Do you think the DS will have much life left once the 3DS hits??

I've seen several posts from people angry with nintendo for releasing a new handheld so close to the release to the DSi XL. Well, besides regretting not getting the hot new tech do you think that those people will also have to deal with an evaporating list of new games? Will nintendo continue to produce DSes? Is this the end for the DS?

Well Nintendo released the Game Boy Micro when the original GameBoy/GameBoy Color was imminently getting replaced with the GBA, right? So I'd say it's not unprecedented for Nintendo to bring out novelty versions of old hardware that might seemingly undercut new hardware on the horizon.

I guess not. Nintendo will probably do what Sony did when they released the PS3. They will still produce Nintendo DS games as well as third party companies. Of course the 3DS will be the new focus, but I say the DS still has a couple of years to it. I will certainly keep my DS Lite for some time and I'll buy a 3DS when it will have become the main handheld in Nintendo's lineup, which is at least a year and a half in the future.

Also, depending on how much the 3DS will be, many people might go with the DS instead. I can't imagine the 3DS being the same price or cheaper than the DS.

Speaking of price, how much do you guys think the 3DS will retail for? $200? more? that could make a huge difference in how quickly the new system takes off.

to me it will probably amount to a dev battle between

DS: massive userbase for instant $$$$ (plus 3DS owners can play DS games).

3DS: MUCH more desirable tools for devs. They have cameras, gyroscopic sensors, analog control, upgraded hardware, 3D effects for wow factor. An exciting platform to develop for.

imo there will be a period of a few years of overlap but nintendo and devs will be eager to have 3ds take over

$200. But.... demand will be extremely high so nintendo could justify selling it for a lot more. If you want a 3DS you better pre order imo

The japanese release date for the 3DS hasnt even been released. The DS still has many new titles coming out and it still has a lot of life left. However, it's end is inevitable from the beginning and we should all be prepared for it and ready to move onto the 3DS when it's time or when you're ready.

The GameBoy Micro was a GBA. And yes, they released it pretty late, well after the GBA SP, around when the DS was coming out.

DS games will still be coming out for a little while into the 3DS's lifetime. I don't think you will see DS games trickling out a few years from now like you would have with the PSX when the PS2 was well into its life, but I think for maybe a year or so yet you will see some notable DS games being made, maybe even the next 2 years.

I know that Pokemon Emerald was released pretty late in the GBA's life, when the DS was out I think actually, so it's possible that the last DS game will be the third version of Pokemon Black & White.

Not sure I understand your logic. How did my buying an XL result in me "not getting the new tech"? Am I not eligible to buy a 3DS now? I didn't realize that...

What you fail to have grasped is that, as great as the 3DS will be, it lacks one core ingredient that will ensure that the XL is still superior to it in one way: The 3DS screens will be tiny compared to the XL. So yeah, I'm still pretty happy to be an XL owner, because it's still the only way to play a handheld game on a decent sized screen. Plus, as I've posted elsewhere, thanks to those large screens, it makes a great e-book reader when used with the BOOKWORM website.

Also, do a Google search on "NINTENDO DS 2011 RELEASES" and you'll see that at least for another year, DS games will be made. Plus, many of us buy our games a year or two after their original release. So while you apparently would love for us to find the XL becoming obsolete......not gonna happen for a few years.

By the way I think the XL specifically will hold on longer than the Lite or regular DSi....precisely because of what i said: the larger screen which is a better experience for a whole lot of people.

Isn't the 3DS allegedly being released before Pokemon Black and White??

If so, the DS will still have plenty of life.

It'll probably enjoy the same post-successor life that the PS2 did.

It would be naive to believe that the support for the DS will stay the same after the release of 3DS, but I'm not sure that it will disappear completely.
After all, producing a game for DS compared to a game for 3DS should be less expensive and "difficult" (assuming that you fully use both systems potential).
Therefore I believe that some games where the developers deem it unnecessary to use the added features or graphical capabilities of the 3DS over the DS will still be developed for the DS. Given that the 3DS can play DS games the developers wouldn't lose any potential buyers in that way either.

However, I don't think that Nintendo will release any big titles for DS after the launch of 3DS.

The 3DS screens have higher resolution than the DSi XL, and personally I'll take resolution over size any day.

That's you.....not everyone. Certainly not me. I'm pretty sure I'd pass on a postage-stamp game screen even if it's the equivalent of the quality of a 1280 by 800 computer monitor.

The DS still has life to it, I mean Pokemon HeartGold and Soulsilver just came out back at the beginning of March, so if you think the DS is officially dead and people are no longer playing that game... And there are still a handful of interesting new games being made for the system. A new Mario VS. Donkey Kong, new Pokemon Ranger, new Professor Layton, Dragon Quest 9, Dragon Quest 7, a new Final Fantasy, Super Scribblenauts, Rock Band 3, Okamiden, Golden Sun DS, Pokemon Black, Pokemon White...etc. So, no, the DS is not dying yet.
