Retro Studios i believe is very talented. Right now they are the best first party Nintendo has IMO. They also have shown to work hard, and take time to make quality games. I think they have the ablility to fill in Rares shoes with time. That being said, to be sure we have to wait for their new project to come to light, and see their work outside of first person games. Do you think they can Replace Rare?

I picked the third option. Its not that Retro is not amazing, its just that they have released only three games in the last what, seven years? Rare pumped out quite a few AAA games on the venerable N64, and they were not all the same series. I am curious to see how Retro will do with a different IP.

Rare is nothing longer.

Ironic, I found a petition for Rare to come back to Nintendo:

http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/haverarecomebacktoni#signpetition

I signed it.

ill start by saying i think both retro and rare are excellent developers. that said, i dont see any further connection. rare made a variety of excellent titles from the cartoony banjo kazooie platforming series to the more serious fps perfect dark. retro just hasnt released the amount of games required to match that versatility. of course, i am looking forward more to retro's next project than i am to rare's...

Not until they make a couple of their own IPs, just like Rare had Banjo. I wonder what a Retro platformer would be like? Donkey Kong revival maybe?

Rare made some brilliant games for Nintendo in the past. It is possible that Retro could match them but it hasn't happened yet. Basically, the fourth choice.

I think so. They completely revamped Metroid (Similar to what Rare did with DK), except Metroid Prime became one of the highest rated games EVER.

If the new game they are working on there does anything similar, I can finally push Rare out of my heart:P

I agree with everything except Pushing Rareware out of my heart part. (Meaning I know that last part is your opinion but I don't think Rareware will leave my heart Rare maybe but Rareware never. Retro will just go right next to Rareware in my Heart.)

Also TC I still think Intelligent Systems is Nintendo's best First Party (Well Best external First Party they make games in every genre almost and they have yet to make a bad game.)

Well you could make games a little faster back in the SNES, and N64 days. Nothing Rare ever did was as ambitious as Metroid Prime, quantity does not dictate ability. If thats the case Ubi and thier constant shovelware would be the greatest developer in history. Rare basically followed Nintendo's patterns with the bulk of thier titles, while Retro re-invented the Metroid franchise, they were both great with Nintendo. However I think Retro could do better without Nintendo then Rare has been able to do.

^This.

One reason I've been such a big Nintendo fan for so long is because when you pick up a Nintendo game, you know its going to work. It's not going to be buggy, and most of the time its going to be a really good game for what it's aiming for. They have ALWAYSbeen committed to quality, even if it takes longer to do so.

Sooo many developers these days just want to get a game out as fast as they can, and it has really cut down on what could have been potentially great games.

Retro seems to have that same dedication to making the finished product work. I could easily see them surviving on their own.

I miss Rare though:(

They are two companies that took Nintendo characters and ran them into the ground while making a name for themselves in the mainstream

Rare did it with Donkey Kong taking a fan base of over 9 million when they started and only leaving 3 and a half when they were done on the SNES

Retro did it by making a game that Nintendo disliked so much they sent babysitters to watch over the creation of 3 so they wouldn't go down the same path again

It's a moot point anyhow. Rare is long gone and Retro has left to build games elsewhere.

I'm not a fan of either company because they didn't do justice to the franchises they were in charge of. Those franchises deserved better

I agree sales wise. Neither company could sell their games nearly as well as Nintendo, but then again what company can actually make the sales equal to that of Nintendo when borrowing their characters? I can't think of anyone.

Quality of the titles however, both of them create some of the greatest games for at least the generation that they were around. Goldeneye is still completely mind blowing to me, and Metroid Prime is my favorite game on the Gamecube.

first, nintendo is the only "nintendo first party". first party means made by the house. retro's a second party, a company owned by nintendo that makes games only for nintendo. and third parties are independent companies, such as capcom, namco, square enix, etc. and... i didnt care that much about rare back then, and i dont care right now. i want god games to be made. but considering you're probably calling rare "the most awesome 2nd pary nintendo ever had", i'd say... nah. all i remember to see from retro is the prime trilogy.

Well I appreciate the topic, and I have definitely enjoyed everything Rare did before they were bought by Microsoft (Killer Instinct, Star Fox Adventures, Goldeneye, etc...), but since they have yet to not only make a good game...but barely any games. Retro...is flawless. A marvelous masterwork of gamedevelopment that is echelons above what Rare has done since they stopped working woth Nintendo to develop games. Therefore, this topic is invalid to me at least.

Not yet. Rare worked with a lot of Nintendo characters but they also had tons of series of their own, series that rivaled the quality of many first-party titles and even topped those most of the times. Retro on the other hand has only worked on Metroid games so far.

well now you know that it's not like that. Nintendo EAD (the studio myiamoto spends the most time on, the one responsible for the mario/zelda games) is first party retro and camelot are second party capcom and konami are third party. but that's going off-topic, lets leave the discussion to "is retro as important to nintendo as rare was, and is it as good as them?"

I don't think i've ever seen Jayson say something that didn't draw attention to it

Anyway, on topic

retro took metroid into a new gen and made great games (three great games,2 AAA and 1 AA) Rare did the same with DK except they made 4-8 great games over nearly 10 years

If Wiki is true then they lost 3 people. It doesn't seem like a big loss. Not as big of a loss as Rare took when it lost the Stamper bros.

3 people does not make a developer, thier departure makes pretty much no difference at all. If those three people accounted for everything the developer does, why pay the dozens of other people that work there. In the grand scheme of things three people no matter thier position is not a big deal.

How was the Metroid franchise driven into the ground again? Wouldn't you think that if a certain "bad" game was that "bad" then it would not be included in a compilation disk?

The third person would still be at Retro if he didn't die. He was the lead programmer and incharge of the Camera in the cutscenes. He even made a book that I want called Real-Time Camera's look it up on Amazon.com the other two people left Retro to start their own company and it is now owned by EA.

ya they can definatly be the new rare, metroid primes and DKCR were just amazing. i would like to see mroe games from them though.

i also think its funny how rare is proud of making kinect sports and no other quality games, i read it in an article the other day.
