It NEEDS to be lowered, to compete with the Vita, a system significantly more powerful for the same price. A drop to the $200-$150 range would make it a very serious stick in Sony's wheels.Harkat95
I know it would increase and boost the sales of the 3DS, but this time I guess Nintendo got too cocky.
to compete with the upcoming VITA Nintendo WILL have to be prepared to lower the price of the 3DS.
I would say Nintendo should look at dropping the system down to $220 in the US.
The 3DS will get a price drop around christmas I'm guessing and all it will look more attractive then :P
It's Nintendo guys ! They rulez :P
The console was planned to launch at £230 in the UK.
It dropped at launch to £200. then £180 and it's selling for £160.
EU law means Nintendo can't set the price of the 3DS the retailers do and a price war has really cut the price down. £160 = $260 so it's almost as cheap here as it is in America.

Except when the Vita is released, it won't be competing with the 3DS, it will be competing with the 3DS and a library of great games. The real question is should the price of the Vita be lowered to compete with the 3DS. 8)
If all goes as planned and Mario Kart, Super Mario 3D, Kid Icarus Uprising and Star Fox 64 3D are released this year, Nintendo doesn't need to reduce the price. By having those titles, among others, in the line up - Nintendo is already raising the "value" to the buyer.
I don't think it needs to be lowered to compete with the Vita. Sony doesn't seem to be marketing the Vita any differently from the PSP. I think it's going to be the DS vs. PSP battle all over again. Let's not forget when the PSP was released it was way better than the DS hardware-wise.

This. Seriously, I'm tired of all these price lowering threads. Nintendo launched the thing 3 months ago. Sales will pick up once we get over this worst launch in handheld history. Software sells hardware, and Nintendo knows this. I can see maybe a new color and something like a Pilotwings bundle for $250, but Nintendo won't drop the price just as a counter to Vita. The internet is going to explode when the 3DS outsells the Vita this fall and for early next year at the same price point. The 3DS has the best third/first party line up among all next gen handhelds. Software will sell the system
My guess is no price drop until 2012.
Also, I'd like to add (It warrant a whole second straight post lol) that when Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire remakes, or Pokemon Grey are announced for the 3DS for Spring 2012 (I'm guessing an announcement later this year) or in Summer 2012, the 3DS will fly off shelves @ $250
I honestly really feel like I got $250 and more so out of my purchase. I think its a good price for a good product.
Well considering I refuse to buy the over priced thing until it drops to at least $199, yeah I think it should drop it's price. No way in hell am I will to spend $250 for a 3DS when I can spend $250 and get the Vita which is way more powerful and does a lot more. If Nintendo wants my money this time around, they have no choice but to drop the price.

Indeed. If I had decided to wait on the 3DS, I still would have been nearly required to get one once a main entry in the Pokemon series comes out.
The thing that made the DS outsell the PSP so dramatically was the reduced price. [QUOTE="bls_essex"]I think it's going to be the DS vs. PSP battle all over again. Harkat95It will be, IF Ninty drop the price and release sufficient amounts of software before too late.
The thing that sold the DS over the PSP was its superior game library and the fact that it had an identity and wasn't a "me too" wanna be of a home console.
The DS actually distiguished itself from its competition.

While I agree that the DS made wise moves design-wise, it was the reduced price that propelled it to where it was.It should remain at 250.00. Nintendo says that it is worth 250.00 & if gamers want it they should pay the 250.00 to play it. No price drop is needed. If one can not afford the 250.00 for the 3DS then maybe thats a personal issue. You have to pay to play.Just as the topic said.

You are right, they do rule & should rule at the 250.00 price tag. 250.00 for the 3DS is a great deal and Nintendo should not lower the value of their products. The 3DS will get a price drop around christmas I'm guessing and all it will look more attractive then :P

True! Nintendo rules!
Nope.. i feel that $250 is a great price point for it.. the Vita may look better, but Nintendo has its core franchises, and thats what sells consoles, not graphics alone.. (which after playing RE Mercs and DOA, the 3DS can actually have some great looking games, lazy devs are the only ones to blame.)PoisoN_Facecam0
Reading a lot of these makes me start to think the price is okay for it and I personally agree with you, aesthetics, graphics or design doesnt matter. To be honest I think its based on what YOU prefer.

