It's hard to tell with a Tales game. A number of them did not come out so well. Look at TofS 2 and number of issues Gamespot reviewer had with it.

ya i agree with this statement. Tales is one of those game series that you never know what you'll get. I played my first when i played ToS on the GC and it is my favorite RPG. hell, if i even get past half way of the rpg, you know it has to be good in some aspect.
but then i played tales of legendia. i got pretty far and stopped (not too hard on such an easy game) and it wasnt a very good game. I played abyss, which was an evolution of the gameplay style, but the story i did not like. Being so story heavy, Rpg's are really a hit or miss with me in gameplay and story. Its gotta appeal to me in two ways that some other games wont need to.
i like to bring up the digimon video games (for consoles :D) when talking about series that couldnt grasp an identity. though tales games all follow the basic gameplay formula, im still gonna use this example
the digimon games were all good on concept, but each iteration, they would change things up to TOTALLY different genres and created whole new storylines that didnt folllow the show, books or each other. If the developers had stuck with perhaps one of the stories or gameplay styles and refined it, it could have been a good game. Now, if we apply that to tales, it will be really a hit or miss because of the story. you know the gameplay isnt gonna be too much different, but unlike call of duty or halo, where you know what you're getting, the story could really throw us off on predicting whether we'll like it or not.
EDIT: also, the change in developing groups throws off what to expect as well. from what i understand, tales of symphonia dawn of the new world was created by the less experienced team and well, playing the game, you could totally tell it was a low budget spinoff.
