo. Maybe the question is "Should Rare regret leaving Nintendo?", because that answer is an easy yes.

microsoft offered nintendo some money (one hell lot of money that probably saved nintendo's life until the wii came out) and nintendo accepted. rare itself didnt have it's opinion considered. not that they're nintendo fans... if they'll get better salaries, it's obvious that they'd move (not sure on that salary part, but i'm just saying rare wouldnt stay "for their love for nintendo")

No not in the slightest, like others have said rare had peaked with the 64 and it probably wouldn't have gone much further than that. The only thing i guess they would regret is not being able to put their games on the Virtual Console.

Nintendo was never in trouble when it comes money. All their consoles made profit, and they had the all might Gameboy (and eventual DS) brand to live on even if they didn't turn profits on the consoles.

As much as I would like Rare to be a Nintendo developer again, the reason why Nintendo let them go is probably a good reason.

like the fact that Microsoft owned 51% of Rare's stock? Just did a quick wikipedia search The people who started Rare, the Stamper Brothers, owned 51% of their stock and Nintendo owned 49% and the Stamper Brothers sold their stock to Microsoft and then Nintendo sold their 49% to M$. All in all M$ paid $375 million total.

Most of the talented developers of Rare had since moved on so no the big N got the best deal by selling them.

No, Rare isn't the same as it used to be. Even though I loved Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, its pretty clear they aren't as good as they were when they were under Nintendo.

Yes because it made the best Donkey Kong agmes, most notable the donkey kong country tilogy and donkey kong 64 and we have never had a good donkey kong game since except for junglebeat that was good but nothing to the rare games made.

dude do you realize rare died? Nintendo got rid of a corpse and now MS has it.They made 3 almost noticeable games in this generation...just so you know, most of Rare founders and members are not in rare anymore. And they were the ones who made the good games. Nintendo must be glad they got rid of them in the right time.

Well lets take a look at what we have

Nintendo era

Goldeneye

Banjo Kazooie

Banjo Tooie

DK64

Perfect Dark

Jet ForceGemini

Blast Corps

DKC (trilogy)

Killer Instinct

Killer Instinct 2 (Gold)

Star Fox Adventures

Diddy Kong Racing

Conker's Bad Fur Day

Microsoft Era

Grabbed by the Goulies

Conker (whatever it was called)

Perfect Dark Zero

Banjo Kazooie (n&b)

Kameo: Elements of Power

Viva Pinata

They're not the same Rare as they used to be, and the quality of their games shows. If anything, Nintendo should be happy they sold them. They got their monies worth while they had them, and when they sold them.

Absolutely they should. The kind of games that Rare makes works best on Nintendo consoles. Look at Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. It's a fantastic game, and it got great reviews, but it sold like crap on the 360. However, that's exactly the kind of game that sells well on Nintendo's consoles.

Considering most of the original team left rare after Microsoft bought them, I think that would probably explain their latest games....

Nintendo owns everything Rare ever did DK related and they do whatever they feel like with any of it, remember Diddy in Brawl? That should be your indication. And for those saying that Rare peaked with Nintendo and good riddance and all that jazz, you do realize that like all other Nintendo 2nd party teams they had Nintendo's input and since they were on a Nintendo platform they could emulate Nintendo's games and get away with it. Its not that they peaked so to say its just that they are missing a large part of the creative juices that they will not find working under Microsoft because what the hell does MS know about making games? It shouldn't be too tough to understand that losing something like Nintendo EAD supporting you is a pretty big hit. Its not so much that Rare cant do it anymore, its just that they cant do it with Microsoft. I think even with Sony they would be a higher level than they are now.

This is a pretty one sided post, I take it that a lot of you are pro nintendo. I was not a fan of Viva Pinata myself, but Banjo Kazooie N & B is pretty fun IMO. These posts sound more like anger towards the loss of RARE that an actual conversation about Nintendo's well-being since then. Personally, if Donkey Kong is any indicator Nintendo should be crying themselves to sleep over it.

Who knows. Rare always made a lot of the top games that helped sell the N64. They made Goldenye, Perfect Dark, the 2 Banjo's Conquer, Blast Corps, Jet Force Gemeni, Killer Instict 2, Donkey Kong 64, Diddy Kong Racing. Rare also helped Nintendo regain a foothold against Sega in the 16 bit era. They made Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct 1 which helped push sales. Whether or not Rare is good today, Nintendo cannot deny that if it wasn't for Rare back in those days, they wouldn't have been quite as successful. They owe a lot to the company.

well, from what i know, from the N64 to the gamecube, fans were basically what kept nintendo alive. sure, they made money to keep themselves alive, but i guess since they didnt see much coming from rare (starfox adventures sucks, face it... not directly talking to you :P), they saw another way to get money. they lost alot of money during the N64/GC gens. and looking at rare offered to MS, they didnt lose that much.

It was only under the supervision of Nintendo that Rare made good games. Without them, Rare hasn't produced anything special (with the exception of Viva Pinata). Sheesh, they can't even make a Banjo Kazooie game without destroying the entire platforming formula and replacing it with vehichle creation.

Nintendo sold their share in Rare after many key developers had left that company to form Free Radical, which would also explain the decline in the quality of the games released since.

This isn't a pron-Nintendo post. It's people stating the facts. Nut&Bolts is a quality game but doesn't stack up the the critical and comercial sucess of games like Donkey Kong Country Series, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, Killer Instinct (a bit of a stretch actually). Nut&Bolts didn't make an impact like any of these titles.

dude, do you realize the talent is gone?this is not anger, this is logic. If you liked the work of A person that made a great game, why the hell would you care about the leftovers?think logically. You say, if DK..blah blah blah.OK listen up, the DK people is not in rare anymore, they all quit. They all went on their own ventures separately and thats why nintendo let them go, understand? If they kept Rare they wouldnt have done anything BECAUSE THEY WERENT AT RARE. Besides the remmands of rare had done very few and not succesful games, nothing compared to the original crew.