If they drop the price it shows that they feel their product is inferior to the market. Nintendo should not disrespect the current owners and keep the price at 250.00.I dont think it should really. People want a price drop because of Vita but the reality is that sony has already dropped the price of the Vita to compete with the 3DS which shows how scared they are imo. They will def be taking a sizable hit on each unit sold and nintendo shouldn't follow sony down that rabbit hole. Not at least without seeing how the vita performs when it comes out.
Right now they should just focus on the games and improving the system with updates.
Reggie specifically said that the 3DS' price won't be going anywhere to compete with the Vita. I think the 3DS will win in the long run because of the titles, but I could see the price of the 3DS being lowered to $200 in about a year or so... Probably next christmas. I can definitely see the price lower when they bring out another model.
But personally, I wish the price point was $200 bucks right now... I mean I just spent $300 dollars on a PS3 not too long ago. I'm going to get the system sooner or later, but I'm scared to invest my money on it right now just in case it flops. If I do get it, I'd be playing Pokemon instead of any of the 3DS titles tbh...

You cant compare it to what you payed for a PS3 thats a 6 year old console that was originally twice that amount. I think the 3DS has a bright future regardless of happens with the vita really.

Why does it matter how old the PS3 is right now when looking at the context of what I actually meant? I'm not even comparing the prices. I mean regardless, money is money and it takes money to buy these things. My point is that from a personal perspective, I just spent $300 dollars on a PS3 not including games and accessories, so I'm not inclined to buy a handheld system right now that costs $250. I'm not made of money. I wasn't making a comparison in prices in the way you thought I was. I'm talking about a personal experience of why I wouldn't. Just too much money to be spending on that type of stuff for me.

That's like comparing a Desktop PC with a Laptop PC.To be honest i thought 250 was pretty cheap to begin with, the console is a good piece of hardware, i don't even think it's gonna drop with all the great titles coming to the 3ds. gonna buy the vita day one with 3g but i'm sure i'll always like my 3ds more!

I do, but knowing Nintendo it won't be for awhile unless they feel threatened by Vita since they're going to be the same price if I recall correctly (at least the wifi model of Vita will).
I have one but i think it should cost somewhere from $180 to $200. Not more than that.soulreaper-4I agree with you. I think $180 is the sweet spot. SONY is playing it smart this time with matching Nintendo on their price. This portable war will be different than the last. I think I would of bought a Vita instead of a 3DS if I had known the pricing sooner. I think your getting more value with the Vita, at least it's a multimedia device. That's what I liked about the PSP-3000. I don't know what Nintendo was thinking when they picked 249.
not yet. Nintendo will keep the price the same for a while. They might lower it when the vita comes out but I still doubt it. they will probably wait and see how the 2 sell against each other. 3ds has a crapload of AA games coming out this year and I think the games will be enough to sell the system itself
guess I havent been paying too much attention to release dates, ive been looking at ign
http://ds.ign.com/index/upcoming.html
which says:
starfox sept 11th
mgs snake eater dec 31st
mario kart dec 30th
resident evil revelations dec 31st
super mario dec 30th
kid icarus dec 31st
cave story nov 8th
and some other ones.....the site could be wrong I dont pay enough attention...but its what I thought
Obviously the only thing you care about is how powerful the hardware is and how many polygons it can push, when in fact your selection should be based on the games alone. The 3DS is already looking to have a great future of games while the Vita has yet to show much at all. You sound like a Cow who only cares about graphics, and i highly doubt you would buy a 3DS despite what you say.Well considering I refuse to buy the over priced thing until it drops to at least $199, yeah I think it should drop it's price. ok first of all , gamers iwll have no choice to drop 250 this gen but what will they drop it on , a handheld that just came out with only few games or one with a built up library and is expected to get more judging by past nintendo handhelds lol
i know people wont be stupid ,, if they are then its on them ,
just droping 250 on vita cAUSE ITS MORE POWErful thats not a reason to buy over the other what if vita has p s3 ports ya i see no reason in buying a vita then
Even though it would be nice to lower the price, I don't think Nintendo wants to be seen as the bargain hunter's choice. They want to compete toe-to-toe, and they want their perceived value to stay high. They would probably rather add value to the package than lower its price. At least that's what I'm thinking their approach is. Lowering the price would be nice, though.
